Can be fine. Some people had shitty lives. Adversity can strongly affect how a person acts and thinks.

> lone wolf
Usually bad. Lone wolf characters usually work against how an adventuring party is meant to function. They want more solo activities and cooperate less often. This can work if it's played really well but it's a delicate balance to keep up. I wouldn't trust most players with it.
>>
>>44099262
Neither of these things are inherently bad.

I will concede though if a person uses those exact words to describe their characters then maybe I might be concerned

I actually played a game with a racist female elf played by a guy, and the elf was racist because humans had killed "her" entire village, "She" was also possessed by a shade, the guy sucked at playing a female and tried to be the party leader, but constantly said "she" didn't want to be the party leader, constantly ran off and tried to do stupid shit, tried to purchase poison at the docks of a major city, where poison is illegal to purchase, completely ignoring my statement of that fact as my character was a native and knew the laws, it was like a fucked up Bruce Jenner story.

>Doesn't want the fact that he's royalty to come up later
>>
>>44102155
You think so? I'll make a character backstory just out of the posts so far. By the looks of things our PC is.

1. A lone wolf with a dark past.
2. A hero for fun.
3. Has a bright future and is a social butterfly.
4. Was raised by wolves.
5. Is royalty.
6. Is sexy.
7. Is a peasant.
8. Finds reality boring and wants to remake it.
9. Used to be strongly religious and wants to become a god.
10. Is an overweight father of four who looks like John Goodman.

John Wallstrong was born 40 years ago, the son of King Wallstrong, abandoned when a seer prophesied he would bring doom to the world. He was found and adopted by a she-wolf, who raised him as her own. When he was a young man, he was found by peasants, who took him to their village, where he became admired for his strength and beauty, becoming the adopted son of the village priest. After he became a man, he sought out to do great deeds as a knight-errant, a hero for his own pleasure, with a bright future ahead of him.

Somewhere on his adventure, he learned his ideals were twisted, and the god he so passionately served as a myth, a collection of tales from ancient times with no voice behind them.

Despairing, he decided to go home and marry his sweetheart neighbor, and with the farmgirl raised a family, forgetting his past hopes and ideals. Now in his forties, John is having a mid-life crisis. He remembers the dreams of his youth, and they haunt him.

He sets out for high adventure, with only the feeling of emptiness, and an old crone's prophecy to accompany him. A god you lost, and so a god shall be, son of the King.
>>

Does he fuck his mom?
>>
>>44102268
>>44102292

This is what I don't get.

When I think of the "character is secretly royalty" arc, I think of Aragorn and I've always been under the impression people who want to go that route see him as a big source of inspiration. In the movies, it's brought up pretty early and even though he gets squirrely about it he never moves into angst territory. In the books it's one of the first things he reveals to the Hobbits when they meet him, and in fact his original plan was to break off from the Fellowship when they reached Anduin so he could go be king.

I personally think that someone who wants to be a king but needs to do something/prove himself first is a much more interesting arc than someone who just wants to flake out from it.

...One of my villains actually fits most of these criteria.
There was an old god of dragons who let go of his immortality and died because he saw that it was time for his descendants and the non-draconics to take hold of the land.
Except his descendants didn't take it well and are now trying to resurrect him.
One of them in particular sees all the things his people could have and despaired before selling his soul to make it so.

>Lone Wolf
Played in a game with a druid (not DnD, homebrew) who was sorta a lone wolf whenever he could manage it. He was also the group's medic.

He was an awkward mix of extremely loyal and excessively paranoid. He did actually end up being correctly paranoid and going lone wolf when the party kept picking the wrong fights - and thus was in the perfect place to accomplish the objectives alone or be our outside man in breaking out of yet another jail. When we actually we planned for direct confrontation he was always there and saved asses, including the time an assassination failed utterly. Stabilized the mage in the chaos then booked it, utilizing some astounding forward thinking things to his advantage. One he was a master of disguise, two as a druid he could heal like a motherfucker, and three had leveled somewhat recently to gain minor shapeshifting features.

