Welcome to A Song of Revenge and Gold: House Malroy Quest. In which you take the reins of a House of storied glorious past since Aegon’s Conquering, but whose fortunes have taken a turn for the worse in the doom that Robert’s Rebellion brought. Taking place in 284AC a year after the Rebellion has ended you are Brynden Malroy, second son to Lord Vamos Malroy and Lady Esemella Hayford and the last living heir to Steadhold and House Malroy.

House Malroy is a pre-genned House designed around the idea of a story within the Crownlands of a House fiercely loyal to the Targaryens and their attempts to live in this new world after Robert’s Rebellion. The new Lord Brynden Malroy is as well pre-genned but will take direction from the players in his ways and how he develops himself further. This Quest will be moderately more story driven than others of its kind, but the development of the House and her lands will take just as much importance.

If you’ve played the one of the many Quests within the ASoIaF setting the rules of the SIFRP system should be known. I will be using the Game of Thrones edition, as well as a few of the expansions namely OOSP and a few house rules which will be explained as we come to them. If you have questions about how things work or why certain actions are taken I can explain them as we go along. In truth this is a learning experience for me as well.

And now without further ado.

Steadhold had become busy in your short time away from her, exceedingly busy almost. Wesley’s Melee had drawn quite the turnout from the local regions and more than a few had already arrived for the event, from your solar in the castle proper you could see the sea of colors and standards from across the realm. It was surreal, mere months ago the yard was nothing more than mud and broken wood, a memory of its former glory. Now it was beautiful, freshly sodden, alive with the sounds of merriment and jest. Gawen had his hands full with all of the horses that had come along with their masters but it served his purposes as well, coin passed hands to examine pedigrees, receive his stamp of approval, in some cases if the colors and blood were strong he would pay for a round of studding of the horse. Every evening one of his stablehands would report a sum to Maester Benjin and he would tally it with the ever increasing list. Gawen’s services to your family had been invaluable for decades, but now it truly spoke to you his worth, the opinion of such a master of his craft, there was worth in your horses to be certain, but their keeper knew how to pull every penny. Your cousin to say the least was nothing but smiles, his months of hard work having finally paid off, the ever growing lists, nearing two hundred now, made the young man giddy. But he handled it all with a seriousness, he understood there was more to this than the martial prowess of Knights, there was an element of posturing of your own purpose. Across the bridge you would stare, hard, unflinching, and dare him. Dare that bloody bastard to respond. Would he be so bold? You had no idea, but in your heart of hearts you wished for foolish action, a single misstep.
>>
Having finished dressing yourself you decide it is time to attend your monthly meeting, it was hardly a matter of importance this month, simply a quick recap and your signatures and blessing of the decisions Ser Mason Flowers had made. Your old friend had settled into his role with a quick easiness that almost startled you, he had made purpose to gather as much wealth as he could and was on a constant recruiting mission, the Sons of Gold and their patrols about your lands had drummed up support from more than a few sources. The smallfolk, meager as they were, had been happy for the presence of trained military, the Loyal Bows and your new regiment of infantry had practiced often in areas of high visibility. You were flexing your muscles so to speak, the merchants that traveled the Goldroad and Blackwater Rush had appreciated the gesture and you noted an increase in holdover trade in Steadhold’s markets, There was a fair amount of stands in the town’s circle as well, taking over the once desolate area replacing it with the hustle and bustle of trade that came with your guests. All the while Mason had kept up with the upkeep of the castle, working with Gawen and Elionwy to ensure an easy few months, all the while beginning his own self improvements as Master-of-Arms, there were a fair fewer aides about the armory, scouring plate and mail, keeping the horses, sharpening blades, fletching arrows with blackened shafts, and there was even a lad Mason had begun to teach his letters and numbers to keeping an inventory of your House’s stores. It seemed odd to remember Mason being so worried of your military, and in a few short months you were now here, not a military power by any stretch, but enough of a resurgent one to remind your neighbours what your House was once known for, your father would have been proud.
>>
The trip to the great hall was short as it always was from your chambers, before opening the door you took a deep breath, steadying yourself, grounding. You were a Lord. The Lord of Steadhold and her domains, this was your home, these were your people. They were your focus now, the grand games of the Realm could wait a few months until your betrothed arrived, until such time you need make your name not one to be trifled with, nor so haphazardly thrown aside. You push through, a wave of quiet rippling from your point, all eyes turnt to you. Your small council already waited, standing on the dias in a neat line, the shining plate of Mason and Lucas capping either end, the beauty of Elionwy of Myr in stark contrast to the rugged nature of Gawen, and the elderly Benjin looking all the more for it by your cousin Ser Wesley Hayford. To the side Ser Dontos Malroy stands with two young squires flanking his sides, the left your own Arron Qorgyle clad in scarlet and black, looking nervously about as he often did in his new home and to his right, your son Victus Waters, smiling his lopsided gappy smile. It looked as if your entire household was in attendance, but it mattered little, your steps echoing throughout the hall, announcing your presence, usually enough to make them give leave, but today they stood, in silence, waiting, watching. You noted Mors the Marsher, with the Jons by his side. the Sons as well, Solhas Za Tarbeck, Barq Zos, Yondril, Ser Victor Haigh, and the captain of your infantry, Rafe Roper you had only met briefly. Mason is the first to break ranks and meets you halfway, a gesture to the side brings a servant with a platter of two cups that minds the gap between the two of you, his out stretched hand finally connecting you two in a short moment of relief from the quiet. He smiles, broadly, and suddenly it dawns on you, there was purpose in this little gathering, and this bloody bastard was the source of it.
>>
“Welcome home my Lord,” he says, calling you such felt so odd to hear from the man that had screamed, ‘Brynden you bloody whoreson!’ across the battlefield more than once in Essos. He hands you the goblet of wine, taking his own and walking past you raising it. As you had walked through the hall others had been given their own goblets, your eyes glaze over your council being given their own as you turn to watch Mason.

