How would you go about running a game in the Castlevania verse? What system would you use? Any specific game or era in the time line seem interesting to you?
>>
Depends on what sort of game you're going for. With the rise of the dread castle Castlevania, would the players be villagers or low-level guards struggling to survive against the cursed night, or would they be all-mighty hunters, the lone beacons of light in the unending dark?
>>
>>43878890
Wouldn't Ravenloft work pretty much perfectly? It would be a gigantic magic castle instead of a plane, and the final boss would be Dracula, but I'm not sure it needs any other changes.
>>
Do I have to be a Belmont?

Does it have to be Castlevania itself?
>>
>>43879167
Not necessarily, Just needs to be in the castlevania universe. Either during the Rise of Dracula's Castle or some plot of the surviving minions in between his century long slumbers.
>>
>>43879411
but what if I prefer the LoS universe?

LoS 1 is a pretty cool setting for generic fantasy adventures. I can respect your opinion if you were referring to that.

LoS 2 on the other hand...
>>
>>43881805
To be honest, I would enjoy LoS a lot more if they didn't put the Castlevania trappings on it. Then I'd enjoy it more as a gothic GoW clone without the nagging feeling of it just piggybacking off a franchise with a soundtrack and art direction I adore.

The most important question though. Which Belmont is best husbando, and why is it Juste?
>>
>>43881927
Lords of Shadow by itself wouldn't be that bad a game; it'd be the same as any other third-person action game. The problem is, like Star Fox Adventures, it has the Castlevania name attached to it, so it struggles under that moniker.
>>
>>43881805
You would think the premise of Dracula versus Satan would produce a better game, but I guess not.

But it seems it was mostly just standard Dungeon World fair, just with a push for certain more thematically appropriate classes like Paladin and Witch.

To be fair, all the Belmonts are related to Dracula.

In Legends, Sonia Belmont, the original Belmont and vampire hunter, teamed up with Alucard out of a mutual hatred for Dracula, they fell in love, and had a child.

Castlevania RPG would kinda suck unless you're playing while Dracula is banished.

You're playing against a being second only to god, but only one player in the party can actually do anything against him all because of a single feat he took at character creation giving him an artifact weapon and the last name that comes with it.
>>
>>43882805
What?
None of the Belmonts are related to Dracula, and Sonia isn't canon unfortunately since the creators retroactively decided no Belmont protag can be female before the 1900's at the least.

Well the entirety of Curse of Darkness happened while Drac was banished. And plenty of note worthy things happened then.
>>
>>43882865
Not entirely true. John Morris, the Texan from Bloodlines, was able to wield the Vampire Killer. Because he wasn't a full-blooded Belmont, however, it slowly killed him in the process. In effect, by using the Vampire Killer too much, John died.
Of course, just because other humans don't have access to the Vampire Killer or Belmont blood flowing in their veins doesn't mean they can't devise ways to battle Dracula.

Pic related.
>>
>>43882943
Plus, Jonathan wasn't a Belmont and he and Charlotte did just fine in vanquishing ol' Drac. Hell, Jonathan didn't even need to use the whip to do it, and the fight is entirely doable with just Charlotte.

Hey now, if the Belmonts are a clan, who's to say there can only be one of them at a time going adventuring? I say the family that slays together, stays together.

Also, there are Castlevania where you don't play as a Belmont. Pic related.

And,, hell, see >>43882805. The original Belmont wasn't some special destined hero. She was just some peasant girl who got really pissed off at Dracula for fucking up her village. Those after her follow her legacy, but others can be made.

Pretty sure he canonically uses the whip to defeat Dracula, but your point still stands.

There's also Alucard defeating him, and Soma technically defeated him. There are plenty of ways you could set up a Castlevania plot without requiring Belmonts, though the option of playing a Belmont and wielding the whip would be neat.

>>43882998
>Also, there are Castlevania where you don't play as a Belmont. Pic related.
Actually, Shanoa kinda-sorts cheats at this. The villagers Shanoa rescues throughout the game are all Belmont descendents. Because she hangs around them so much, Shanoa - put bluntly - has the Belmont essence rub off on her, making her a Belmont by proxy.

