Greetings /tg/!

Recently I started paying attention to this board after reading a great deal of awesome stories.
Wanting to also play tabletop games I gathered quite a large amount of pdf. files but I can't figure out which is a good game to pop my /tg/ cherry.

All I ask of you is a recommendation for any tg related game so I can finally get into this.

D&D (now 5th edition) tends to be the popular entry drug into teeg shenanigans.

>Anti-skub gentleman with taste willing to peacefully disagree (note the closed fist vs the open hand in the first and second panels)
>skubfag throws the first punch
>he's also a fucking pussy that can be held back by only one guy where as when the anti-skubber needs two of his fellow gentlemen to restrain him because when it is time to defend himself he doesn't mess around

Even the comic creator knows skubfags are the worst

Honestly, this. People are going to try to get you to play their stupid hipster systems that no one outside of /tg/ has ever heard of, and in all honesty if you actually start looking around you'll probably find a system you like a lot more than D&D, but if you're just looking to dip your foot in the water, 5e is VERY solid (IMO the best edition in a long time, possibly ever), and you'll have no trouble finding people to play with.

That is a recommendation and all but how can I join a gamefinder thread when I don't know which game should I start with

I see that there is also Pathfinder. Is there really great difference between it and and D&D or is it just in minor rules?

Thanks!
I will try it.

Just a one more question.

How well does 5e gameplay translate over the internet?

Or any tabletop game in general?

Pathfinder is essentially a greatly expanded version of 3.5e, even though Paizo (who publish PF) and Wizards of the Coast (who publish D&D) have nothing to do with one another. It's popular as well and has a TON of content. It's not terrible, but it's clunky and overcomplicated, with some noticable balance issues.

Most RPGs can be played just fine over the internet. Generally you either like (or at least tolerate) that kind of play, or you don't. It doesn't change much from system to system

The best part of traditional gaming is in the socialising. Which means you should find out what your friends want to play, rather than what someone on the internet says is good.

If your friends aren't interested in roleplaying or wargaming, try a boardgame. The new wave of boardgames are seriously so much better than what most people think of as boardgames.

Also depends of what do you want. You probably know that there is a system for any kind of game you want. You only need to know which one.

As for "regulat" medieval fantasy, there is more game, but the rule still applies. Pathfinder/DnD and some of it's kind are made for heroes starting as your evereday soldier, going up to half-gods. While others like Exalted make you thrive among demi-gods and others will make you play poor dungeon dweller, struggling to simply stay alive.

So, "first" i would recommand for you to know which genre/kind of game you want, and then find among the different systems which one do you want.

I am done with the questions and thanks to everyone who helped me!

No problem, anon. Just remember not to take people here too seriously. They get way too into the pros and cons of various systems, when the people you play with are far more important. Get a good group of people together and you'll have fun, simple as that.