“Today. We celebrate, people of Steadhold. Our Lord, the head of this House, the man that brought together a Household of misfits from beyond the Narrow Sea, of across the realm, and focused them to singular purpose. Despite what whispers may have you think Lord Brynden Malroy is a humble man, having thrown off the yoke of his name and all it demanded once, for a simple notion, love. He did not wish for this, did not envy his brothers, he only wished for his own future. To be remembered by those he loved, to be have his pockets lined with gold, to be the best bloody sellsword across the Narrow Sea,” Mason throws a smile to you, having walked down the hall across from you, “But it was not his fate, his destiny. Tragedy is what brought this House together as you see her now. In another life no man here would find himself calling Myrmen his brother’s in arms, no man would find love in the oddest of quiet place, no man would know what it is what like to be united as one under a man such as Lord Brynden Malroy. So today, we celebrate, to his honor, to his return, to the announcement of his betrothal to Lady Obella Qorgyle of Dorne, and to a future. Ride unto the Sunset!”
>>
The hall echoes his words, raising their cups in approval, while you stare dumbfounded at your old friend, his cup extended your way, his nod indicating your own. You bring the cup to bear and raise it yourself, drinking in the cheers of your Household and drink to Mason’s toast. The sweet red fills you with a confidence, feeling as if you were drinking in more than just the alcohol. Your Knight meets you again and pulls you to his side, your eyes catch the hall beginning to empty finally, and you are lead to your seat upon the dias. A small nod of acknowledgement around the table allows them to be seated, squires taking their positions behind their respective sponsors, even Victus, a first for your Uncle. Eliowny kisses Mason on the cheek and his pale flesh turns red immediately, eliciting a laugh from yourself. Benjin looks over his papers, finishing a conversation with Gawen of his opinion of matter not yet known to you.

“My Lord. Now that Ser Mason is done stroking your ego, perhaps you may wish to speak of a few matters?” Mason laughs and you cannot help to join him, Lucas and Wesley doing so as well, even Dontos cracks a smile. Your Maester rolls his eyes and pushes forward three particular documents,”Any of these my Lord.”

>Speak of matters of the Melee

Seems the most urgent and i dont think we should even consider war yet. Prepare for it just in case but that should really only be it. It depends on things go once we return to Kings Landing for our reward.

Also the next time we roll for House Fortune we should probably get Population.

Note: we need to arrange a meeting with the hand as soon as possible.

Father. Think there is a chance we could invite the House Thorne to either the melee or the wedding ?

While i dont think we can make friends with them i do hope we could patch things up with them so they atleast wont be against us.
>>
>>44093391
What he did wasn't even that bad to be honest. He only humiliated us and nothing else.

>>44093468
We might as well send out invitations to celtigar and his little alliance as well. I doubt to hell they'll accept but at least it'll be polite.

We are sending that wedding invite to Bobby B right?

Yeah. Because what he wants is to be in a castle full of Dornishmen and Valyrians.

Exchanging glances about the table finally calms itself and you fix Benjin’s papers with a seriousness. You pick at each before settling on a relatively easy target for your gathered council, and one you know Wesley is itching to speaking of, “Let us begin with the Melee, Benjin.”

“Very well my Lord. Ser Wesley?”

Your young cousin nearly jumps out of his seat in his eagerness to speak of the Melee, “Cous- My Lord. The Tourney grounds were finished while we awayed, I do imagine they meet your standards?”

“Of course Wesley, I believe they meet more than just mine if our turnout is any indication.”

Wesley nods and Benjin interjects, “By our tallies we can expect a turnout of no less than three hundred my Lord. The majority of the Knights that have arrived are of the Noble Houses of the Realm my Lord, no doubt Hedge Knights will fill out the rest of the lists.”

Three hundred was a far more impressive number than you had expected, you suppose your rather loud arrival home in the past months drummed up a little more interest. That among them only twenty were to come into your service was incredible, and a few of your Household had intended to join as well. Wesley, Duncan, Lucas, all had intentions. You were still far below your new minimal after the Tourney in King’s Landing, fifty was far more an impressive number but you hardly the strength to bring in the extra numbers to fill them out now, not in such sort notice. Perhaps later, you could always use more riders or perhaps if your sanctions were raised yet again a cadre of footed Knights. Thoughts for later.
>>
“A few weeks yet remain my Lord,” Wesley continues, “Of course House Longwaters and Conklyn will be attending, and obviously mine own, Hayford, and I do believe Chelsted and Chyttering. It is a shame House Qorgyle simply cannot with so little time, but I believe we could invite a few more highborn guests if you are so inclined. Beyond that our stores are stocked, though the guests do tap our cellars with every passing day, if I may suggest at the beginning of the month when our incomes come in, an extra dragon towards a feast of magnitude would be appreciated.”