So as the party was rounded up and imprisoned after that fiasco to await trial, he had hid out somewhere, used his healing powers to do the equivalent of major surgery (he'd gotten shot in the face near the start of the campaign and rather than let anyone know he was a druid and fix it instantly underwent turn-of-the-century style surgery, he spent most of the campaign with half a jaw and a very distinctive face), then switched into a set of spare clothes he brought, and started changing his appearance so he looked more like an orc than a half-elf.

So they were searching for a half-elf that had come with us with half a jaw and he hid in plain sight as a short half-orc with a full jaw. From that position he covered our tracks and got the various position markers for astronomical components to our emergency teleport spell across town with his animal command. He even managed to get critical information out of the npc we came to interrogate/assassinate, then get out of the place himself.

Character played a druid more like a combat medic/spy. He was pretty great.

In my setting, farming and harvesting takes place over a span of two months. That is, you plant one month, then harvest the next. It's more realistic that way.

Following this, I decided that farmers should not gain exp from each bale of crop harvested, but by each crop sold. Again, it feels more natural and intuitive that way.

Going by this, you will harvest around 10 bales every other month. From this, the nobility owning the land takes 8 bales from you (Read a history book, this is how things worked in the real world). That leaves 2 bales for you. However, you need one of those to feed you and the other to feed your family.

So in short, 0.5 exp every month. If you let your family starve, that is. So anyway, tell me about this farmer character of yours. Let's see if you worked out a good character concept.

More or less this.

Chaotic Neutral, on the extremely rare occasion it's played well, is all about personal freedom and doing what feels good -- but that might not necessarily be hedonism, because helping others can feel good, and so can doing what you please. When played poorly, it's lolsorandumb xD I kick the puppy then give it candy random-ass unpredictable stupid shit trash garbage for shit players.

Neutral Evil is entirely about self-interest and fuck anyone who gets in the way. When played well, the NE character understands that his chances of survival are much higher while allied to this cohesive trustworthy group of strong adventurers, and thus won't fuck them over.

Hey Ethan! A quick word of advice for the future: if you're adamant about whining behind someone's back on a board you know they frequent literal minutes after talking to them on skype about the same grievance, at least make a passing effort to try disguising the talking points so they aren't identical to the things you were just talking about.

Not only did I explain to you that I'm just trying to run a reactive world and make the setting respond appropriately to the gung-ho brute force methods you insist on employing to solve every situation, (I've told you several times that both Kobolds and Ogres are sentient creatures capable of negotiations, your decision to slaughter them before they can get a word out is on you, not me) but I also said that if you still had a problem with my response we could discuss it as a group next time we met.

But since you decided to do this instead, let me solve this problem for both of us. Don't come back next week.

I had a player (recently got fed up with his shit and kicked him) who did this a lot. In every game we played, we would play the exact same character: a noble of some type with disdain for plebs. He always asked for more money (which I usually refused) and got upset when npcs and the party didn't treat him liked royalty. He was also fond of using annoying logic to try and get out of situations, usually more complicated than its worth.

A guy writing a story can work the boring guy in, He can hook him and whatnot.

His wife is also pregnant, and the Vampire Lord will be turned into his true form when the child is born. So he has to kill her before she gives birth, also murdering his unborn child.

As well, this birth would free his wife from being the Vampire Lord so he is killing his Wife and his unborn child.

Plus the reason his unborn child was picked was because he was prophesied to bring an end to the war between the beings of the night and the humans. So picking him was kind of a twofer for the Vampire Lord.

The Knights of Generic Good know about the prophecy, but his wife framed him for the deaths and so they are fighting him thinking that HE is the Vampire Lord trying to kill his wife and stop the prophecy, so he is forced to slay countless innocents, fighters for justice although he always tries to reason with him they never believe him.

He can't not kill them, because he gets berserker powers that are the reason why he originally became a vampire hunter, and once people attack him he can't stop fighting until they're dead. Only his wife was ever able to snap him out of it with the power of TRUE LOVE - but like I said, now she's evil.

