The chances of their ever being a high budget war hammer 40k film are very slim. The chances of it being good are even smaller. Even it's always enjoyable to see a film that comes close, even if it's just in how it looks.

Jupiter ascending was a awful film with a shit plot. But the House of Abrasax are basically a rogue trader dynasty, they even have the crazy architecture and ships covered in statues.

So what films do you think capture that '40k-ness' anons?

pic related, he might not have been the most effective rogue trader, but he did have killer style.
>>

Blade Runner
Dark City

Dune, obviously.

Frank Herbet's Dune is basically Warhammer 40k, the TV miniseries. It's sad to see how far the Sci-Fi channel have fallen.

Also Space Pirate Sarah
>>
>>43910494
Harlock, the CGI one.

Take out the ending and it is about a Rogue Trader, a Techpriest, an Eldar, a couple guardsmen, and a commissar all banding together to investigate heresy within the Ecclesiarchy.

As for style, it's spot on. The Arcadia looks almost exactly like the Imperium's ships. The costumes are full of mechanical attachments and gothic flair. The cities are huge hive worlds filled with people.
>>
Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick.
>>
>>43910494
Was that their name? When discussing the film my friends call them Tuppence, Humpence, and Grumpence.
>>
>>43910494
Outlander is basically about a Stormtrooper on pre-Feudal world
the future bits of the Blackadder Christmas Special
>>
lets not be forgetting Event Horizon.
>>
Mutant Chronicles (2008) - Inquisitor and his retinue are on mission, to destroy some old chaos machine.
>>
and Aliens for that matter.

Balem
Titus
Kalique,

As I said, terrible film but lovely aesthetic and Abrasax is a good name, it would be fun to run a rogue trader game with them.
>>
>>43910494
Mad Max: Fury Road is basically GORKAMORKA
>>
>tfw will never be a film about Eldar vs Imperium from the perspective of the eldar without hippywanking them akin to Avatar
>>
Event Horizon is considered by some to be canonically humanities first attempt at Warp Drive

>>43911957
Their rigid social structure and methods of war I think exclude hippifying unless the director really didnt know the source material. So it would almost certainly happen
>>

how would Disney manage to turn a setting where the "good" guys are ruthless butchers to whom the idea of giving quarter (let alone mercy) to an enemy is physically disgusting into a viable mainstream franchise

If The Mouse ever wants to explore new genres it hasn't plundered all the gold out of then that's how they should do.

No half measure or increments of knocking the grimdark up a notch per film.

Just one big fucking leap to the far end of the grimdark spectrum in a move designed to startle. And then stick an 18+ sticker on it.

Make people notice.

They will flock to see it for curiosity alone.

Was i the only one really dissapointed with avatar?
It has the potential to be a really good film but instead it was just evil white man and great fantastic big blue native americans.
If they had added something like, the natives kill their weak children or the supplies from pandora could save millions of lives it could have been so much better
>>
>>43914046
If they had done that the movie would just have been labelled as racist and pro-colonialism, there's no clean way out
>>

>>
>>43914046
It annoyed me in 3 ways:

1) its the same magical american aboriginals plot as shit loads of other libtard hugfests

2) Quatrich and the Suit get replaced by different characters while the "heroes" are at the mountain base

3) if they cut out the mining shit and ebil-white-men smeg it would have been a bloody good Star Trek film, Scully exploring Pandora is the best bit of it

It's a shame that the Wachowskis are so obsessed with having "relatable" loser protagonists in otherwise fantastical stories. It worked well enough with Neo in The Matrix, but having a janitor as the main character in a Dune ripoff was just ridiculous.

The only original thing about 40K is grimdarkness. Which is pretty infantile. Gothic and dystopian themes are great but don't get absurd with routine mass-execution and sacrifice, with no shades of grey in anybody's morality.

40K gets too much credit for all the good ideas it uses from much better narratives.

>>43918674
>>43918701
Lynch tried to have his name taken off the credits, he was extremely unhappy with producer meddling and how it turned out.

Jodorowsky was set to make a Dune movie but ran out of money\couldn't convince producers to keep giving money to a madman. But it's insane how much of the pre-production stuff influenced later sci-fis. He had Giger working on art, for instance. There's documentary about it.

If they made a Dune movie today it'd be done as a trilogy and might actually work. But since it did so many tropes first that other narratives have since used it would seem pretty cliche, the Seinfeld Effect.

Nah, being a guardsman is not in any way like SST.
Degrading treatment by incompetent nepotism promoted officers, dialy routines of living in a theism, mysticism and superstition regarding technology, the fact that you are literally the weakest and mentally frailest combatant in any battle you fight, inferior equipment compared to anything you´ll face, general disregard for your life by anyone that gives you a command on the pain of death, 11 second average lifespan once battle is joined..., the list goes on quite a bit.
None of that is in any way reflected in starship troopers.
