What were their classes, according to any of the D&D core books?

>Gandalf
>Aragorn
>Boromir
>Legolas
>Gimli
>Merry
>Pippin
>Sam
>Frodo

And, just for fun, Gollum
>>
>>43976532

Aragorn and Boromirs were different flavors of Fighter.

Merry's a PC using a Commoner NPC template with 1 level in Fighter and many ranks in Stealth. The DM gives him a Luck Dice pool to make up for the gimped template.
>>
The only one I'm sure of us that Gandalf was a rogue.
>>
all of them were bards
literally
>>
>>43976532

>Gandalf
Cleric maybe? Outsider? Weird, hardest of the 9

>Aragorn
Ranger

>Boromir
Fighter

>Legolas
Fighter

>Gimli
Fighter

>Merry
Fighter

>Pippin
Fighter

>Sam
Expert

>Frodo
Aristocrat

[Gollum

Rogue /spoiler]
>>
>>43976555
Aragorn is a Ranger dumbass

He is just of the non-shit rangers that dont use 2 swords and doesnt complain about his animal companion Boromir being killed off before lvl 10 and not allowed a new one (Tolkien thought animal companions were OP)

Tolkien was a bit of a dick DM
>>
>>43976532
Sam (Ranger)
His ranged weapon of choice is apples, and his animal companion was Bill the pony.
>>
>Gandalf
Sorceror or Cleric
>Aragorn
Ranger
>Boromir
Fighter
>Legolas
Ranger
>Gimli
Fighter
>Merry
Bard
>Pippin
Fighter
>Sam
Paladin
>Frodo
Commoner

Gollum was a Rogue

TOO EASY

>Aragorn is a Ranger

lmao, no. Aragorn is a party face and a Fighter.
>>
Aragorn is the kind of ranger whose first Favored Terrain was "Your Face," and his second was "Your Ass."
>>
>>43976634
>>Sam
>Paladin
YES

YYEEEEEESSSS
>>
Boromir was the best of them

Paladin/Ranger multiclass. Lay on Hands, bro.
>>
>>43976873

Aragorn has never healed someone, senpai. He dated the Elven Cleric but due to party drama they had to call it off.
>>
>>43976824
>Aragon
>Sixteenth Chieftain of the DĂșnedain and the Rangers of the North

>Not a Ranger
Isnt it past your bedtime kiddo?
>>
>>43976873

He used the Athelas, not some direct personal power.

To me, that's a heal skill check, possibly using a magical item, not Lay on Hands.
>>
>>43976844
>>43976844
Favored Terrain: New Zealand
>>
>>43976922
This

Like Survival or herbalism or a Ranger class ability
>>
>>43976893
Faramir and Eowyn would like a word.
>>
>>43977002

Again, Athelas. And it's not so much that he healed them as bolstered their abilities to shake off the Black Breath.

They all got similar "doses" but Merry pops back up almost immediately from the same Athelas treatment, whereas Faramir and Eowyn are out of it for days.

>He sat down on the ground, and taking the dagger-hilt laid it on his knees, and he sang over it a slow song in a strange tongue. Then setting it aside, he turned to Frodo and in a soft tone spoke words the others could not catch. From the pouch at his belt he drew out the long leaves of a plant.

I don't know mayne, that sounds a lot like spellcasting with a material component.
>>
>>43976532
Gandalf: Eldritch Knight
>>
>>43977044

But it's also not necessary. When he uses the athelas in the Houses of Healing, he just breathes on them, crushes them, and then puts them in hot water.
>>
>>43977049
His spell casting class was Sorcerer.

The old coot had charisma for days.

Gandalf was a Maiar Warlock who made a pact with a Valar

what class is Tar-mairon?
>>
>Gandalf
aasimar equivalent cleric in a wizard costume. Needing help from the flame kind of puts the nail in the coffin on this for me, plus he comes off as wise and carries a sword which a full-on mage would find no use for.
>Aragorn
human ranger handed a fancy noble template. adds to lifespan, mostly because the gm wrote him into the story and didn't want him getting killed.
>Boromir
str based fighter that thinks he is a bard. opts to take will saves and interaction tests far more often than he should, but not a bad guy.
>Legolas
dex based optimized fighter. might not actually be the best rper in the group but the party is nice to him, asking him what he sees from time to time to try and include him. probably somebody's little brother.
>Gimli
barbarian bro. probably remembered to bring the munchies for the session. happy to act competitive without taking too much time on his out of character stuff.
>Merry
rogue multiclass into fighter. new to the game but really gets into character.
>Pippin
rogue multiclass into bard. probably brought into the game by merry's player to bounce interactions off of eachother, but kind of came into his own toward the end.
>Sam
paladin that is convinced he still hasn't come out of commoner level 0. allows for frodo to fill the spotlight when he is probably the better character as a party lead.
>Frodo
bard. asked the gm to run this session after seeing the end of the last game. kind of overexcited and takes up more time than necessary, but the table puts up with it because without him the game probably wouldn't have happened.
>>
>>43978221

>Legolas
>Optimized.

How? He literally does nothing of note except get one lucky shot against a winged beast. Even Gimli can chop up more orcs than he can.
>>
>>43978312
more so that elves live forever, and he has been fine tuning his sheet far more carefully than anyone else at the table.

it's the whole bit about how elves can repeat a bit of swordplay perfectly with practice, yet despite the fact it doesn't always allow them to outdo the barbarian's str beefy axe.

UGH. No one has identified Gandalf's true class yet.

He's a paladin.

Evidence:

Lay on hands, heals a shit ton of people

Martially proficient with weapons (especially longsword, a classic paladin weapon)

Special Mount (Shadofax)

SMITE EVIL ("Until at last, I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside." referring to the balrog)

Also, his fireball throwing in the books is via his possession of the ring of fire. google it.

Source: I read all that shit and watched all that shit and fuck you fight me.
>>
>>43978809
And sam is a barbarian, see his fight v shelob for proof. No one else is worth arguing about.

Aragorn was a fucking ranger. His animal companion was Brego (horse).

its a ring of metaphysical fire, not pew-pew
>>
>>43976634
This, except Frodo gets at least a level in thief by the end, and Gandalf was a 2e-style god with levels in priest and wizard. >>43977220
Supports this because in 2e, ascending to godhood required Cha of at least 19.
>>43976824
He's a ranger who happened to roll high in Cha. Tolkien actually used the word ranger.
>>43977044
Or the Herbalism non-weapon proficiency while roleplaying the use of a mnemonic device.
>>43978361
He's a 2e Complete Book of Elves munchkin.
>>
>>43976797
>>43978221
>>43978924

>Gimli

Rangers can cast a small amount of druidic spells
>>
>>43976620
Dam you glorious basard
>>
>>43981106
But he uses an axe, wears the heaviest armor out of the Fellowship, and doesn't do anything particularly rogue-like unless you count the one time at the Hornburg where he takes advantage of a surprise round to kill a few orcs.

>>43979812
>He's a ranger who happened to roll high in Cha. Tolkien actually used the word ranger.
Tolkien using a term doesn't mean that the same term in D&D is necessarily accurate. Gandalf shares very few traits with a D&D wizard (especially compared to classes like cleric/paladin/sorcerer) despite being a wizard in-universe.