He will also find a squire to help him along the way, and will see a vision of a beautiful women that snaps him out of his rage before killing plot-convenient innocents (not the knights though) and think it is his wife's spirit. But really it will turn out to be his squire who is really a woman and someone whom he loves but he will feel guilty about it and refrain from banging her even though she is his true soulmate - because she is also the fraternal twin and half-soul of his wife.

I feel dirty now.

Perfect!

And he is Shinji levels of angst and Berserk. And his Wife is also his Mother through time shenanigans and the child is actually him, and the son of the Vampire Lord. But Time shenanigans (I leave the math to you) means that he got sent back in time and eventually met his mother/wife and got keked by the VL which is also how he possessed his wife. This also explains his berserk not!Vampire power since it's his dark side taking over and if he ever releases too much of his power he'll go full Vampire Lord.

It also implies that he fails his quest, but he is going on determined to do what's right regardless even if he has to fight fate itself.
>>
So how DO you play as royalty/nobility /tg/? Only stuff I've figured is to not be the heir, preferably not being very likely to become the heir outside of a large number of deaths, and not being a cunt about wanting your status to get you too much shit.

>>44111410
This is why I will never play with anyone from /tg/. Oh, forget sword and board, that's not realistic enough, he wields a spear.
>>
>>44111404
make him a vampire too, but one that hates what vampires are with such a passion that he goes against his base instincts and seeks to become a paragon of 'good' despite the vampiric inclination to be evil/drink blood.

Maybe his goodness allows him to walk in the day/aboveground.
He dual-wields 2 unique swords; both a cross between a sabre and a katana, that have handles with little-blades in that pop out and dice the hand of anyone who try to use said sword but him.
Then have him embroiled in a huge conspiracy that links to the settings BBEG directly.

And you could also make him a tax-dodging, anti-government black guy with unique colour eyes...

this is taking the piss of Blade and Drizzt for those not seeing it
>>
>>44111843
You either need to be really unwilling to do basically anything yourself or you need to have firm roots in your country's military. Preferably the latter if you actually intend to accomplish anything as an adventurer.

A mediocre/lazy GM will go "here's some richboy shit and some extra cash", but realistically the better boons of your station would be access to training with specialists and excellent tutors, and you should damn well try to convince the GM of this. A noble is more likely to be able to afford that master that knows the secret sword arts of the White Raven or the old wizard tutor able to teach the finer crafts of spell-slinging. Depending on your station you may get access to both.

Additionally, as a noble, you will usually have some sort of family armor/weapon passed down over generations. How good this shit can be will depend on your GM, but it probably shouldn't be all that powerful (in D&D terms, +2 at most) unless you're major nobility or nosebleed-section royalty.

The biggest issue in the roleplay aspect is motivation. Even a military-groomed noble is still a noble, who at the end of the day still doesn't actually need to work a day of their life for coin. You need to come up with some reasoning for why you're an adventurer, be it for the short term or long term. Actually, being the Heir can open more doors if your campaign is going to take place over multiple kingdoms/regions, as you can start forging alliances now in the event of your predecessor's untimely(or timely) demise, or take personal action against enemy factions with your PC-ness. If you dont' want to be the Heir, you can always take the Tales of the Abyss route and have your noble unwillingly stuck with the party for the time being.

Ultimately, the impact a noble has is a little severe, though, so you should always consult with your GM first.

Hope this helps.
>>
>>44111855
Personally, I've been having fun playing an Alchemist/Pimp who essentially roids up his Hos with potions before sending them into battle.

My GM was even kind enough to do up separate tables for OD'ing on crits and getting bunk shit on "fumbles". Also, I don't actually make the potions buy I score them off skeevy dudes in town. I can try to cook them down into more potent forms though.

It's been pretty fun. Playing with another dude who is a schizophrenic Good Cop/Bad Cop "Paladin" whose union essentially made his order supply him with magic items to simulate his powers after he fell (due to an accident that happened on the job site) and a Sorcerer that insists he's a bard and focuses mainly on charm and illusion spells to hide the fact that he can't actually play more than 3 songs.