You frown, not entirely sure of exactly who else you would invite now. Many of your neighbours were your enemies or simply didn’t care for you such, old grudges died hard. The other Valyrian Houses were not particularly fond of you at the moment, nor was House Benedorn where you aunt resided. Spending extra money to keep your guests happy however was not entirely beyond you, the more highborn guests that attended the more it would be necessary as well.
>>
Mason speaks in the silence the matter reminding him of something of note, “Brynden. While you were away the first of the guests that had arrived was a small group from the Westerlands. Two Knights, a squire and the man they were escorting. They requested to speak to you when you had arrived.”

The mere mention makes the hairs on your neck stand up, Westerland Knights? You hadn’t thought they would attend, tensions certainly weren’t light in the region. Though clearly they intended to compete if they had arrived so early. Your face twists in thought and the table speaks in quieter tones, Benjin asking Mason of particular numbers that he cannot recall that Elionwy fills in for in her silent way. You catch her eyes glancing to your silver hair here and there, a bite of her lower lip showing a degree of worry yet still. Many small things, yet worthwile.

If you want to get a lay of the land here's the realm at large, I've mentioned it before but in this canon you replace House Rollingford in location. So there's your immediate options.

Thorne, Stokeworth, Rosby, and Buckwell. All easy enough.

>>44093859
Wow that is random as hell. I mean I get it they were Targaryen Loyalist, but sure fuck it.

I'll be handling this as a Status test, with Benjin rolling. Just to make it easier.

Any others?
>>
>>44093949
The Selmy's? They seem pretty far away, though.
>>
>>44093949
I don't think we should invite the valyrian houses, but what about the Crackclaw Point ones? Brune and Crabb are my suggestions.
>>

Little too far yes.

>>44094043
I can do both of those.

Alright don't see any particular support for anything else.

So we'll invite:

Thorne
Stokeworth
Rosby
Buckwell
Brune
Crabb
& randomly Caffen, because that doesn't look suspicious

I'll handle the rolls off screen for that and let you guys know later. Time to talk to some Westerlanders.

I can only imagine how it is for the merchants coming from the west.

Having to pretty much sprint through Redward lands to get away as quickly as possible into the safty of Malroy land. We should probably bring that up to the westerland envoy. Their merchants and fewer and poorer than usual.
>>
“Benjin, ready invites for these Houses,” you say having scribbled down a few of your neighbours, and others among the Crownlands, you were unsure if any would even respond, Stokeworth and Rosby seemed more firmly in the Crown’s pocket, Buckwell and Thorne were mysteries, and the only reason the Crackclaw Point Houses came to mind was because you had seen their colors among the lists already.

“I’ve a few suggestions myself, nephew,” Dontos interrupts, his face looking slightly off, “House Fell and Cafferen are both close enough to the Crownlands to still attend. They were once allies of your late Uncle, Lord Luther Benedorn if I remember correctly.”

And by allies you knew he meant Loyalists, they were unknowns to you, in far more ways than you preferred, and Dontos was being rather blatant with his intentions this time. Boldly so even. It was unlike him. But perhaps there was reason.

“Very well Uncle, Benjin add them as well.”

“As you say my Lord.”

Turning to another matter you face Mason again, “Mason who are these Westerland Knights?”

“From your cousin’s lists the two that have entered in the grand Melee are Ser Titus Sarsfield and Ser Lyonel Hill. The former’s squire, Robb Brax has entered in the Squire’s Melee. However while you were away they did not wish to speak of their escorted guest. Only wishing to speak to you directly.”
>>
Frowning again you wave a hand aimlessly, supposing you should send for them, before Mason responds with the question you nod and he sends a page after them. Apparently they had not been far, perhaps waiting in the foyer. The Knights as described flank a rather portly man in simple brown robes, with a crystal hung by leather thong about his neck. He is balding but there is still a golden yellow to his hair. Behind him follows a tall and lean boy with the first dusting of hair upon his cheeks, not much younger than Wesley if you had to guess at it. They bow as one before the dias, with the man in robes standing first to your summons.

“My Lord, my name is Septon Tytos, but a humble servant of the Seven above,” he says, still bowed to a degree, “I had heard word that your Sept has stood empty far too long, and I came with these good Knights in hopes of attending the needs of your populace and home. If you would so allow it my Lord.”

Dontos perks up and suddenly an interest is in his eyes, you had not been entirely sure of where to find a Septon, you were good at throwing coin at projects to begin them, and luckily your household was good at finishing them out. The name sat oddly with you though, particularly from the Westerlands, and you are not entirely sure of how to respond.

>Any questions for Septon Tytos?

>>44094298

I may need to shift around what we're doing today if that's the case.

So since it's a melee, is there going to be no jousting and 1v1 foot fights, or will they just not be the focus of the tournament?
>>
>>44094420
Melee will have group fights and will end with 1v1 fights of the winners from the group fights.
>>
“Tytos? Named for the late Lord Tytos Lannister?” you ask with a quirked eyebrow.

He grimaces, “Rather I had been named at the same time my Lord. But yes, one and the same, I was once a Lanny of Lannisport. A name long since lost to me.”

