You have to take a feat, post character creation, for them to gain literacy. You can't take it while making the character.

IIRC it was two skill points, not a feat, and you could have it right from character creation. Of course, that was a decent chunk of skills for a class with 4 + Int that tended toward low Int builds. And back then Commoners were illiterate too, because they just get the worst of everything.

I see you haven't gotten some levels on them. Barb has some of the highest AC possible in the game. With resistance, they have the highest effective hp in the game.

Dude, in 3.PF Barbarians are the only fun 1pp martial to play as (though Slayer can get close) and are considered to be relatively well balanced.
Granted, its probably a better idea to grab Path of War for martials instead, but its not always available due to being 3pp.
