Basically he was born in a city and worked his way into service of a noble household, and has a forbidden relationship with the lady of the house after her father passed away. He's trying to make himself a desirable marriage partner and climb the ranks. He also tried and suppresses his sadism and general negative personality traits as he recognizes they are counter productive to his goals.