There is a sudden tension in the air, you glance over to Mason, and he is suddenly very quiet and without a smile upon his face, he hadn’t known or realized. You could hardly place the blame on him, it was unlikely every man woman and child that passed through Steadhold could be screened, but it still disconcerted you.

“Septon Tytos, you are aware the last time a Lannister stepped foot in Steadhold she was nearly razed to the ground, and I found myself with one less brother and father?” you respond in a flat tone. Ser Lyonel and Titus both tense up in response, with the squire behind not entirely sure of what had just occurred.

“Very, my Lord, there are very few who do not. They were but soldiers, following orders under the banner of the Lion, but it was an ill thing that occurred here.”

“Then why have you come?”

“To repent my Lord. The Faith demands as such. To heal old wounds. In the name of peace. I would not expect to be invited into your home, not immediately, perhaps never. But if in some small way I can help, I ask that I be allowed.”
>>
Quiet fills the room again, Dontos’ rasping upon the oaken table being the only noise to break it, you turn to him and he looks put out by the situation. His faith was his driving force, the Sept being rebuilt had been done in hopes of rebuilding your relationship with your Uncle, at least to some extent. But he held that grudge against the Westerlands harder than you had, this sat with him poorly to say the least.

“My Lord, if I may speak,” Ser Lyonel asks in an attempt to break the silence. You wave him leave, and he coughs, gathering his thoughts, “Septon Tytos is my granduncle, and while the honor of the Lannister name may be called into question he is no longer of them. He is a good man through and through. When we arrived he did not wish to intrude, we waited, did not call upon your castellan in excess. He held service before your Sept, inspected it, gave blessings to births and married no less than twenty of the smallfolk. He is earnest in his wishes, I would add my voice to his in requesting your leave to serve.”

“And I as well,” Ser Titus adds, Robb Brax chiming in afterwards.

You pinch the bridge of your nose, it was a frustrating situation, the people’s happiness spoke to easier dealings with them, but that name. It bothered you. It bothered Dontos. But if were to be kept at a distance it would be easier to watch him, if old loyalties had not died a disgraced Septon was a fair blow to your opposition.

>Accept Septon Tytos service (He’ll only stay in the Sept, never coming to the castle without your leave)

Open Field (To trim the fat)
Team Rounds (To get us down to the 20 that will enter your service)
And then singles in a bracket to determine the winner and who will become the Captain of the company.

I feel like it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. If we send him away, the Lannisters use it to disparage our character. He's definitely still on the family payroll, though, so if we let him in we're giving an enemy spy our blessings and access to the hearts and minds of our smallfolk.

What do we gain by letting him in if we spend a bunch of time and resources keeping an eye on him?

It's not worth sending him away, not when we've already gotten plenty of lessons in how easily the Queen takes offence and how not worth it it is.

The Queen is 100% guaranteed to get mad if we send him away and there's a better than even chance he's harmless anyway. Don't let him into the castle and have someone keep an eye on him

He's a Lanny, not a Lannister. It's like the Starks vs the Karstarks. It's a very low chance that he's on the payroll of the main Lannister family and it's not worth the 100% chance that the Queen will get mad at us again.

We don't let him in the castle and he only does his job as Septon with us checking in occasionally. The dude isn't going to start a smallfolk rebellion.

You sigh, gaining looks from the Knights and squire, and a passive look from the Septon, “Very well Septon Tytos, you may serve in Steadhold. However, you will not enter the castle without my leave. Is this understood?”

“Of course my Lord. I am grateful for the opportunity, and that the Seven guided you to the choice of peace,” he responds with a smile, gentle in his elderly years. You would need to keep an eye on him, he was unassuming, but that is how they all were. A Lanny, not a Lannister, but blood runs deep. Damned if you did, damned if you didn’t. At least you were not being naive of the situation, no doubt Dontos would be on his toes as well. At the very least your smallfolk would be happy, and it was an albeit small political maneuver. And the Lannisters surely would not be so stupid to send someone with intentions of spying upon you in such a high profile position, surely. For now, this would do.

The Westerlanders leave off with the usual courtesies and you shake your head free of the thoughts, you had wanted a simple topic and it annoyed you immensely that it had turned to this instead, “Benjin, I am in a mood now, let us speak of matters of war.”

Your Maester, looking far less comfortable himself nods and pulls the notes upon the subject, “Ser Mason could speak better to this than I my Lord. As of now however in the coming months our numbers will be 360. Far less than those that the Hand shared with you, and nearly half of our allowed numbers. At the most I do believe we will be 25 strong amongst our Knights, assuming the worst of our own,” he says. There was an extra 20 in there you had not been aware of and turn to Mason looking for an answer while Lucas and Wesley snickered to each other of the field.

“I received an opportunity while you were away Brynden. Gawen advised me on the matter,” your Master-of-Horses nods, “A man named Danse of Duskendale arrived with men, and offered their services. He claimed to be a survivor of the Battle of the Trident, and tha-”

“He was friends with Donold?”

Mason stops and fixes you with an odd look, “Yes how did you..?”

Dusky Danse as he was better known was a freedrider your brother had befriended in their youths, you were use to the lowborn man as a constant attendant of Donold, his tall dark shadow, not unlike Solhas or Barq Zos were to you. He had a drop of Summer Islander in him you always imagined, just enough to earn him his nickname, and he had been the captain of your brother’s cavalry up until you had left. It was a miracle that he was still alive at all, among him members of your House’s former cavalry as well, all veterans of war, a much needed addition to your forces and the thought actually raised your spirits a mite.

