The basic idea: a fantasy world in which "illusion" is the only type of magic. Illusions can affect the senses, but do not have physical presence nor can they directly affect thoughts, feelings or memories.

Fairies are considered to the be the most powerful magicians in the world, as they are the only one considered able to truly manipulate reality. In fact, fairies are the "descendants" of the Dreaming Empire, a mythological civilization which has supposedly vanished without a trace when its people "journeyed into another world." What happened is that the people of the Dreaming Empire became so good at illusions that they eventually CREATED the faerie realm as the ultimate entertainment system - a glamorous, eternal world where they could experience any pleasure. They all died from thirst while hooked up to the faerie realm, a giant, magical, super addictive VRMMOG. It is an entire illusory reality, which explains why the fairies, who are themselves illusory beings with illusory intellects (explaining their sometimes weird behavior) seem to be capable of truly affecting it.

The dwarfs, who have evolved underground, are less reliant on their eyesight then humans, perceiving the world instead through a combination of all their senses. As a result, illusions are far less effective on them and they are wary and often hateful of fairies. Being brought to the faerie realm is torturous on their brains.

Bumping for a good idea, since I don't really have anything to contribute.

Really, what's there left to do? It's a good setting, could be used with most systems, but there's not much left to develop.
>>
>>44087783
What about all the actual details? Places? People? Organizations? The stuff that makes a setting a setting? Let's begin pouring in the ideas...

Seems to me like the main thing left to expand on would be how the new cultures use illusions in various ways, and exactly what sorts of effects can fall under Illusion.

For example, can you create Illusory torches that give off light? That would be a major boon to most cities, even if they had to remain stationary to work.
>>
>>44087812
If you light an illusory torch, and the light is illusory, wouldn't that also mean that it couldn't reveal anything real? I mean, say you're in a dark room. You make an illusory light. Wouldn't you only be able to see an empty room? Or a room filled with whatever you want, for that matter. You're only making it SEEM illuminated. You're not actually revealing things in the room.

Mindfuck there.

Where's that pic from?

Give it up, pal. Some ideas weren't made to spread wings.

Sad, final bump.

I will steal this idea for a magic cursed item

Bump for the bizarre ideas with illusion.

Well, something that might grow in popularity would be illusory clothing. Perhaps not in place of normal clothes, but instead as a way to supplement them and alter them as fashion suits.

Why pay a tailor to make you an expensive dress you'll only wear once when you can have an illusionist weave a glamour over an existing one?
>>
>>44088590
It's simpler if you think about it as the illusion not really being of LIGHT, but of an ILLUMINATED ROOM (which or might not look like the room really would've been if illuminated). The light's just a prop within that.
>>
>>44088590
I would interpret it as the light illuminating what you know. If you light it in your room in the dark, it illuminates your room perfectly. However, if you try to use it to explore a dungeon, everything around you will look like just a vast expanse of flat ground going into the darkness. Maybe you take one step and suddenly fall into a hole that was invisible to you up until then, maybe you stumble facefirst into a wall.

It could make for some creative uses. For example, someone who had a secret base behind a labyrinth or a series of tunnels could use torches like that to light the way. He would see the path clearly and know how to advance, but anyone who hadn't been there before would just constantly fall into traps and walk into walls. Also, he could bring people to his hideout without them learning how to reach it.

>>44093830
Seems kind of odd. What happens if there's another person in the room with you? Can you not see eachother at all? Do they suddenly appear once they make their presence known? What if you don't know what they look like?

It really feels like creating a light should be simpler than creating some weird 'see what you expect to see' effect.
>>
>>44093945
Easy. If the person enters that room knowing beforehand you're in it, that person can see you. Same if entering with you. If not, you're invisible to them until you talk or touch them.
>>
>>44093945
Read >>44093687 you're not actually creating a light at all, you're creating the illusion of an illuminated room.
>>
>>44093619
This is a really cool idea. Magic might not be common enough to justify it, but it could be a fad among wizards themselves. Or noble wizards.
>>
>>44096538
Or Nobles who have Wizards working for them.

How would Divine magic work in this world? Presumably it would still be illusions, but would they have a different focus on effects?
