In a faraway land, more far-flung in credibility than in kilometers, there was a secluded forest.

And in that forest, in the cozy, smoky shade, dwelt a peculiar people known as the Lanternfolk.

They were a gladsome bunch and rather jaunty too, as one might expect. But times were changing...

The resources they were using to keep their flames lit was quickly becoming scarce. A new reserve or new source of fuel is needed or the civilization dies within a year.

Into the depths and the darkness of the mysterious recesses of the earth they dug, but to no avail.

Things were looking dim as the gas supply dwindled with each passing day.

To the north of the land, the lanterfolk waivered to venture

For in the frozen forests, blanketed by snow dwelled another people, burly and tall, their remorse as cold as cool cast iron.

Above their heads loomed thick smoke, and their bellies roared as they chopped down trees to fuel their blaze

The Lanternfolk would frighten their children with tales that your end would soon be near if you feel their sweltering heat, and the roaring bellows behind you. Your final sight being the blazing red fire and a fell swing of their lumber axes

Some of the radical lanternfolk advocated to grow the luminescent fungi they found in the caverns they dug.

But in order to do so, they had to extinguish their flames first and be 'reborn', their housing glowing faint green.

Those who underwent the process returned changed, no longer merry and curious. But cold and distant, their movements slow as if every step rooted them in the earth

Try as they might-- and a mighty try it was-- spring was coming. And that meant new lanterns to light!

New lanternfolk are forged. While this could, for a time, hold off the crisis, the problem is that once a lantern is brought to life the urge to spread the new flame is strong.

It's a delicate process, creating a new lanternling. It's equal parts magic and science, a great deal of craftsmanship and just the right amount of mysticism. Things rarely go awry, but what would happen if the fungal lanterns tried to bring life with their resources?

Perhaps it's the miner who've come back with growths upon their metallic frame, due to the thick spore ridden air down below

>the lanternfolk gathered for the lighting of the new lanternlings
>one came with news before it began:
>the 'fungals,' as they'd come to be known, were seen outside the settlement crouching and spreading sand, which came from their heads. Perhaps they are dying?
>It was agreed unanimously that it was sad that the fungals were to die.
>But privately, a few of the lanternfolk were glad. Those folk had extinguished themselves and returned, somehow. It was strange and many of the regular folk had feared the fungals. Perhaps now they would come to an end.
>After a great long time the lanternfolk of the settlement emerged from the Forge Hall celebrating and ringing bells. The Silver Lantern was obscured this night, and the sky was black as oil.
>The two new lanternfolk who had been newly born inside were among them, already as tall and elegant as the rest, for that is how new lanternfolk are forged. It had taken this great long time to light their flames, for that is how new lanternfolk are lit. But unlike the rest, their frames were not yet even remotely blackened by their soot, for that is how new lanternfolk are.
>But after a few moments of ringing, the one from before hushed them, and raised an arm, pointing into the darkness lit only by the flickering light of the flames behind him.
>Just beyond the boundaries of the settlement were the fungals he had seen before the ceremony. They had all fallen over from their crouches, and their strange lights had all gone dark. But their bodies were lit up bright as bright by the green pallor of the thousands of green points of light that covered the ground around them.
>The lanternfolk huddled about and quieted themselves. The brave one stooped to examine the closest point of light, and the rest watched.
>Each point of green was a tiny cold light, in a tiny little case, in a tiny little fungal lanternfolk, no more than six inches tall. There were thousands of them, all growing at once.

In the middle of night, beneath the waning moon, a council was held to discuss their fate.

Said one, "As everyone knows, the fungus that glows truly shows the solution we need."

Said another, "Too dim, too cold, and not nearly bold enough for the folk among us. Let us walk toward the dawn, then capture the sun, and forget such talk of fungus!"

Said one last, "More than blocking the breeze are the merits of trees, I say to you folk so good. Let us solve our poor plight and light up the night with fuel from the forest's wild wood!"

Saluton!

Welcome to our little forest home, dear onlooker. Feel free to suggest actions for our lanternfolk.

Please be mindful that I am attempting to maintain a fairytale tone, so keep it family friendly.

I am Pmalux (Lamplight), your storyteller and guide to the ways of the lanternfolk.

Thank you for joining us this evening.
>>
>>43935925
Well, I suppose we had better chop down some trees. The other options don't really, not nearly appease.
>>
See what the bunnyfolk have to offer and also these dudes. >>43932099

>>43936053
With a chop and a slash,
the trees were felled fast
before morning sun
could rise.
But upon dawn's light
-- oh such a sight! --
they were met with a
sad surprise.

Though kindling they now had in abundance, the forest's songbirds were bereft of their arboreal homes.
>>
>>43936414
We make birdhouses with some of the kindling! And birdbaths!
>>
>>43936414
Due to having fungal parts, perhaps our green-tinged organic friends are more aware of nature's arts and their help to us they'd lend.

Let's ask them to help us; perhaps some of them will find a bit of enthusiasm in helping the birds of the forest!

Maybe we should begin as >>43936468, by building a few birdhouses and birdbaths. We'd better be careful not to use too much of the wood, though, or this whole venture will have been fore nothing.
Perhaps we should plant some new trees to begin a longer-term solution.
>>
>>43936241
From their forest village, the moonbunnies watched the lanternfolk loggers. Though they shall sorely miss the trees, they shall assist you in any way that maintains harmony.

>>43936468
>>43936627
>>
>>43936733
Alright, so the energy crisis is solved, or at least taken care of for the time being. The moonbunnies are our bros, and we have the weirdo fungal lanterns around.

Welp, I say we talk to the fungals and see what exactly is different about themselves and how it feels being fueled by fungus.
>>
>>43936627
Shall we get those trees planted, then?

In fact, let's invite all the rabbits and fungalbros along and make a merry work party!
>>
>>43936899
>Merry work party

We create the Lantern Bloc.

>>43936800
The fungal lanternfolk experience the world in a detached sort of way, as if in a lifeless dream. Nothing seems real to them, even their senses are unconvincing. Though despite this, they do not seem to suffer.

The lanternfolk make quick work of replanting the trees. What wood is not used for fuel is made into quaint birdbaths and birdfeeders for the displaced avians.
>>
>>43937477
Then let's get on to training some birds to carry messages back and forth between us and the bunny town.
>>
>>43937615
We have a choice of options:

1. Roll 1d20 to determine success.
2. Wait for a majority vote.