“An old memory Mason, am I to assume you brought them under my banner?”

“Near immediately Brynden. Gawen recognized the man, his horse was added to our stock of studs, unbelievable that he managed to keep it. He said he would wait to attend you when you returned, otherwise they have been about with the Sons to bolster our patrols and build relations. I had hoped you would approve.”

“Very Mason, I was right in entrusting you with Steadhold.”
>>
Matters of war, happens to be a lighter topic than you had expected, mostly numbers and stores and inventory, apparently you had a surplus of castleforged arms and armor and would be able to dole them out to your companies in the coming months. Mason would be handling this for the most part, but was preparing a list of what each unit would need the most for your approval. Otherwise there was a scarce discussion of what House Redward, Langward, and Blount were able to bring to bear, something that Lucas had not known until yet and he runs a hand through his hair with an unhappy smile.

“My brother commands a navy of five ships and 500 men my Lord. One of those ships and one hundred of those men are mine own, simple infantry, not unlike the ones you have just raised, but if I called upon them no doubt they would come. I would feel better for it as well. Those numbers are simply too imposing to not bolster our own.”

“Elsewise, we’ve more than enough volunteers Brynden,” Mason interjects, “At a moment’s notice we could have another levy of troops, green as gooseshit as they may be. And there is always Illiad with his brother, if he can get a workshop set up… We may have myrish crossbowmen on the walls before the year is out.”

“I would still feel better bringing my mine here,” Lucas says, a tense tone in his voice, “If not for you, for myself and my betrothed.”

ISIS winds up being the mastermind of her own kidnapping, which she orchestrated because she knew events were going to play out as she did and wanted to get ahead of the hammer coming down on our House.

SECRET THIRD OPTION
>Allow them, but ensure they arrive after the Tournament.

"Lucas, I understand the need for a man to feel safe. Call for your men, but do not have them arrive before the Tournament. We'll be safe until then, unless Redward is even more a fool than I thought. To attack me now is to provoke the households of all the gathered knights, to break the King's Peace on the eve of a wedding, and generally to stain his already blood-soaked hands."

This would be almost Frey-tier for the Redwards to attack. And remember, the Freys are so hated for what they did the Lannisters consider not paying their debts to them. People put them in fucking pies for it.

Not that Brynden knows any of that, but rather that the idea of it is insanely bloodthirsty.

>>
“I will allow it Lucas, send word to your brother that he may bring them when he travels to Steadhold for the Melee.”

“As you say my Lord. Thank you.”

“Nephew, if I may, a suggestion,” Dontos says after, having finally come back to reality, “We are beginning to accumulate more of an army rather than a guard. I’ve no doubt of your ability to lead, but let us be honest you are no Lord Randyll Tarly nor the crab Lord in the Westerlands. Perhaps if you’ve the time I may help you brush up on your warfare training, I could use it myself.”

“I will consider it Uncle, thank you,” you respond with a small nod, self improvement was hardly a poor idea in truth.

Benjin moves on to matters of your domains and lands, wealth now flowed into your coffers as quickly as you could spend it, but you were never particularly hard up for coin, all of your loan payments were timely, and the Bank of Bays was more than happy with your relationship. Otherwise trade of horse was still good, Gawen and his son had both finalized deals with the Crown, coin was coin afterall. In a year the Hayford’s herd would be viable on their own. Gawen had hit a bit of a snag with rebreeding your Rare Bloodline, not wanting to pollute the blood with incest he was looking for a few new mares to help expand the range.

Your Maester again pushes into the topic of recovering your smallfolk, the fields were attended to, but the more you pulled for your military might and expanded your production about the domains the thinner they had been spread out. You had not done the slightest in promoting growth of your population since your return and Benjin continued to harp upon the issue. Beyond that he spoke of continued improvement of Steadhold, more time and funds dedicated to the lower quarters would allow you to return her entirely to her old glory, the port being rebuilt would even be a possibility.
>>
>>44095961
>nor the crab Lord in the Westerlands.

>>
Mid talks of how your patrols had kept your populace in check and banditry at an absolute low you notice the door to the great hall creaking open and Solhas gingerly stepping in, attempting not to interrupt. But even this far you can read discontent on his face, something was wrong, he fidgeted with his bow the most whenever there was. Mason catches wind of your concern and excuses himself to speak with the Summer Islander. Their conversation is quick, typical of Solhas, but Mason’s confidence droops his, a hand placed on his shoulder and synced look your way begins to burn at you. Something was definitely wrong.

“Benjin, I understand the importance of the topic, but I have heard enough for today, next month, we will speak of it further, I swear.”

The Maester closes his book, “Of course my Lord,” and finishes with an annoyed tone.

You stand and give them leave to go about the rest of their days, Arron falls into step behind you, an odd feeling, but you cross to Mason and Solas quickly, your heart beginning to leap into your throat.

“Lord. Illiad has returned,” Solhas says quietly.

Your eyes alight, surely nothing could be wrong now, they did not wish to interrupt, nothing, nothing, nothing-

“There is some… Grave news. I think it best he tell you, I will gather the Maester, he will need him.”

