Apparently this is going to be a flop, but it still makes me want to play an RPG focused around whaling. Or just being on a ship in general I guess, but hopefully whaling. Are there any systems that can make a good game of this? The setting doesn't seem to be able to carry the same feel as most RPGs.

>this is going to flop

Isn't that the Moby Dick movie? You're going to see it and fucking like it, this is the movie of The Great American Novel. Ergo, it will be the Great American Film.
>>
>>44081553
Reviews are saying it's just kind of boring and predictable, but I hope to like it. Moby Dick is amazing. Makes me want to whale in an RPG
>>
>>44081553
No, it's the 'real' incident that inspired Moby Dick. Take that as you will, I take it to mean it won't be anywhere near as good.

It's going to flop.

The idea of an RPG solely about whaling is perhaps a bit optimistic. Is there one that allows you to play a crew on a ship at least? Whaling could be a side adventure

7th sea?

>>44080818
GURPS low tech has some pretty nice stuff for sailing.
>>
>>44083878
Period movies shot on the ocean almost never make their money back. Pirates of the Carribean is the one exception to this rule. It costs a ton just to get the ships out there, never mind renting them or buying them, setting them up with cameras, the constant retakes, waiting for the right weather, etc. That's partly why Master And Commander flopped.

Whaling was the systematic murder of billions of sentient cetacean beings. I was going to go with Genocide but I figured most people don't know what that means so the easiest parallel that most people will instantly understand is The Holocaust.

Seven Seas? I hear bad things about it. And there's Rogue Trader, which you can homebrew into blue-water navy shit.

The true tale blah blah blah), they forget that half of the fucking book was comedic satire with the author poking fun at MAN VERSUS NATURE I SURVIVED THE WILDS narratives complete with utterly innacurrate descriptions of real whales and whaling and tons of homosexual subtext

While I wouldn't call it murder, whaling is still unbelievably stupid. What the hell does anybody that isn't living in the Arctic Circle need whale for?

The Japanese catch a shit ton of them yet nobody wants the meat for anything.
>>
>>44088407
Kek. You almost had me with that whale sized bait.
>>
>>44080818
OP, sailor here. I hate to burst your fun bubble but sailing is mostly very very boring. 70% of the time you either cook, clean, steer or sleep. If your capitan happens to be a bro or you have the right papers you might be on navigation duty, which in turn is mostly basic math and drawing straight lines
>>
>>44088899
Being locked in a metal box for yonks really does a good job of making math interesting.
>>
>>44088910
you dont know the half of it mate, allthough i mainly play chess and read in my free time on a ship
>>
The Japanese want to go whaling because no matter what we do, the ocean is going to have a massive amount of extinctions in our lifetime. Whales, Sharks, coral, etc are all going to be gone as the oceans heat the fuck up and kill the food chain. It's inevitable and irresponsible
>>
>>44083907

Nah, you burn whale oil, remember Dishonoured?
>>
>>44091348
Man, Dishonored and Black Flag are like the only two ways to explore whaling in games. Maybe 7th Sea

Do any traditional RPGs allow for boating? I know Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd edition at least has rules for crewing a ship.
>>
>>44087846
>billions
>figured people didn't know what genocide meant
this is some next-level bait
>>
>>44099295
I think you're looking at this the wrong way.

You don't want a system that has tons of rules regarding the operation and maintenance of a boat. The fun you're looking for is entirely in the way you run the game. This means you want a system that encompasses things like MANLY MEN KILLING ANIMALS. Otherwise you end up with something like

>Make your boating roll
>I fail
>The boat sinks
>>
>>44088370
to be fair, whales and elephants are currently the top contenders for human-level or near-human-level sapience.

I'd rather play a Master & Commander game.
>>
>>44099736
Interesting point. Hmm.

Okay, in light of that, can anyone think of activities that can take place on a ship? Being stuck at sea for session after session kind of confines the playing area to a small space.
>>

That'd work too. Which system would you use?

That's not entirely true though. If you made a >>44100841, you'd probably only make rolls or knowledge checks when you're doing something with the boat, like trying to tack properly or figure out where you're actually sailing without the aid of a clock.
