Does /tg/ like gothic horror setting?

It isn't generic Tolkien-clone fantasy, Generic 80's cyberpunk, or Literally Star Wars, so no, probably not.

Art deco is gothic as well.

because it looks cool with vampires and shit.

/tg/ loves Gothic Horror. I have no basis for this but I am sure it is true.

There's just a lack of decent ones.

Always loved Ravenloft, fantastic setting let down by a rules system that didn't suit it
World of Darkness obviously has a gothic tone, especially in Wraith
Colonial Gothic intrigues me, but no-one I know wants to play it

There has been huge Castlevania threads lately

that wouldn't surprise me much.

Oddly enough, I've run a Ravenloft game with a mostly-female party, and it was the most sexually-charged game I've ever run. Something about gothic horror just lends itself to that.

I think gothic horror settings are really great. I've actually got my own setting floating around in my head, not sure if I'll actually do anything with it though. In my opinion, gothic horror settings are a lot like McRibs: succulent, sweet, savory. Perfect in every way.

How heroic or powered do you like your gothic horror games? Are you meant to only barely survive against the horrors of the night, or are you meant to be that champion who can potentially banish the night, the beacon of light in the dark?

Cool.
Why are you discussing Ravenloft then, when you literally have nothing to add except a negative opinion?

No love for Dark Heresy?

Say what you will about the direction GW is taking Warhammer 40k, Black Industries and FFG just absolutely NAILED a Gothic feel.

Corruption and madness in the halls of power. Check! Evil, corrupt clergy? Check! Haunting, crumbling edifices brimming with dark secrets? check. Romance and death intertwined check, check check check.

Dark Heresy 1st edition's fluff really is like the bastard child of Frank Herbert and Edgar Alan Poe.

I really have to wonder how Japanese gamers felt about seeing the beloved Captain Harlock re-imaged as grief-stricken, utterly evil, insane megalomaniac who nearly brings about the end of the entire galaxy?
>>
>>43967319
point blank question: what do you think of the % success based system of 40k rpgs? I tried to do some session with my group, but they don't seem appreciate much the high chance of hit failure
>>
>>43962372
Is your sword a paladin?
>>
>>43967386
It's really not that high.

The DH system is all about stacking bonuses. So, let's say you have a BS of 30. Aiming gives you +10, single shot gives you +10, and close range bonuses can factor in. So a basic character with proper actions can easily turn a 30% chance into a 50% chance without any special equipment. Knowing those bonuses, knowing when to use them, and reminding players of them are things a 40krpg GM needs to do.
>>
>>43967386
I like it. I'm a huge fan of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd edition so the Warhammer 40k rpgs are nice fit for me. It's simple straightforward and easy to understand.

Now, I can see how it might be frustrating but the high miss chance is there to balance out the fact that, when you do hit (or get hit); it hurts. A lot.
>>
>>43967450
Probably I have understimated the importance of modifiers myself.
>>43967464
how does it work on fantasy? since its melee oriented I guess there qare less combat options, like cover and aiming
>>
>>43967516
The whiff-chance is a lot higher in fantasy. IN 2nd edition, a lot of the strategy comes from balancing attack and defense, especially if you are using a 2-handed weapon. Parries are not automatic. You can get one by using an off-handed weapon such as a shield. Yes, shields count as WEAPONS not ARMOUR in WFRP 2nd ed. A buckler or other small weapon grants no bonus to parry, while larger shields give a bonus to your WS and an automatic parry chance once per round.

If you don't have an off-hand weapon, you have to choose weather to use a Swift attack, which is a full round attack action that lets you make a number of swings equal to your Attacks characteristic, using an all-out attack which is a single shot that gives you a +10% chance to hit or fighting defensively by making a single swing for a half action and then going into defensive stance which is also a half-action.
>>
>>43967636
That's actually pretty interesting system. guess I'll read the core soon
>>
>>43965509
Unfortunatley my 'notes' are mostly scrawled on paper or kicking around on .txt files.
I do remember the last thread you posted that in, and its been appropriated for my own use
>>43965456
In Bloodborne the 'vampires' in Cainhurst were inbibers of the old blood since a time before the Healing Church, which is what lead to their behaviour and the Executioners, so its not like its two seperate horror enemies there just for novelty.
>>
>>43961883
Not a fan of her design, but I do hope the game is fun.
>>
>>43968187
Its mostly fault of the artist and his tendency to draw potato faces. it would look better with more elegant lines
>>
>>43967319
I like Dark Heresy but I don't think it does enough to detail the universe. Taking just anything relatively earth-like cultures and throwing some gothic paint on it doesn't work for me.
>>
>>43964362
Innistrad was awesome flavor-wise because it was so small.
It's just one small continent with one big city, two minor cities, many hamlets, towns and villages and lots of space for evil to lurk.
Being so small also allowed them to really put detail into every place and the people who populate those places. It's the only plane with an actual map and where you can figure out what basic lands belong to what province and where in each province some of the important places are located.

It feels like an actual place you can actually picture traveling through.

And of course they'll ruin it in SOI with Emrakul raping everything for cheap Innsmouth references.

Gomez don't read this
5e homebrew game, done two one-shots with randoms to flesh out the backstory of the campaign before I run it on my regular group. Not using typical rules or stats for named monsters. One of the one-shot test players tried to get himself bitten by a lycanthrope during an encounter thinking he would get infected and get to be a werewolf, instead it grappled him and vomited white-phosphorus blood stuff on his face. When the party retreated a bunch of baby ghoul things showed up and lapped up the face-melt as the werewolf gently caressed them. Another player cast a shitload of really obvious enchantment magic in public like it was nothing and the city watch started shooting him.The night afterwards a mob tried to rip him out of his bed at the inn and execute him for unsanctioned witchcraft. Yes, I had explained that this would happen. Yes, did try to play dumb. Still haven't thought of a good way to integrate skellingtons that are actually honest-to-goodness scary.
