Honestly not that hard, especially if you have prior wargaming experience. The big hurdle is learning to keep your eyes on the scenario rather than killing all the enemies.

I have prior experience with Warmachine minis though, and those things are fucking retarded as far as assembly goes most of the time.
I'm plotting out a crew pool for when I add Dreamer to my roster.

I like one or two Void Wretches and Death Marshals, haven't played with Aionus or the Scion, and I'm pretty unimpressed with the Nothing Beast. I'm also leaving Karina out most of the time too, but only because I don't own enough resser models to summon.
Out of faction, Hannah or Killjoy often make the cut, Freikorps Librarians are always good, and sometimes I'll bring a Wretch + Rats. Lazarus and the Convict Gunslinger should also be good with potential move + rapid fire when fast, but I haven't gotten to try it yet.

This list can bury 5 models and generate Death Marshals and any Horror Ressers I want. So it should be able to skew numbers quickly. Once I get it out together, I will see how it goes.
The Beast and Wretchs are limited in burying models by their Glimpse the void trigger's wording.

I don't think Dawn Serpent and Komainu really fit well with Shenlong. I'd use those spaces for more Archers/Snipers.
Also something to consider is Toshiro lets you hire Punk Zombies with him. They're also great with Sensei Yu, since you can push them into enemy range and then use all of the Zombie's actions on getting a Flurry off for a shitload of attacks..

He's a bit of a weird one. You can play him as pure denial against a kill crew like Marcus or Lady J or Viktorias. But then you're probably not doing the strategy, probably reckoning if your opponent is taking one of the above crews. His crew is deceptively fast but not particularly hardy. Montressor is a bit of an oxymoron. He wants everything in base contact with him, but with only a slightly above average Def of 6 and only 8 boxes protecting him, he gets cut down really easily if you're not obnoxiously careful with him. Typically, running Jack out with reckless abandon won't net you anything negative. Oldest Magic is bullshit, it fucks with Lady J, Viktorias, Perdita ect, ect. not being able to bypass his hard to kill/wound with 12 boxes makes his extremely difficult to deal with. What I find is that if you use Jack to lure everybody, you can usually use follow pain to gang up on those who engaged Jack and deal with them swifty. Especially with Montressor having Nimble. he's decent at turf war, but doesn't necessarily have the model count that other crew like smmoning levi, resser McMourning, etc etc would typically like to run. Same problem with Recconoiter, I feel like Squatters Rights is probably his strongest strategy. Having the models more or less centralized enables his crew to spread out and claim the markers while still being fast enough with with 0's to gang up on those who engage friendly models.
As a side note, The Hanged are almost essential with Jack. Dealing half health and denying healing is huge. Killjoy, McMourning, Executioners, Flesh Golems, any beefcake more or less they ruin. enjoy him, one of my favorite crews lore wise

Lady J has pretty much the worst starting box in the game for her. Judge does her no good and 3 death marshals is always 1 or 2 more than you'd ever need. I'd spring for Franc ASAP as they are like one of the best synergies in the game. Both Brutals, Sidir, Anything that can benefit from Inspirational Swordplay; hounds, pale rider, lone marshal, or Dr. Grimwell as runners; Austingers as cheese. Basically she is the best beatstick in the game, so support her and make part of your list dedicated to actually scoring VP, cause likely she'll be too tied up to do it via scheme markers.
Lady J's outfit really bothers me for ostensibly a professional soldier. Even Molly doesn't wear heels.

If you magnetize them so you can use three spiders individually or as a swarm, one extra box of six is probably good.

Leveticus is mostly a dirty old man. It mentions in Crossroads that he could technically make anything an anchor for his soul to be immortal, but he likes having pretty girls as the anchor instead. I'd recommend getting perfect/pro-fit sleeves. Keeps the cards from moving and messing up you wound marking's alignment.

In Thunders he can get a lot of milage out of TT Brothers. Depleted are great in Recconoiter for any NB crew, because everything in NB is so frickin expensive and they are insignificant minons, not peons. Tots could fill that slot too though, but Depleted have the brilliance synergy. I love Stitched with him because his high card quality means you always win Gamble Your Life, plus they gives your Beckoners someplace to hide.
