That card has won me quite a few drafts back in the day. Being a 1 drop flyer that can potentially replace itself is pretty damn amazing. Its really a shame that it isn't viable in modern.
>>
I really hate this Faerie meme.
>>
>>43958427
Is modern faeries a viable thing?
>>
>>43959514
the short answer is no
>>
>>43959566
Damn, I like the aesthetics of the lorwyn cards. Maybe for more casual play.
>>
>>43959514
Tribal decks and decks built around specific mechanics (hellbent, convoke, madness etc) are just weaker in general because they don't have enough power printed in them. They may have a few powerhouse cards but mostly the majority of the cards using the mechanic aren't playable. If you want to use that mechanic in a deck just use the best card that uses the mechanic in an already good deck.
>>
>>43959617
True - from what I've learned, getting into modern (since I had a lot of cards from mirrodin, kamigawa, onslaught and stuff) is that most of the top decks are quick combos or just sweeping the field. At least, that what I gathered, and the budget affinity deck I'm wrangling together supports that idea.

That said, casual as it may be, I'm a sucker for those mechanics and tribal effects, and fairies looked pretty cool, with Oona or whatever her name is, the fairy lord.

Honestly tribal can work if wotc wanted it to. It just needs a glue card, something to knit it all together. They have huge boners for elves and they don't mind printing out a new cheesy elf practically every set, even when the core is already perfect
toss this fucker in literally any elf list and you become a combo deck. >what sort of combo?
Infinite life, infite mana, infinite tokens, infinite direct damage... Splinter twin? Look at this fuckers mana cost. In ELVES.
>>
>>43960342
Really fucking good vs unprepared decks imo. Burn has to time skullcracks very well since these big fucking mossy cockstompers can gain you life for some reason.
control with a good sb might have a field day tho
Im assuming you mean "big mean green" deck right?

heres an example goblin list that could be t2-3 off the top
atarka goblins
>4 piledrivers
>4 goblin guides
>4 legion loyalists
>4 bushwacker
>4 foundrystreet denizen
>4 tattermunge maniac
>4 goblin cohort
>4 attarkas command
>0-4 moggwar marshal
>0-4 goblin grenade
>0-4 lightning bolt
>2-4 lords of choice (king/chieftain)

You can get cute with gruul lands, especially since it's only a splash. You don't have to run attarkas either, you could go jund or mono-red.
>>
>>43961388
I personally find moggwar too slow in attarka goblins, and I usually only fit 2 lords into this build (cheiftain).
You could add some creature buffs and go all out; mutagenic growth protects piledriver from those pesky bolts, temur battlerage can be a wincon on him, and brute force/titans strength (or groundswell if green) are all decent filler.
>>

50 KB, 223x310
>>43961481
T1 priority : foundrystreet>guide>cohort>tatter>loyalist>bolt>>>>>>>>bushwhacker
T2 priority :
do turn 1, twice.
risk the piledriver drop
if you cant, drop a bushwacker/attarkas
or maybe a grenade
T3 priority
This is usually where you use Chieftain, or attarkas/bushwhacker for huge damage along with using the other 1 mana for a goblin.
If piledriver is out, a loyalist can give him trample and other goodies on the swing

If you're low on lands, don't worry, just keep dropping 2 power goblins
T4
Attarkas+bushwacker
if pile driver isn't out, you can send him out along with bushwacker for a huge swing. You can do the same thing T5 with chieftain and piledriver
Grenades/bolts are great finishers

I cannot figure out what to get my friend for Xmas and I don't want to just buy him a single 40 dollar card.

Check out this list and tell me what you think. It's Gruul Zoo.

4 Wooded Foothills
4 Windswept Heath
3 Stomping Ground
3 Rootbound Crag
3 Forests
3 Mountains
(I'll be updating the manabase a bit)

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Atarkas Command
2 Become Immense
2 Rancor

4 Goblin Guide
4 Legion Loyalist
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Burning Tree Emissary
2 Goblin Piledriver
4 Flinthoof Boar
3 Boggart Ram Gang
3 Ghor Clan Rampager

Pretty solid? or needs a lot of work?