Mason gives you a look and Solhas attempts to stay stone faced, so you run, Mason keeping the young Qorgyle behind. Likely he was in Benjin’s ward, you take the steps by two, nearly running over a servant carrying a package of bloody rags. Your eyes widen and your pace quickens, the room is in sight, the door left ajar. You stop, hand hovering over the knob, the sobs of a woman, a man in pain, myrish words of voices you did not know. Pushing in with ease you are given a round of looks from all.

“Yanno?”

“Brynden. Good to see you again. I wish it had been under better circumstances.

Your eyes skip from the dothraki you had known long ago to the man on the bed, rolling in pain, Illiad. To his side a young man that looked near his double, praying in a tongue you did not know.

“Yanno- What… Asher, Sallo Rhod, where are they?”

He frowns, deeply, and looks to Illiad, “Best he tell you. Careful he’s been in and out of consciousness since we got here, took a bad wound to the leg, festered on the trip home. I… I don’t know if…”

You push towards the bed, taking a stool across from no doubt his younger brother, the look he gives you giving it away instantly, Illiad’s head turns to you, eyes drooping, “Lord…”

“Illiad...” you feel the sting in the corner of your eyes, what in the seven hells happened.

“I was… Dishonest, Lord. Illion was… Not for sale. I-I stole him. Like you did me… I am…” his eyes close again, broken common tongue falling out over and over, ‘I am. I am. I am.’

His eyes roll back and he groans in pain again, Benjin finally arrives his eyes wide with a sudden look of horror at the beaten man on his table, he pushes you aside and begins work on the festered wound, gathering milk of the poopy and ordering his assistant about. You stand back, Yanno coming to your side, cringing to another groan of pain from Illiad, “I can… Fill in the blanks Brynden.”

Time to display at least a little intelligence.

"I suppose from his wounds, and the lie, that Asher and Sallo didn't make it back?"

Over time, get the whole story from him.

Here's a question: We've just discovered that Illiad lied to us, like Arryn and several others. How do we handle this? Certainly, his loyalty to us buys him MORE judicious treatment, but how much more?

The Septon is the least of our worries, its his aids and knights who are lannisters that will come back to haunt us.

Frankly so long as they never enter the castle, and all the servants are seen in groups when they go to see the septopn (and the knights are restricted from contacting our servants) then we can cut any actual spying down to random peasent in a bar level.

When Obella gets here and starts setting shit up is when we have a known ear to our affairs that can be fed what ever we want and used to our advantage should we need it.
>>
>>44096163
Arryn and others never had our backs in our sellsword days.

You pull Yanno outside the door, and close it to another cry of pain, “Did you help him Yanno?”

“Yes Brynden.”

“Where.”

“In Myr, he didn’t lie about that. Just the… Events.”

“Asher, Sallo..?”

“Dead. The latter… Betrayed them, us rather.”

Your face turns stark white, you had lost two of the Sons, and a third now lie groaning in pain hardly able to give you a word in between spouts of consciousness. What in the bloody Seven Hells happened over there, it was suppose to be a simple thing, purchase his brother return home. Why would he lie to you? Did he not trust you? So many questions, Benjin needed to do his work, save your dear friend. If only so you could hide him for being so incredibly stupid.

“Who?”

“An old acquaintance, Tychano Osten. The same magister prick that you sprung him from the first time.”

“Magister?”

“Well not quite…” Yanno’s voice trails off in your ear and your mind turns to Dorne again. The slaves that had been sent to take your life, their words suddenly made sense. The timing as well. But how had they known where you were? So quickly coming to Westeros, ahead of Illiad even. Your stomach churned, but in your eyes burnt fire. Hot, unbridled fire. You were furious with Illiad, he should have known better, you would have helped him regardless, but more so that across the Sea ghosts of your past still dared linger. Osten had more of a history with you than you would rather admit, but this was too damn far.
>>
Remember people. It is not gay if it is Illad.
>>
Yanno attempts to answer whatever questions still linger, but they are disjointed, he did not know the full story, Illion did not speak the common tongue and Erlera knew even less. So you waited. Long into the evening, you refused meal, instead standing in the doorway, watching Benjin work, he took deep cuts into Illiad’s leg. Shaking his head several times, and attempting to gain a better angle on the infection. Illion sat in a chair by the window watching, hands folded in pray, his eyes catch yours from time to time. But always darted away. Illiad’s groans turn to low moans as the poppy does its job, his eyes half lidded in sleep. After awhile Benjin casts is instruments aside and pushes away in frustration.

“My Lord. I cannot save the leg.”

You stand quiet, “Can you save him?”

“Yes. But it will not be easy.”

“Do it.”

“Are you sur-”

“Do it Benjin.”

He sighs deeply, and brushes the hair in his eyes away leaving a smear of blood on his cheek, “I will need your help, belts, strap him down. And hold the one in his mouth. Will, get the saw.”

Your movements feel like you’re pushing through a sea of honey, but far less sweet, Illiad remains under while you strap him in, pushing his wrists to his side and linking them to the table. A fan strap goes in his mouth, and you stand behind it, head hardly an inch away from his. Your eyes still stung, but the fire burned away any tear that may escape. You could feel your hands shaking, and Benjin looks to you for reaffirmation, receiving a sharp nod.

