> it's 2 AM on a Saturday morning by my clock

This is a thread created for the discussion of Quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QM's. Posters looking for advice on tabletop games should look elsewhere.

Useful links: http://pastebin.com/x6BqaJ7r
This link contains numerous writing guides, general advice, and various quest tools and communities.

https://twitter.com/Eisenstern/lists/quest-runner-directory
This is a directory containing the tweets of most current QM's. While a twitter is by no means mandatory, it is a useful tool for both you and your players. If you are a QM, simply post your Twitter here to have it added to the directory. Spamming your quest twitter with non-quest related tweets may result in its removal from the directory.

IRC Channels:
[The Cabal] #QMC @ Rizon.net (slightly related to quests; enjoys worldbuilding, mechanics and politics)
[Hugbox] #ques/tg/enerals @ Rizon.net (barely related to quests; enjoys Larro quests and anime)

> QM topic
Are you constantly working on improving your writing ability? What is the latest book you've read or non-quest thing you've written?

> player topic
How do you show your appreciation to your favourite QM? A hearty thanks for running or something more?
>>
>>44107922
>Player Question

Mainly just a thanks, as I cannot draw for shit.
>>
>>44107960
Have you ever considered commissioning art?
>>
>>44107922
>Player Question
I try to encourage discussions between anons in thread, ask questions after, and yeah usually a thanks for running when it ends.
>>
>>44107922

I thank my QM whenever. I want to draw something, but the artwork used is already better than my meager scribblings.
>>
>>44108010
Don't have much money to spend.
>>
Do you think players are too focused on diplomacy and getting the best possible outcome out of a decision?
>>
>>44108092
Yes.
>>
>>44107922
>How do you show your appreciation to your favourite QM?
I write self-insert porn of me raping the MC while his/her waifus are forced to watch
>>
>>44108092

Yes, I think that all the time. See, a Quest is only exciting when there isn't a clear best option for everything. When every outcome leads to more drama. I think it's especially important not to give players an incentive to train, turtle up, or otherwise do very downtime-intensive things, because you want them to be constantly dancing on the razor's edge as they reel from one crisis to the next.

It's like with diplomacy. Conversation should be a gambit, too. You can't reliably inspire someone; Fuck up, and you're worse off than if you didn't talk to him/her. Expending effort doesn't naturally mean you'll succeed.
>>
>>44108092
A lot of times yes, though I've seen good players play their characters well and use intimidation or force before trying diplomacy cause that's how the character is.
>>
Halp /wqdt/, I think I'm in love with /tg/'s collective unconscious.

A QMC is rapidly becoming my husbando.
>>
>>44108187
Is it JJ? That butt mang.
>>
>>44108060
Speaking as a QM, I'd say that if you want to draw something, you should go ahead. I love it when people make stuff related to my quest, regardless of quality. It's the thought that someone liked your work enough to make something for it that matters, could be hastily-made macaroni art and most QMs will still love it.

Hell, come to think of it, I'd find it funny as hell if my players actually made macaroni art related to my quest.
>>
>>44108187
Which one?
>>
The planets are aligning to grant me hours of free time multiple nights a week, so I've been strongly considering buckling down and making a serious attempt at another quest. I'm very interested in the rules systems that people are using for modern quests. What do you guys think are effective rules for a collaborative game like this? In the past I've gone extremely rules-light, calling for rolls occasionally and going off a general "high roll good low roll bad" system. Is that what people prefer? It allows for the most effort to be dedicated towards the plot of the quest, and I'm worried that introducing too many rules systems will cause everything to become bogged down by people trying to optimize whatever system they're presented with.
I've been considering doing something MtG-themed that utilizes a "hand" of card "spells" that the players/MC have access to. Have there been successful MtG quests in the past that I could refer to?