So much power is in that "untap" part, and in this deck it's just vigilance (not that "just vigilance" is bad by any means)
Plus imagine him with this equipped. Play a red ritual spell? Ggwp.

I personally would use Swiftspears instead for the haste. Alternatively, Nivmagus elemental
>>

>>

>If you want to have fun, which is what card games are for

Doesn't work, the weird doesn't untap from putting a copy on the stack, only actually casting a spell

You could could get two copies out of it by
>cast ritual
>respond to untap trigger and copy it
>untap, copy again
But that's it

The combo with Blistercoil is paradise mantle and cantrips. Tap him to make a mana, use that to cast a cantrip, untap him, draw another cantrip, repeat until you can grapeshot them to death and hope you don't fizzle/they don't have removal

24-26 land (depending on your curve)
4 bolt
4 path
2-3 helix

Just throw in Young Pyro, Lingering Souls and some hand disruption and you'll be good.

It's a triggered ability. It happens every turn, whether you want it to or not. If you only control that creature, you have to sacrifice it.
>>
>>43969823
This was pre-Kommand.

>>43970048
It was 24 land, including manlands, Young Pyro, Souls, Butcher, even Stoke the Flames as it actually functions quite well. Grim Lavamancer + Vault of the Archangel was a cute interaction for later in the game too since he zaps with deathtouch. I might re-brew it one day, but I have a couple decks for that. At the moment I'm the dumbass playing RUG Loam, but Junk Aristocrats is something I'd like to try. It's been decent in my sketchy testings. Combo kills on turn 4 aren't unknown.

If you really want to use Vault, you need to be running token producers like bitterblossom alongside your other shit, you get free removal from every token you get. Sorin also plays well with that strategy.
>>
>>43970599
Sorin was there. The main token producers I had were Pyromancer and Souls. It's not like you're Vault.dec or anything, it's just a land with a nice ability you might use, kinda like how Abzan runs Vault and Township.

Playing similiar kind of deck. Really want full set of lightning helix. You want celestial colonnades. Geist rarely gets to attack, but wins the game if he does. Spell snare can be pretty damn disgusting if it doesn't hit. Would mix remand and mana leak (maybe 3x remand and 2x mana leak), since remand is shit in some match ups. Haven't tested boros charm yet, because I sold them when I was weak. You really want to set your sideboard against burn. Helix helps, but it's hard, hard race.

so how terrible of an idea is it for my intro to modern to be either affinity or infect?
also how much of a difference is there between the budget and normal versions of these decks?
>>
>>43973433
Budget Affinity is unplayable.
Budget Infect can steal a few games but that's it.

I started with Affinity and it's a fine place to start. If you want to ingrain yourself in Modern more, you should consider other options with multi-deck staples like UR Twin.
>>
>>43973433
budget affinity isn't even a deck
infect is already cheap but if you cut the pendelhavens and shit the deck will be pretty garbo probably, but dont get me wrong. in terms of how strong you can get in modern on a budget, budget infect is certainly not your worst chance. budget decks are weak but infect is not the weakest

>>
>>43973433

Infect is boring as hell to play. For a fun budget deck try BW Tokens. All the key cards are commons and uncommons, and most of the rares in the deck are cheap thanks to the Modern Event Deck.

I say start here
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/bw-token-budget-copy-1/
and then upgrade if you've got the funds to do so.
>>
>>43973618
Burn is inexpensive if you stick to 1 or maybe 2 colours. You can always use off colour fetchlands and run just 1/2 Foundries for your Boros Charms. Zurgo could sub for Guides.
>>
>>43973618
Fun is subjective. I like Valakut Titan and it's not too expensive.

http://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/modern-valakut-titan#paper

Easily upgradable to become a different deck, too. You can slowly aim for Cryptic Command and Snapcaster Mage and bam, you get the classic Scapeshift deck AND the BTL Scapeshift deck. Then move to Twin. Then move to Grixis. Then move to whatever you want, man.

