Honestly, I'd say something like Magus. Sword and Spell together.
Japan loves it's magic swordsmen in their draconic questings, and the West likes their sword in one hand and fireball in the other in their Elderly Scrollings.
Plus from a purely practical standpoint you wouldn't want to overspecialise in something like dungeon delving. Every role should be able to be filled by another. Lose a healer, or tank, or arcanist, you should have a backup.
The Fighter.
Preferably a Young Male of Human or some kind of Elf related origin.
He has no remarkable traits or special abilities except his outstanding braveness and strength/cleverness.
He is often aided by (but does in seldom cases primarily depends on) Magic Artifacts or Companions, that he aquired through his said braveness, strength/cleverness.

But thinking DND crawling, nobody does it alone. Most art has 4-5 classes in the scene.

I think you are both on to it. Young human (or humanish). Average build, average height, short/medium brown hair. Boyish good looks, but not super handsome or muscular. Moderately armed and armored. He should be a jack-of-all-trades. He probably has above average skill in all important fields of adventuring (eg, fighting, magic, stealth, ect). He lacks the skill and a dedicated fighter or mage, but he probably has more potential in the long run. He's courageous and good hearted, but also naive and slightly reckless. He probably has a set of stock companions, burly fighter, and clever wizards, a cunning thief. He has a love interest, who is probably a princess. Bonus points if he pursues the princess but ends up with one of his adventuring companions.
Goal is widest appeal, not originality. After all, we are talking iconic, not best.