>>
>>44107922

I want to write terrible fanfiction about Joker Quest, but I can feel the cancer overwhelming me whenever I think about it.
>>
>>44108230
I know that feel senpai
I know exactly how it feels, especially before sleeping
>>
>>44108223
BQ is some great memories, but I honestly don't think I could capture that lightning twice and I'm afraid I would tarnish what we already accomplished if I tried. It's possible that I could do something set in the same universe, or set in AlchemyQuest's universe, but it's been years at this point and it might be better to just start fresh.
I actually did run a brief little Bloodquest Gaiden thing that involved time travelling and fighting vampires in south Florida, with the MC working with Helen when she was still a car thief. It should be on the suptg archives under the Bloodquest tag. Something along those lines is the closest I would probably want to come to a Bloodquest sequel though.
>>
>>44108230
Cglhannel it to something else.
write your own qu3st, then it won't be fanfiction

>>
>>44108300
That's a tough one. /tg/ is notoriously anti-evil if not outright good, and often go for a paladin bard like character when they can. Getting them to play a villain and stick with it wouldn't be easy. Closest thing I can think of is Orc Warlord.

Kill and destroy as we please, simply because we enjoy it.
>>
>>44108271

No, I mean I want to write stuff set in the same world.

Like a sex scene for Alura, or a Natsumi solo adventure. Or just something for one of those NPCs that show up in crowd scenes. Or a yuri hyades adventure.
>>
>>44108357
Maybe your choices were bad ones.
>>
>>44108300
Give the MC a sympathetic, if very selfish motive.
Make stereotypical "good" choices less beneficial than selfish, "evil" ones.
A lost prince who seeks to regain his rightful kingdom at any cost, something like that.
>>
>>44108300

Somebody who's evil, knows it, but has a code of some morals and does shit for his own personal gain. (Postal-style "Kill everyone for the lulz" characters aren't fun IMO)
>>
>>44108300

Demon Prince Quest. Your father has given you, his Firstborn, to the Devil in return for power and prestige.

In return, you must now use your wealth and status to ensure Hell's domination of Earth. If you succeed, you will rule in Hell and Earth. Demon hunters, exorcists, and even mighty angels stand in your path.

Plus, /tg/ rarely gets to diplomance for evil purposes and this might be fun.
>>
>>44108300

Rigid, stylized evil. The main character is a dark knight, an inquisitor, or some other servant of regimented and disciplined evil. It's a fascist fantasy come to life, complete with jackboots, hordes of men marching in tight rows, pitch-black armor with the odal rune, and all the other cool stuff.

Lots of pomp and circumstances and social backing. Sure you're a pretty awful person, but you do it with societal backing. Something like an executioner tasked with stamping out religious heresy, a infiltrator who worms his way into rebel cells to destroy them from inside out, or a nightmare that bestrides the battlefield bringing misery to everyone.

This would focus on power, authority, and how it feels amazing to be feared and respected.

Hey fellas, I'm giving quest writing a go. I've lurked casually for awhile and wanted to try my hand at it.

Gleeful evil. Sort of like Infernals, where you're someone who's squandered his chance at greatness...But now you have something almost as good. Now you get to be the bully, and by GOD you're going to be even worse. Everyone who ever wronged you is going to eat seven pounds of shit before they die.

It should feel very queasy, very greasy, but very attractive at the same time. You're doing really horrible, really shitty things to people who don't deserve it, but you're finally getting yours at last! It's time to be the asshole you could only dream of becoming, you big man you.

>Imp Quest

Sure, you've been around Hell for millenia - you've been beaten, whipped and pushed around from one Circle to another for thousands of years.

But now you have something that will change everything...in the muck of Hell, you've found something that every Demon knows is a myth, a metaphor, just another one of Lucifer's red herrings.

Something that can't possibly be real.

Something that will change you forever.

In your small, grubby fist you clench a tiny glowing, crimson shard of Original Sin.

With it, you can finally climb the Ladder.
>>
>>44108325
You can make them evil, but the characters inner voice has to be sufficiently charismatic.
>>
What QMCs have been unrepentant bad people in a successful quest?
>>
>>44108538
Sounds like impire
>>
>>44108538

My idea is that you're one of the people picked to receive the blessings of god. You're supremely skilled, you're handsome, you have everything going for you. But the day you're supposed to ascend, everything goes wrong. The gods turn their face from you, because they know you're flawed.

