D&D Essentials. All of the balance of 4e, but with out the stupid everybody-follows-the-same-power-progression-and-mechanic that made 4e classes feel too samey.
5e, 4e, E6, 13th Age, and Legend are all legitimate options too, though. All have warts, but there isn't a perfect system.

Really though the only system where a core mechanic was a good idea was Mutants and Masterminds 3rd edition.

It's nice that AD&D has more options than Basic, but the additional material tends to be of lower quality and the system adds a lot of bullshit rules and restrictions. Moldvay Basic is the best option, as the successor of base-level OD&D, only cleaned up and self-contained. AD&D makes good source material though.