It's honestly more racist than anything else how we play. A Dindu Pimp, A good old boy Cop, and a Frat Bro are our archtypes pretty much.
>>
>>44111855
It's just some vocal nofunallowed faggots. You get those everywhere experienced tabletop player exist.

It's easier to say "I don't want anything non-realistic" as opposed to "I'm okay with you going slightly chunni and/or justifiably edgy so long as you can moderate yourself and not go overboard with it". Genuinely interested people that are willing to negotiate in a sane manner will usually be met with equal sanity. Anybody that doesn't meet your request with at least an attempt at an open mind probably isn't somebody you want as a GM anyway.

i have this character (the player is fine because he plays other characters fine), he's the typical abrasive, lone wolf, snarky, wants to be the best naruto-style character. he insisted on having his backstory being the best fighter in the guild, which i forced him to be the second best because the reoccurring villain is the best.

ANYWAY

i want to kill him. which, i know as a DM is terrible, but i want to kill off his jackass character so he can make a better one. problem is, i dont want him to suspect im singling him out. how can a have all of the enemies and traps focus on him without him getting upset?

There are reasons that not playing the heir would also have some great reasons to adventure. Like if they are so low down they don't really have a chance of getting anything good so they're working to get their own stuff with the skills and gear their parents' money bought. Or one thing I've read before is that they're the eldest female and only have sisters and fear that their dad will eventually sire a male and thus need some of their own money and land.

Honestly i just feel like the heir is too high of a position to give to a player unless they're really minor nobility or it could be worked with the rest of the group.

>Consider themselves original for making a player character with no unique merits and actively degenerating whatever game they get their disgusting hands into

The comparison is valid because dirtfarmerfags think their unrefined, plain, ordinary, mockery of a protagonist, which I should fucking remind you is a character that is supposed to be interesting enough for the story to follow, is as valid as someone else's character that they actually put effort into. Hence the comparison.

I know most of /tg/ hates the whole

but what about the trope of
>my character is royalty but doesn't know it

>Caring about what people on the internet think about your character period

Expect a civil war to put you on the hit list of some 8th-in-line guy who expects you to do the same because you're a spot behind him.
I like it, though.

Try to use that Naruto attitude against him?
Have a situation in which you can run away or try fighting some enemy, then reveal only after Naruto guy begins fighting that the enemy is tougher than he seemed, or that there are more waiting in ambush.
Any other party members who joined in fighting rather than running could recognize how hopeless the situation is, and run away, but try to keep goading Naruto to keep fighting hopeless battle. Maybe even set it up so that Naruto guy is sacrificing himself to buy others time to escape.

>Decker who was ounce a highly dangerous street samurai.
>He became a decker because he spent to much time inside with his money and a shit ton of apple pies. He's fat now and fights mainly through drones he had to awkwardly borrow from a decker friend.
This was my last character.

i'm not familiar with this class, is this shadowrun?

That's correct.

Samurai is fine, it's like being a knight. Your high class is based on your ability to fight.

I'm talking about those "Oh I'm a princess who wants to fight bad guys and be bad ass!" and then find a ragtag group of people that are as inexperienced as they are, when they got the whole world by the balls and could pick any kind of seasoned veterans. It just doesn't fit right in my eyes, it's like the president picking bouncers from random clubs in a city to be his body guards rather than the CIA who are 10x more trained and qualified to keep such an important person alive.

It's just hard to validate someone of royalty importance expending their lives while also being level 1 with a bunch of other level 1s when a town guard could body them all in an instant. There is like high class society where people want to fight and those people can end up being expendable and not have a whole kingdom crumble and suffer a great loss, and just saying "lol I'm a princess/prince!"

I just had a good idea for a character:

They are some 3rd or fourth son of a non notable royal family, and believes they are very important. However, when they try to ask for freebies and respect from npcs, the npcs will have never heard of them, or maybe think they are crazy. Could create some fun conflict.