Cast out into the wilderness, something old and terrible finds you instead.
>>
>>44108538
You do know that the original sin wasn't merely disobedience to god, but literally seeking knowledge, right?
>>

>>
>>44108092
>best possible outcome out of a decision
not exactly. It's more along the lines of a choice that they can convince themselves:
a) does no harm(even if it possibly can)
or
b) can be retracted(even if it can't, or never will be due to the way quests are structured)

it's all about the perception of getting something for "free"
>>
>>44108300
for as many responses this is getting, there've been quite a few evil and semi-evil MCs whose quests have flopped.
>>
>>44109070
WQDT doesn't encompass most of the questing community. Lots of different opinions out there.
>>
>>44108614
I wouldn't say that RJ is unrepentant. He's often sympathetic to his opponents and does agree that he's probably more fucked in the head that most of them. And he does genuinely feel guilty for some thing and is trying to right his wrongs in certain ways.
>He's only recently gotten really nasty and spiteful towards his enemies
Nah, he's always been spiteful towards people that have earned his ire.
>>
>>44107922
>How do you show your appreciation to your favourite QM? A hearty thanks for running or something more?
Can't say I have a favourite QM, but I wish could speed doodle and just flood Quests minor art.

Alas, the printer is toast.
>>
>>44109070

/tg/ hasn't seen a good evil quest in a couple years. If you post during primetime with a good hook and OP image you'll definitely get some takers.

If you have real stats, 3d10 rolling and an upgrade tree ala Shadow Quest you'll be guaranteed a following for at least a couple threads. /tg/ is a sucker for upgrade trees.
>>
>>44109184
dude, Journal of the Occult finished a while back.
>>
>>44109184

I use Wiggle and Hard Dice (i.e. Wild Talents) in my Quest, though. Makes things a lot easier. Anyone who claims that they just use 3d10 rolling and has the hero succeed consistently is likely lying. The dice are too crazy without some guaranteed successes.
>>
>>44109204

I kind of assumed that was a thinly veiled smut quest but I've never read it.
>>
>>44109184
Can confirm, players are suckers for even the suggestion of upgradeable abilities.
How do other QMs handle success rolls? I used to do a flat d100 which always seemed to result in just nonstop critical failures.
>>
>>44109316
No....although in retrospect, I can understand why you thought that.

MC enslaved a baby shoggoth after beating it. Beat it up within the confines of her mind, then asked someone else if they wanted to beat it up to relieve stress. Also, you know, civvie death count in the thousands and not a shred of guilt.
>>
>>44109349
As long as the crit window is only 3 or 5 rolls it should be fine with d100s. Even something like the first 20 is okay, as long as the last half have less impact than the first few rolls or something.
>>
>>44109349

I always liked the 2 DC format for three rolls format.

So you set a DC of 65 for pass/fail - first roll over 65 is a success. Then you set a second DC thats hidden at 85 - any roll over 85 also provides a bonus on the next DC to reflect the success.
>>
>>44109349
I'm tempted to go with a D20 system and have a talent they can pick up which improves the crit range from just 20s to 19 and maybe lower, because crits are hype and I can always balance around them.
>>
File: Hunters.jpg (49 KB, 962x409) Image search: [Google]
Hunters.jpg
49 KB, 962x409
Quest idea pitch:

Through a series of one-shot quests, Players get to play certain individuals in a Victorian-era styled city where a disease has been unleashed, mutating people and pushing them to the brink of insanity. They have to try and survive and get to safety. Their decisions might affect the outcome in another characters attempt to survive.

All these one-shot quests (Likely going to be around 3-5) will lead up to a long quest where you play a new Hunter who's part of a guild of Hunters that prey on monsters. You're sent into this crazed city filled with insane and mutated humans, and creatures of the Night (Witches, lycanthropes, vengeful ghosts etc). Your mission is to retrieve the young Queen. Alive. At the same time you have to deal with other Hunters who are also after the bounty for saving the Queen's hide, by either teaming up with them and trusting them to cover your back or killing them. Both decisions carry with them big risks and consequences.

There will be references to the previous one-shots along with items and people that will hint to how the disease and certain strong enemies came to be.

I'm also considering adding a system where players could upgrade their weapons or make new weapons from the creatures they kill.

>And yes, before you say it, I'm taking some inspiration from Bloodborne.
>>
>>44109349
I kinda liked the system that YRQ used for combat:

Roll 3 d20's against primary and secondary DCs, with the secondary being lower than the primary by 2. Crits are 1 and 20, but only if the other rolls confirm them (so a 20 only counts as a Crit success if both the secondary and primary DCs are beaten and the reverse for a Crit failure on 1), otherwise you just get a regular success or failure.

