What's the fastest way to signal to a potential mate that you're a traditional gamer?
>>
>>44007655
With words.

If you go in too heavy with geek paraphernalia you stop being a potential mate.
>>
>>44007655
Just ask them if they like /tg/-related stuff. If they say yes, good for you. If not, you can move on and look for someone else.

If you're afraid of asking, then you don't want this hypothetical "potential mate" that's into /tg/-related things, you want a specific person and you're hoping that they aren't scared off by your hobby.

Depending on definition of "crit". In Shadowrun any time you exceed threshold/opposite roll by more then 4 successes it's considered as sort of crit, but it doesn't automatically lead to any bonuses.
In gurps you auto hit at 3-4 as far as I know, even on opposed check.

Casually say something like "my friends and I play D&D sometimes" and don't be a total dweeb about it.

>inb4 but I don't play D&D

Most people know what "D&D" is and it'll give them the general idea without warranting much of an explanation. Which is good, because if you have to explain you're groups last game of Lasers and Feelings then you've fucked it up.

Somewhat related - I married a girl with no interest in /tg/ related stuff. Ive tried to pique her interest, and shes given it a few tries. She isnt against it, and doesnt look down on it or anything - just not into it.
She does have a 10/10 body and a 8/10 face, and we have just about everything else in common - but /tg/ stuff is such a big part of me, it still sucks.

We've been together 14 years, married for 10. My advice is to gauge a potential partners (dis)interest in /tg/ stuff - and weigh it against how important it isto you. It doesnt have to be a do or die situation. Good luck op.

See, I feel like most people would be much more interested in something like Lasers and Feelings or maybe Big Motherfuckin Crab Truckers than D&D, because D&D has a stigma and is complicated, whereas those others are simple and funny.

Simple and funny is definitely the kind of game you want to start people out on. Everyone is John will usually go over fine at a party or get-together, something like CoC or DnD, not so much.

Not him, but I hate T-shirts and I think the last time I wore one was just because I wanted a quick shirt to pack in a backpack for an overnight trip.

A good 80-90% of my wardrobe consists of linen and seersucker pants and shorts, paired with silk or linen button-down shirts.
>>
>>44025215
Not him but I'm equally autistic and fuck graphic T-shirts.

Maybe some band or product T-shirts work as an ice breaker or you're proud to be a fan of something. But that seems pretty rare and it isn't saying anything, it's not a form of self-expression beyond, "I like this band, okay?"

The everyday graphic T-shirts are the worst though. What the hell is "Tokyo Laundry"? What is "Hype"? Have you been to Amsterdam or Miami, or do you just like white T-shirts with Instagram-filter photographs and captions of those cities?

The Rolling Stones lick, Dark Side of the Moon cover, and Northern Soul get a special commendation for being somewhere between these two.

At the end of the day, why not just buy plain shirts?

Saying you like d&d when you dont to show you like rpg
would be the equivalent of saying you like david guetta to show you like electronic music.
>>

Nope if they are patricians that dont play d&d

>>
>>44037478
No, it wouldn't.

See, I don't know who David Guetta is. You could literally just say "I'm into electronic music" and I'd understand you better.

This is the opposite case with ttRPGs.
>>
>>44037610
indeed
>>
>>44037610
I use the line "I like RPGs, kinda similar to DnD."

Still, it took ... 4 dates (not actual dates) to explain what ttRPGs are. I finally manage to explain it as "It's a story, a collaborative story. One person makes a setting, a world, and the other people decide what they want to do it in, and the person to runs the game decides what effect those actions have on the world". People might understand ... I have no idea what other people think it is, which seems very alien to me. I can only imagine that ttRPGs so that foreign that people cannot comprehend even what it could be.
>>
>>44007655
Inform them that you spend a lot of time playing traditional games.
>>
>>44037803
Why waste you breath on that. I just say I like boardgames.
>>
>>44039103
Board games and ttRPGs are nothing alike, anon.
>>
>>44039448
But I'm not going to explain that to some stranger. If you want a girl to know you're "nerdy" just say boardgames. It's more socially acceptable and she can relate to playing boardgames.
>>
>>44039515
In my experience, board games is considerably less socially acceptable than ttRPGs, which is why I'd always go with D&D. But that's probably just down to my (presumably) differing geography.
>>
>>44012100
It is a nice design.
>>
>>44039539

SE England.

You've gotta understand the cultural osmosis at work here; it's cool to be a certain brand of nerd. Vidya, Star Wars -- and D&D. But boardgames? They remain (in the public's eye) solidly the domain of fat, balding middle-aged men along with model trains and aeroplanes.
>>
>>44039613
Interesting. I'm from Russia and it's not like D&D is frowned upon, people don't know about it and it's a pain to explain and you get nothing out of explaining it on a first/second date. In my experience boardgames seemed to go over pretty well, thanks to time cafes with stacks of casual games. Also a lot of people own Munchkin or even more popular Dixit.
>>
>>44039675
Oh, you absolutely don't need to explain D&D to anyone here. If you said board games, people would either assume Monopoly and Ludo etc., or the aforementioned antisocial middle aged men.
>>
>>44039613
Bullshit, I am from SE England and everyone I know has played at least the casual boardgames, every family has them in their house. And everyone I knew at university played boardgames.

If anything the stereotype is that boardgames are for children and families, I have never even heard of the idea that they are for middle aged men with train sets.
>>

Read >>44039739 mang.

By "board game" I meant *these* board games, as in wargames, worker placement games and the like. Not family board games.

And if you said "I'm really into boardgames" people aren't going to assume you mean fucking snakes and ladders.
>>
>>44040997
>wargames

Even some of the 'cool' kids at school played those, I have never seen people be outright accepting of them or people who play them.
>>
>>44041073
*outright unaccepting

In any case they are not 'boardgames', if you said really into boardgames people might assume Ticket to Ride, Catan, Cosmic Encounter and similar.

Walk around with large, spiky Warhammer models crammed down your underpants, poking out of the rim of your trousers from every angle.

Make sure it crunches and rustles as you walk.

An aside: how is this thread so remarkably civil?

By wargame I don't mean 40k etc.
Yeah. That would be considered less socially acceptable than D&D.

And you apparently interact with a very strange subset of people if you think Ticket to Ride is less socially acceptable than Dungeons and Dragons.

The point is its a board game which is seen as more normal by default than anything like DnD.

Nobody is going to assume you are a weirdo if you bring out a game like that and teach them how to play it instead of Scrabble or Monopoly. They will probably have a lot of fun in fact.
