Bullets also shoot further, and are a lot more inaccurate as opposed to "you there, you're now feeling sleepy".

While range is a thing, ISIS recruits are not going to be the best of shots.

The AK47 should do 2d6 damage using d20 modern rules and have good range. This is roughly enough to kill most level 1 wizards with their low hit die. Having more range means they can fire on the wizards providing they can see them, and withotu dextrety or sneak, wizards with this level cannot yet hide themselves through spells, so they'll have a hard time approaching ISIS positions without being murdered by fire. BUT, Magic missile ALWAYS hit and 2 or 3 should be enough to kill a level 1 warrior, which is the template we will use for ISIS members. Assuming the battle take place along a single day, wizards can't recharge their spells, and without knowing how much ammo ISIS has, it's anyone's guess if they would have bullets by the end of the day too. if they have 3 or 4 magazines each, armed with ak47's and at least one rudimentary frag grenade each, or molotov cocktails, I think it's fair to assume an ISIS victory. They holdout positions till wizards run out of spells, and they either shoot or maul them down with the stock of the rifles, since in a physical fight a warrior will surely beat a wizard.

Now, this is a frail scenario as a single level 5 wizard could probably win agaisnt 80 isis members.

Not really. Unless you mean that the initial proposal assumed naked, unarmed ISIS fighters. I was assuming 'standart' gear for each side, and level 1 wizards doesnt have scrolls and potions by definition. A level 1 character cant really afford those.

Magic missile, sleep, color spray, burning hands, true strike + crossbow, mage armor, shield, alarm, expeditious retreat, enlarge person, reduce person, charm person. Any one of these things could give the wizards an edge over the ISIS recruits.

Most people can't really afford grenades and rockets, either. The reason ISIS has those things is because the region has been flooded with them for decades.

If you assume the only kit involved is what the fighters could personally afford, ISIS ends up much more poorly equipped.