You can also choose from three attributes that determine how you go about the actions you're taking, which determines the DC (as sometimes it's better to rely on brawn than brain and vice versa). Said attributes accumulate/lose successes as the fight goes, providing bonuses to primary/secondary DC rolls or lowering/ primary/secondary DCs after reaching milestones of 5 successes.
>>
>>44108325
If anything Orc Warlord has taught me that it isn't that /tg/ hates playing evil.

/tg/ hates the idea of not being popular and loved by npcs, of being judged for their evil acts harshly.

Ur of Orc Warlord Quest is regularly praised by everyone around (also evil orcs, naturally) him for all the rape and pillage, so /tg/ is okay with it.
>>
>>44109738
So all they really want is validation?

Give them a demon waifu to cohabit their head and cheer them on when they set people on fire and you're set.
>>
>>44109802
Pretty much, it also helps if they have some area of the quest where they can feel like not such a bad guy, being nice to some specific friends, family members or loved ones or something. Helps them rationalize their actions more.
>>
>>44109802
That and benefits. The thing about being blatantly evil is that it generally is neither easy or rewarding. In most Quests, being good is simply the best way to go about things, since it means that you can avoid needlessly making enemies, make more allies, etc.

If you want players to be evil, make it so that good actions are hard and can bring bad consequences while evil ones are rewarding if done right.
>>
>>44108326
Wait what? I thought Joker Quest was antithetical to everything SB stands for?

I'd love to see a Genghis Khan-esque Quest.

You start out with nothing and you're a nobody. You have to fight with tooth and nail to prove your worth and become a leader and gain followers.

Through a combination of outstanding military tactics and merciless brutality, you must crush and unite the many clans and tribes that have been divided by greed, a need for vengeance, and thoughts of cultural or religious superiority for generations.

And as you sweep across the land, crushing anyone in your path, one of the larger tribes take notice of you and challenges your rule. You kill every single of them, and with fear and respect in their hearts, all the other major clans recognize your ferocity and name you their leader; their Khan.

From there on, the unknown world beyond is at your feet to explore and conquer.

>Revolutionary War
>Long live the Queen

Okay, firstly, it's "God save the queen." I am fine with teaboos so long as they actually get it right, god dammit.

Secondly, 'queen'? 'QUEEN'?! We've had exactly SIX female monarchs in England over the years (Seven if you count Empress Matilda, who doesn't really count) and exactly THREE worth a mention in the history books: Elizabeth I, Victoria and Elizabeth II. During the revolution, you would call "God save the KING." King George III in fact. If you're going to do HISTORY, then it'll be done RIGHT, dammit!

Now, I would be interested in running a quest like that, especially that doesn't paint the rebels and the loyalists in black and white terms, but again, already running. Plus I don't feel I could do complexity like that any kind of real justice.

But which would people rather play? Khan Quest, or Revolution Quest?

They could just play it Ork-style, breaking heads until others just fall in line. That'd be rather dull though.

We trip in our own threads or here when it is relevant (or when you're planefag) so the players know it's a post for the quest master. Also, relevant for archive searches. Which is different from a name which are simply dumb. Like you.

All noted for AT-TE Commander Quest. The droids, they never end. (Nah, that'd be too easy.)

Also, update concerning the quest: I am in the process of finishing finals, but unfortunately my computer is on the fritz and is not wanting to start. The fabled QM curse seems to have struck, and I though I was immune after my previous quest attempt..

Oh well.

Monster Hunter has good examples of wacky wyverns and other kooky creatures it'd be nice to tame. Be aware that /tg/ will go straight for taming the dragon if you give them anything resembling one, and failing that, some avian or other flying creature.

Take inspiration from, but don't copy, anything you find cool. Doesn't matter if it's a real animal or not.

Aliens are hellbent on exterminating the human race and the only thing that has stopped them from achieving this goal is a strike force of cutting edge mechs. An ent goes to town to buy some hobby specific items. Unfortunately, all the humans seem to have been hit by some kind of wasting parasite that makes them all bite-y and unconstructive.

Are -you- a persistent enough tree to track the path of your precious hobby goods to their place of manufacturing?
