In the setting that I currently run I have a male moon God, but he is of two natures. He is effectively and Eldritch horror that converted to the side of the gods. I would have a problem with the use of the fucking retarded Dn'D alignment system being used because it's the biggest fucking plague on roleplaying entertainment in the history.

Also, Moon dieties are usually female, and Moon is generally associated with feminine principles, but that is hardly a rule (Thoft, Egyptian diety of the Moon was male, and he was generally regarded as a benevolent god of wisdom and by proxy, of order), so no - I really don't have an issue with the idea with the a male lunar diety.

The deal is that moon is GENERALLY speaking associated with feminine principles, and feminine principles are GENERALLY associated with chaos. At least so goes the old Jungian theory. And it's not entirely wrong, it's just that it was never meant to be presented as an absolute rule, and we know plenty of historical examples of lunar dieties that were male, and "orderly" (as male dieties usually tend to be).

I am only guessing here, but I'd suppose the problem here is that OP's players heard the old Jungian mythology model theory somewhere and took it too literary and became adamant about enforcing it in the process - it frequently happens to insecure people who feel the urge to practice something they have heard and that gives them feeling of being educated or smart. Hell, I doubt anyone here is stranger to these kinds of urges, myself included.

I think your are vastly overestimating the eruditeness of anyone that throws around the term "gender nazi." They're mad because it's not the norm for fantasy games. They are also probably, based again on their use a "gender nazi," tumblrinas that feel lunar deity-hood is a woman's safe place or whatever because their vague clusterfuck version of neopaganism said so in between advertisements for seance crystals and pentagram necklaces, and having a male lunar deity is LITERALLY raping ALL of womanhood because they're KILLING the DIVINE GODDESS.
>>
>>43889533
That's correct.
>>
>>43891896
As far as I know there are none, but I would warn against automatic association of "trickster" with chaos. It may seem intuitive to us now, but I would not be sure it was always percieved as such. Hell, in Slavic folklore, trickster is often ONE with the cultural hero character, who is the literal embodiment of order and social organization.

I think that "chaos" that is associated with feminine principle is much more fundamental form of chaos, an ontological one. Trickster operates within order, he uses the order to his own advantage. The feminine chaos is primordial chaos - potentiality itself, rather than just discord or social rebellion.

>>43891945
It's a norm of fantasy games precisely because it's the Jungian archetype - I'm not saying they necessarily have to know that it's most commonly associated with Jung (although, I seriously don't think it's such a rare and obscure knowledge in the first place), but they have been taught SOMEWHERE of the fact it's more "normal" or "common" or "proper" for a Lunar diety to be female.

As for the use of the term "gender nazi", to be honest I've never really encountered that anywhere, so I'm not exactly sure what it's supposed to mean.
I would assume that "gender nazi" would, in analogy to "grammar nazi" imply overzealous enforcement of gender-differenciation and roles - in opposition to more forgiving attitude towards gender stereotypes and roles. Am I wrong about that?
>>
>>43892037
"Gender nazi" is just a lazy, universal attack. You're right; "gender nazi" should be used to describe someone that's very strict about gender roles – in which case they would always have lunar deities be female because it's the norm – but that's not the case. Instead, the logic is:
>gender = what they're talking about
>nazi = bad
>gender+nazi = someone I disagree with about anything related to gender, regardless of the position they take.

I think the main problem here is that Moon is associated with feminity only in context of the Sun/Moon and day/night dichotomy (as sun is almost always associated with male principle). But moon can be viewed in different context, for an example you can set up the "darkness of night/light of the Moon" dichotomy, where Moon is the source of light, and hence suddenly becomes associated with male principles.
Most people who try to enforce the Jungian archetypes tend to forget that they are entirely contextual.

>Evil or even Chaotic Neutral nature deities of any sort (notably, at least /tg/ seems to like Obad-Hai and Viridi, so not all is lost)
Letting the whole "alignments are fucking retarded, stop fucking using them!" thing, I don't have a problem with natural dieties being chaotic, as I would have with the notion that there is just ONE god of nature. Nature is a little too complex phenomenon to be described under a single diety - there were always gods of various aspects of nature. The whole nature/nurture dichotomy is actually quite an anachronistic notion to force on pantheon, really.

>Good gods of winter (seriously, even death gods get a better rap)
Not always, but again it's more because there usually is more than one god of winter. Slavs, for an instance, have a god of Winter sunlight, Hors, who is quite obviously one of the most "good" goods of their pantheon. At the same time, though, Mara, the goddess of death and about the most negative one is also associated with winter.

>Neutral fire gods (seriously, it's all either BURN BURN BURN TO THE GROUND or PRAISE THE BRINGER OF LIIIIIIIGHT)
It's usually both, fire of the heath is usually something very different from a fire that burns down villages in folk imagination.

Here is a fun combination that I've noticed people to be surprised by, yet is very historical:
(Male) god of fertility, spring, abundance, bloom of flowers, and also... war. Supposedly a pretty good guy.

>>
>>43898839
Surprisingly, no.
Weirder. Slavs. And there is actually more than one of them: Jarilo and Svetovid.
Aztecs had some fucked up gods of their own, though. Very few other cultures had fertility gods demanding sacrifices of children whose nails were torn out (because the sacrifice only works when the child cries a lot), occasionally then be eaten by his own parents...
>>
>>43898908

Only propaganda from Christian missionaries.
>>
>>43900077
Not really, no. Archeological evidence supports pretty much all of it. The only part that was really exaggerated by the missionaries was the sheer size and scope of the rituals: they severally overstated the volume of the sacrifices happening. The child sacrifices, including some of the really gruesome details: we have evidence for that, including the graves, down to human teeth marks on the children bones. I'm specifically talking about the ritual sacrifices to Tlaloc in particular. You can look up the sources your self, if you want. Admitedly, Tlaloc was more of a rain and storm diety than a fertility one, though the two were deeply inteconnected, for understandable reasons.

No reason a moon god can't be lawful good. The moon changes in constant rhythm - full to new to full once more. It governs the water, and by studying it, you can predict how the waters will flow. And it is good - the light in the darkness, shining upon the wicked who would skulk through the night.

As for male or female - do as thou wilt. I see no reason why Gods need a sex.