The first cut is the worst of it, even milk of the poppy doesn’t keep Illiad under entirely, his eyes widen, locking with yours, he strains against the straps and you push down, attempting to muffle his scream of pain. Benjn saws away with a diligent hand, as quickly as he dare, pushing away flesh and the rot about it. The lower leg is green with rot and the smell burns your nose.

Illiad shakes his head, wishing to be free and you force him down further, “I’m sorry Illiad. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” The tears come easy now, your forehead meeting his, and he stops moving, only sobbing in pain the screams of pain caught in his throat.

---

Your clothing was soiled with the blood of one of your oldest friends, they were tossed aside, unwanted, and you sat naked in the tub in your room, attempting to wash the anger from your mind. But it lingered, as did the pain of having to do that to Illiad. You even were angry with yourself, you should have known better, Asher and Sallo weren’t enough but… Sallo, why would he betray you?

Sinking into the tub further you close your eyes and allow thoughts to drift. There were still expectations of you. You needed be a Lord. And with that came self improvement, anything to turn your mind from the horror you just witnessed.

>You have 40 EXP to spend. The related chart is where you can allocate it.
30 will give you a rank in a skill
10 will give you a speciality rank.
50 will give you a Destiny Point if you want to sit on it
>>
>>44096662
Lets put it into Swords and Warfare.
>>
>>44096662
An extra rank in Warfare would be good, and a specialty dice in Charm?
>>
>>44096662
Does Illiad get a DP for picking up the Maimed flaw?
>>
>>44096662
Need to get Warfare, charm or convince for the other.
>>
>tortured
>almost lost his tongue
>lost his mother fucking leg

Dad why do you hate Illiad?
>>
>>44096662
How many destiny points does Bryn have at the moment?
>>
>>44096662
One in Warfare
>>
>>44096662

>wanted to abscond with Illiad before all this
>now he triggers my amputee fetish, too

Fuck Westeros let's elope to the Summer Isles with best one-legged husbando.

>Warfare
>>
>>44096662
So, Victus will travel to Essos to hunt for the fuckers who maimed his dad's Broamour?
>>
>>44096704
Huh. I guess he should. Good call.

>>44096718
Illiad is one of my favorite characters. I only hurt him because I love him.

>>44096730
Right now? None. The only one we ever had free was used to get the dragonbone.

>>44096737
Wow. That sure is a response I didn't expect.

Moving swiftly on. Looks like Warfare is the clear winner. King of scattered on if we want to use the extra 10 EXP on anything. Maybe just sit on it for now?
>>
>>44096801
I'd say upgrade either sword or if possible Bow
>>
>>44096801
No martial upgrades.

>Charm or sit on it
>>
>>44096801

Maybe Bow, seeing as we're going to get that specialty Dragonbone bow made for us now. Right, guys?

...right?
>>
>>44096718
I suddenly remembered Illiad's fear of being bound. What a fucking nightmare he just had to endure.
>>
>>44096801
Since its a grab bag, sword or bow.

Bow would be best since we will (sometime soon) start the dragon bone bow quest line.
>>
>>44096801
Sit on it for now. Id prefer getting a destiny point next as we don't have any to help out if we fuck up an important as hell roll.
>>
Charm
>>
I would like to get more into bow to become a real beast in it

Or swords since there is a chance we can actually settle things with Redward with a duel
>>
>>44096858

We fuck up every roll, anon.

Unless we're in an archery contest.
>>
>>44096843
>>44096829
We're a decent enough fighter: if we get a Bad End it's going to be because an army came to sack Steadhold and it won't matter how good we are with a sword. We need Persuasion or Warfare skills.
>>
>>44096801
Sit on the exp
>>
>>44096845
Yeah... That wasn't fun for anyone involved.

Alright looks like we can do a little vote for this.

Spend EXP on?
>Bows
>Charm
>Nothing, sit on it
>>
>>44096908

We just blew 30 xp on Warfare.

So far archery has gotten us more wealth, infamy and success than any other stat.
>>
>>44096925
>Bows
>>
>>44096925
>>Nothing, sit on it
>>
>>44096858
50 xp is too much for a DP though: we'd be better off picking up a flaw. Possibly Haunted after this traumatic display.
>>
>>44096925
>Bows
>>
Wait. What compititions are there going to be at the Tourny of Highgarden ?

I kow there is a Joust but will there be a melee or archery ?
>>
>>44096925
Charm
>>
>>44096925
>Charm or sit on it.

I'm a fan of 30 xp ranks in the best of 3 system.
>>
>>44096925
>Nothing, sit on it
We need wait and look at the long term when spending exp
>>
>>44096925
>Charm
While i want to do bow again, charm will give us more bang for our buck.

Unless the highgarden tourney has archer, then bow.
>>
>>44096928
Which is why we're good enough at it.
>>
>>44096925
>Charm
>>
>>44096925

Bows.
>>
>>44096801
Oh we already paid a DP for the Dragonbone? I thought you were gonna force us to use one to get it. That's why I've been unenthusiastic about it personally.
>>
>>44096947
Just jousting, since it's the Reach and they're all about that chivalry son. So yeah Brynden can compete in that.

>>44096938
Wait for months for your best friend to come home, the first thing you see is him dying and then you have to hold him down to cut off his god damn leg. That's a possibility.
>>
Bow or sit on it
>>
>>44097014
For the roll, yes. It was to get all three stages of that roll.

