THIS IS NOT A CIV GAME, IT IS A GENERAL.

This is a thread created for the discussion of civilization quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QMs.

Currently running:

>>
I personally love civ games. How do qm's manage random events?
>>
How come Civ games never last?

There was a great Cyclops civ with an overarching plot a while back that suddenly disappeared. I'd love to take it all the way with a race from tribal stone age to space/cosmic age.
>>
>>44024575
The OP got bored with it I think and recently came back talking about how they're making a CYOA Dungeon Builder game

But I know what you mean, that was the pinnacle of Civ Quests
>>
>>44024575
Do Qm's generally have a preplanned enough world where major events could hammer outside of the primary civilization?
>>
>>44024575
Occasionally there are some that do last, those QM's usually have a small following of niche players as determined as they are to keep playing.

Their quest do tend to be older, and so harder for newbies to get in or stay interested.
>>
>>44024575
>How come Civ games never last?
It is a disposable genre and the audience is fickle.

Not that I've noticed, sadly.

btw, thanks for posting one of the actual Civ charts

Yeah but that cant be that /tg/ is the only and biggest board to play these kind of games. The really aren't any other platforms where not only civ-games but also others take place?
It's hard to believe..

I mean there's /b/, that's where this shit got started, but as for the internet as a whole reddit has a subreddit for civilization games IIRC.
>>
Odd question:

Would anyone be interested in gijinka races?
>>
>>44027105
Probably would be an audience for it
>>
>>44027127
Sweet. :)
>>
>>44027105
So long as it stays away from furry territory then maybe
>>
>>44027372
It will probably be more similar to magical girls.
>>
Why civ games gotta be dead tho?
>>
>>44027493
I think the people on /tg/ prefere other forms of games, not the civ
>>
>>44027508

Piss off with your faggy meme civs, no one will ever play them. Not even ironically.

>>44027579

They were popular as hell for a while, I think part of it was adding in too many options which makes it hard for people to agree on something to play as.

Is anyone here from back when I used yo have a Lizardfolk thread going on? It started from /b and the migrated over here... Thinking about starting to do civ threads again but I am not sure
>>
>>44027637
True. I just report him anytime I see him posting. Maybe someday it'll stick.

If I wasn't so busy with other quests I'd give another shot at running a Civ quest.

>>44027677
The only Lizard civ I remember was by a guy named SlowCM.

Either way, give it a shot.

Civ threads used to be posted all the fucking time on /b/ awhile ago and it's actually what got me into /tg/. After awhile they just kind of stopped showing up there. Since /tg/ Isn't interested in civ threads (or they move at a snail's pace) maybe we could start posting Vic threads on /b/? I know that /b/ is cancerous nowadays but I really love playing civ threads. Is there any reason that we stopped doing this other than boredom? If not than starting to do so would probably be a good idea.
>>
>>44028741
Link us there if you like.
>>
>>44028768
I can't run civs. I don't have enough free time to organize all of the posts into an archive, think up of new and interesting ideas, and stay in a thread for hours on end. I have enough free time to pop into a civ thread off and on for about 1-2 hours each day. I could never deal with having to disappoint people just because I had to write a paper for college. The number 1 reason why I'm not running one is because I don't have a computer
>>
>>44028672

Just a heads up, I'm planning on starting a Dwarf/Boreal Islands civ tomorrow.
>>
Someone in /b/ just asked for civilization start up tips. Thread died before I hit enter. Let me know if this is on point, or counter productive.

I generally draw out a quick continent. Make a list of various races which are on the continent. And figure out the typographical regions and the time period. Time period influences the major civilizations reliance and advancement on tech and magic. Looking back at races and regions I then place 5 major races(or race groups) into kingdoms. I decide on some general thoughts or themes in these places(ex. Gnome territory is actually a prized place to go. If you live a great life you are invited in this southern peninsula. Gnomes are trying to build a utopia. They manage wealth for many countries, and remain neutral. ) If I want to get detailed at this point I make 1-3 cities per race depending on their stats. Remember the more advanced the world the more likely kingdoms include multiple races and are not tribal based. I also draw out country lines at this point. Next I write out 15 - 20 random events which could happen to multiple races. Any thing from hurricane to wars starting. Even localized events are good too. They often affect other places. It is good to mentally go over history which effects culture and landscape, as well as any major dieties/religions/cults at this point because they often effect game play. Potentially make notes of what the upper level and lowest level of game play looks like. Ex. Magic at its peak could create a second moon or cast eternal sleep or form a utopia.

When the players choose a race you will be able to add more random events and think about initial reactions of other groups. Start with a small newly formed group so the player feels empowered. Always think in terms of cause and effect. Players are the cause, but how does the world you made respond in an understandable manner. Remember, players don't need all the facts, but an informed QM is normally celebrated.
>>
My question for anyone out there deals with pacing and improvement. How many posts should building and research take? Should posts be days, weeks, years, decades? And then how quickly do you upgrade magic and tech, or increase population?

I want to hear opinions, I realize there are liky few hard facts.
>>
>>44034932
It depends on the game but I think posts should at least be a month apart, unless there's some kind of immediate action at hand. Nothing on the level of construction, research, population growth, or the like will change dramatically over a few days or weeks.

Personally I think the length of season, or 3 months, is appropriate for one strategic turn.
>>
>>44034932
Turns are based on the magic of indeterminate periods of time. Don't get caught in a specific time scale. Sometimes it's a day, sometimes it's a month, sometimes it's years. Let the context of the description decide on its own.
>>
>>44035243
Yeah, that makes sense, but then for your human offspring to reach 15 So they are useful you need to have 75 turns if each turn is a season. I guess it would depend on the planned longevity of the game though.

>>44035577
That makes good sense, let it bend some to the situation instead of a hard rule.
>>
>>44035707
What's more, maybe don't count children in the statistic. Just when they pop into adults. Would help further.
>>

Hey guys, I just saw that people were asking for resources on their civs.

So here is a quick reminder (and shameless self promotion) that long ago I made 45 Civ cards for random event generation or player interaction for all of you wonderful CMs to use. I dunno if anyone ever used them but maybe you will be able to. They key thing is that they are kept vague and thus their effects can be freely interpreted based on the situation.

Also coming with card draw images for immersion purposes