It's viable. It's a really fucking boring deck to play though IMO.
>>
>>43973777
oh, forgot to ask.
how functional do you think the deck woud be without scapeshift and fetches?
at least for the first few months.

>>43973433
Affinity isn't really fun or typical magic.

You either swing in really early with evasion for the kill or your opponent hoses you with one card and you lose. People might tell you there is a lot of thought going on with Robots but honestly, it's just math. Whether you can swing all-in and kill or not.
>>
Is there a site to help build mana base?

I mean, I can find the ones that tell me to count symbols and it'll give the generic "10 swamps 15 plains" answer. Is there on that gives specific lands?

Without Scapeshift you lose half your wincons.
Without fetchlands you lose Khalni Garden Expedition and need something else to fill that spot.

Add more Primal Commands, I guess.

Khalni Heart Expedition, of course.

Some cool variants include adding faithless looting and thunderous wraths, up to 4 if you want. It goes well with hellsparks, and theres a madness bolt you can add a few of too.
19 mountains should do.

you can swap hellsparks for ash zealots or keldon marauders

Ten swamps simply means ten sources of black mana. If you can count how much of what kind of mana each of your lands produces, you should be able to figure it out. Otherwise, just copy decklists.
>>
>>43974228
Grim is a pretty OG tech. I dk if it's still good. And Rider would be real good for jeskai aggro I think.

>>
>>43967245
I'm just trying to make a point that this is a childrens card game played at 70mph on bikes and that it should be take less seriously. If you're actually going to play a competitive deck, be on the level of the pros and go compete, because otherwise you're gaining less than the fun you are not havingl.
>>
>>43976129
Some people think winning is fun but they don't necessarily want to devote time to grinding.
>>
>>43976234
Playing against burn with a deck, which doesn't have enough value to overcome that shit isn't fun. Best fun I had today was playing against weird ass homebrew, which actually was close to win.
>>
>>43976540
>Playing against burn with a deck, which doesn't have enough value to overcome that shit isn't fun
Sideboard better or play a different deck then?

How much of an upgrade is 4x Serum Visions over 4x Gitaxian Probe in UR Twin? Is the difference night and day?
>>
>>43977359
They do different things
>>
>>43977388
I'm running the Probes almost purely to have an effectively 56 card deck. I need filtering bad.

I guess I should rephrase it: how much of an impact does a playset of Serum Visions have on a deck's consistency

>>
>>43977485

>>
>>43975657
I'm stupid so humor me

Fetches counts towards sources right?
>>
>>43977359
It is a huge upgrade. Street Wraith effects have no place in a control deck.
>>
>>43977564
yes. fetches produce that mana in a roundabout way with two cards. that's their benefit.
>>
>>43977564
No. They count as fractions towards sources. A fetch only ends up providing as many sources as the land it gets and should not be counted for more than it should get. For example, a misty rainforest in a BUG deck never provides all three sources as once, and if you intend to fetch duals with it most of the time, you should count it as 2/3rds of a B, U, and G source.
>>
>>43977564
but you have to weigh them not as perfect sources if you're not running shocks or the conditions for checks are there cause they'll only produce one of those types per match.
>>
>>43977620
i like you, keep on keepin on

Control isn't very popular or successful in Modern, and there's a portion of the playerbase that gets very angry when others bring it up. They usually say stuff like "control is a dead archetype outside of type 2", "any deck without a proactive gameplan is shit" and "magic has evolved past draw-go control decks".

While there is some truth to what they say, I can't help but wonder what inspired their vehemence.

Alright, looking for some help with this list.

Not sure what to cut for a V clique, or if I should include one at all. Should I got for the 6/4 combo pieces of go down to 5/3. Should I go up to 4 remands? I feel grixis doesn't want the full 4 but I could see running them.

Anything sideboard change suggestions? The 3 drops in the side i'm not sure about, maybe cut electrolyze for rending volley or roast? With terminate I feel I don't need those so much.