I don't intend on making you guys spend a DP on Heirloom, that's dumb. Just Wealth.
>>
>>44097015
Jesus. As if we weren't already enough of a pulp novel MC, now we're haunted by our tragic past?
>>
>>44097015

Is it really reasonable to think that in all his years serving as a sellsword Brynden didn't see his fair share of battlefield amputations? I know Illiad's a god-tier bro, but that seems like a difficult assumption to operate on.
>>
Alright, that's a tie right now. Let's go with sit on it, since that seemed popular enough and we always have later.

>>44097065
Oh no he's definitely seen worse, way worse. It's just the person really. But I probably wouldn't allow it just because while the experience was traumatic, it's not on the level of some things I have planned.
>>
>>44097091
> level of some things I have planned.
Well Fuck.
>>
>>44097091
>it's not on the level of some things I have planned.

Death of Victus confirmed.
>>
>>44097091
>it's not on the level of some things I have planned.

If you touch a head on Victus' head I swear to god dad.
>>
>>44097065
It's probably the 1st one that he had to participate, and one that struck someone he'd call brother at that
>>
>>44097127
Merc companys. Near enough everyone is your brother over time, cant really afford not to be.

Unless your a psychotic asshole.
>>
So now we have to find two more members of the Sons of Gold? Fuck me man.
>>
>>44097091
>it's not on the level of some things I have planned.
Awww come on dad I know we have been killing it with wealth rolls but the foreboding is going to kill us
>>
>>44097159
Brynden is gonna need a whore for this and Illad is not even avaliable!
>>
>>44097113

The butthurt would reach critical mass and turn into an all-out riot.

And for once, anon would be justified in his rage.
>>
>>44097113
>>44097126
I genuinely don't think I could ever kill Victus. Unless it was a rolling thing later on when he becomes his own man and we get to do his perspectives.
>>
>>44097209
Lies.
We know you plan on putting in twists to fuck with your players.
We are wiseing up.
>>
>>44097209

Anon doesn't allow character development.

We would play grown man Victus as an eight-year old boy.
>>
Illiad is out for the next few days, between bouts of spurting half conscious pain and forcing down food and water and the deep sleep of poppy he is of little use to answer the questions bouncing in your head. At least you had a name. Tychano Osten, hardly one you could forget, there was far more than enough revenge for you to gain in Westeros, but there was a focused line of hatred directed in the general way of Myr right now. You’ve been distracting yourself with small things until Dontos’ words echoed in your head again, perhaps it would be best to brush up on your warfare skills again, you could command a company of freeriders, but an army? That was something else entirely. Dontos seemed happy for the company of late, not entirely sure what to do with himself in the lead up to the Melee. It wasn’t his competition in truth, and he had little stack, so instead he secluded himself away in the castle, leery of the new Septon as well.

The side room of your Uncle’s bedroom was occupied with a large table and more than a few markers used to represent the various military units your family had used past and present. It was a simple war game, one he enjoyed playing with his sponsor many years ago if your memory served. Victus and Arron had come along as well to watch, but the topic of your desire today was far more delicate than you could speak to around children.

Dontos moves his infantry and pikemen into place before his castle, and you look over your army of cavalry and archers, thinking over your first move.

“Dontos, we need to talk,” you say broaching the subject as well as you can muster at the moment.

“We are nephew. Your move.”

“No. Dontos. Of something… Serious.”
>>
He casts his eyes from the board and into yours, “Of what, your betrothal? What is there to speak of, the decision is made. It is a good match.”

Your lips form a flat line, better that than disdain for Obella, at least he was not angry you made the decision without him, but your mind turns to the many other things of Dorne, “No. Uncle… Something far more important. About… The family. Isis.”

Now it is his turn for quiet, and flat looks, “I would rather not Brynden… I was drunk, I misspoke-”

“Shes alive Dontos.”

“And I- What?”

“She’s alive. In… Redward’s hold. She’s… pregnant.”

His dark eyes have locked yours, watching, searching, wishing you were lying, “No. Brynden. Who..?”

“The Hand of the King, he told me. While we were gone… The Crown married her to Royce Redward, and they kept it from us. To keep us in line. But when the stories didn’t match… I start asking questions.”

Your Uncle’s fingers had been lingering over a game piece for a moment, before his legs finally give out and he flops to the chair behind him. Eyes no longer upon yours, but rather in the distance, to the southwest, “I… I still failed her.”

“But she’s alive Dontos.”

“With a bastard’s seed in her belly,” you can hear the heat in his voice.

“We will deal with it when we-”

“What? Free her? From a marriage sanctioned by the Crown? How Brynden, they always acted as if we were trapped, I thought it because of you but no… She was their hostage. All along they… They bloody knew.”

“I do not know yet Dontos. But… We will. She’ll be here in Steadhold. Somehow. I promise you.”

Dontos stares at you, long and hard, if he had your eyes they would be aflame at this moment, but instead the heat seeped into his words, his hatred for a man that only knew equal to your own, “Do not break that vow.”

The beginning of the month comes and you find yourself again at the head of your House managing her actions. The decisions that need be made. You need find men to replace Sallo, Asher and Illiad, at least Yanno had volunteered. And you need make the final pushes into the Melee to provide the best you possibly could for your guests. There was a statement to be made here. And you intended to make it.
