>"I search for secret doors"
>(Successful roll, whether in secret or not)
>"You find nothing" (because there are no secret doors here)

Players love to look for secret doors, and obviously often there are plenty to be found, but the above scenario is - at least for me - common as all hell. And it gets boring really fast.

Instead of any nonexistent secret doors, what else could a player character find? What else is hidden behind the dungeon cobwebs, the ancient bookshelves, and the many bones of creatures that died long ago?

You find an ancient dwarven gold coin behind a bookcase!
Unfortunately the mint that made this coin was incredibly prolific and it's worth around only one and half gold, due to how common they are among numismatists. Someone probably just dropped it and it rolled there.

You find an old wine bottle, empty and long abandoned. However, on the hand written label is some absent minded writing about magic. It might be worth something to a magician.

A glossy black rat-sized spider glares at you from it's perch in the corner between ceiling and wall.
It's eyes glisten with uncommon intelligence as it watches you and the party.
It's Awakened and an ancient long-dead druid's companion. Cautiously neutral to the party, it nonetheless knows secrets about the dungeon that they can persuade out of it. A spellcaster might be able to take it as a familiar and leave the dungeon with it, along with it's historical knowledge... If they win it's favour and interest.

Old news papers, bees, chicken bones that might've been held together by some old home made ward against spirits. Just google search for junk people randomly find in their house walls.

A surprisingly large amount of shit in corners and alcoves that aren't in direct view.

Bits of paper and string and the occasional torn scrap of cloth.

Shards of metal underneath gouges and chips in the walls and doors.

Corpses of prior explorers, long since picked clean.

The floor shows signs of repeated ritual circles being drawn and redrawn for various use. Ypu can only guess as to the nature of the magic spcast here.
Unfortunately the majority of magical components seems to have fallen into dust or uselessness. You find a pot of flame dust on one point of the circle though that appears to have been preserved however. A wizard or magical supplies shop would probably take it off your hands for a few coins.

You notice after some time investigating the room, that your shadows are missing. It is not due to lighting, as the furniture retains them.

In Donjon, if you roll a success while looking for secret doors, you WILL find a secret door WHETHER OR NOT there was supposed to be one there in the first place.

Not a fan of Donjon, then?

>A secret door! No, wait, it's literally just a hidden door that opens outward to reveal a blank rock face
>A secret door! It opens to reveal it was a broom closet.
>A secret alcove! All that's left is molded cheese long since turned to dust
>A secret cranny! It contains a child's treasure trove; a dozen conkers, ancient candy, a hoop and a stick.
>A secret floor tile! Beneath lies a tome on the uses of mandragora in cooking. Could be worth a bit to a chef?
>A sense of absolute knowledge seeps into you; there is no secret door within this room. This knowledge is deeply comforting.

Or you could allow them to make a singular roll at the end of the dungeon to be considered a dungeon wide check. Or allow them to take twenty, and make that twenty days of in game time. As long as they have that much time to spare, or if they come out to find the land ravaged by a villain in their lengthy absence, or they run low on supplies.

Indifferent. Just pointing out thtpat finding a hidden door may be useless.
...actually..

>you find a hidden door! It leads into a seating area behind the walls
>from here, you can see the room you were not too long ago locked in combat within through peepholes
>empty and crumpled food containers litter the floor
>some of them are still warm
>has... has somebody been watching you fight? How much of this place has viewing galleries, and where did your unseen watchers go?

You found a door on the west wall. It is large and grand, made of gold and ornamented with sculptings of dragons. It is at least ten feet tall, and is bordered by gold and jade. Would you like to open it?
>yes
On the other side of the door, you find a nondescript brick wall. The door was just for show.
>>
>>44055753
>we take the door
The gold is just for show. It's illusionary and reveals it's true nature as you touch the door and feel the wood beneath
>we take the door anyway, it looks baller af

>[Severus]: “Successus, a weaver, loves the innkeeper’s slave girl named Iris. She, however, does not love him. Still, he begs her to have pity on him. His rival wrote this. Goodbye.”.
>[Answer by Successus]: “Envious one, why do you get in the way. Submit to a handsomer man and one who is being treated very wrongly and good looking.”
>[Answer by Severus]: “I have spoken. I have written all there is to say. You love Iris, but she does not love you.”

>Success: You find that one of the tiles in this room is loose. When removed, you see that it reveals a single square hole, about 6 inches in width. You cannot see the bottom.
>>
>You stroke, poke, fondle, or at the very least look at every single nook and cranny in the room, until you finally find a special spot
>It does not open a secret door at all
>A few weeks later, you are delivered a letter of summons to the court for sexual harrassment

>A painting, possibly of the local area, that is welldrawn and appealing but not worth an extraordinary amount
>A skeleton of something
>A woodcarving of anything, like a man riding a goat
>An erotic woodcarving
>A book about anything
>A bird's nest or birds' nests, maybe of a rare bird.
>An insect nest or beehive
>some or a lot of small spiders (possibly in a colour that isn't black, grey or brown)
>a huge amount of bird shit
>anything perishable gone rotten
>A stock of biscuits, still edible that taste alright
>any stock of edible food
>a broken swordhilt
>one or more roosting birds
>one or a few of the setting's small, low-level wildlife and / or monsters
>A small wooden box, empty
>Paper with a piece of text laid out like a poem
>A lantern, may or may not work
>A folded paper glider - a "paper aeroplane"

>you find an hidden souvenir shop of the dungeon, full of useless if flashy trinkets for sale made out cheap materials.

>after concentrating so long on the room, your hand touches something unusual: you touch the hand of a wandering monster that dropped its glasses. roll to see if it's love at first sight.