What? Why on earth can Circle of the Moon not be cannon? They're not belmont's and even go over how they can't actually defeat Dracula only delay him. It does nothing to change any Castlevania Lore. It's just a fun foot note
>>
>>43883033
Soma IS him.
More specifically, he's the good part of Dracula's soul who defeats the bad part. All the energy and magic and shit that was Dracula remained, and now exists as a mantle waiting for a new master with Dracula now being a title rather than the assumed alias of Mathias.
>>
>>43883072
Graham was also Dracula though (along with the two jobbers from DoS) which is what I mean by Soma technically "defeating" Dracula. You could run an entire game around the Aria plotline, with all the PCs being reincarnations of Dracula. Might end in PVP but I could see it being a cool concept.
>>
>>43883070
Koji Igarashi didn't have anything to do with it, so it was made non-canon. He also stamped non-canon on both N64 Castlevania games.

He didn't give a reason for that, the only one he gave a reason for is Legends and because he felt it was inappropriate for a female protagonist in the time period she was in. Which interestingly means he didn't have a problem with Alucard being a father of the Belmonts past her, just that a Belmont with a whip in medieval times had a vagina.

Of course, they booted him so they could shrug and make it canon again if they stopped making LoS. Then again, they kind of swore off making anything not a Pachinko or iPhone game so probably not.

Then again, Koji made a not-Castlevania called Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night which stars a cute grill so he may of rethought it.

In theory, you'd want to gain the Power of Domination somehow. That allows you to kill monsters and make their souls your to use as minions.

The Power of Domination is alchemical, and is a trait that somehow becomes infused into your being. Mathias knew it, which is how he became Dracula; he trapped the soul of a powerful vampire then basically killed everything supernatural he could find other than god and the non-fallen angels.

He taught it to two "Devil Forgemasters", who kept his monsters occupied while he was trying to play nice with humanity and god, then he sent them to lead his armies.

The babies who were born when his soul was ripped from his "Dracula" persona also got it.

So basically you need to become a badass alchemist or be born at the exact moment he's killed. Top points for if he teaches you how.
>>
Two possibilities:

If you want a lot of room for character improvement and build-craft, use Runequest 6.

If you want to just be simple but have all the rules you need for vampires and what not, use Vampire: The Dark Ages.

Of the two, I would much rather play in a game done with Runequest, though.

>Liking LoS

my nigga{/spoiler]

In all seriousness, LoS did have a pretty neat world. Yeah it was super serious and melodramatic all the time and there was that one really stupid Portal reference near the end but it was a genuinely cool world. Letting a party of the Brotherhood of Light explore the Land of the Dead or Agharta isn't a bad idea, although you'd basically just be running standard fantasy no. 256.

But at the end of the day standard fantasy no. 256 features an ancient civilization of Werewolves who built and rode Giant Stone Mechs, and a Necromancer who teaches other people to be necromancers by killing them and controlling their bodies through necromancy, and Dr. Frankenstein also inventing Time Travel because electricity and also reasons.

So not a bad plan. Make it a 13th Age campaign, that system is designed from the ground up for sorta-serious whacky fun.

Simon gets points for killing Dracula more than anyone else, while fighting at a major handicap due to magical corruption.

Something sexy as hell, I'd say. I've run a game for an all-female college group where the party was basically Vampirella, Lady Death, Jade and the Assassin from D2. You could have a fun game where four women are lured to the castle to defeat Dracula, while fighting down the temptation to become his bride/brides. (Interestingly enough, this comes up quite a bit in a Ravenloft scenario, where Strahd is trying to figure out which of the female PCs is Tatayana.)
>>

I think there's a connection here.

Okay, let's assume Sonya Belmont existed, but isn't responsible for the main Belmont family. She falls in love with Adrian, Dracula's vampiric son, and bears him a child.

This child's connection to Dracula is believed to taint him, and Sonya and her son are cast out of the Belmont family. Believing Adrian's blood not to taint her child, but exalt him, Sonya takes the surname Adrian used with her, and bequeaths him the spear he gave her.

Thus the Lecarde family splits off from the Belmonts, while remembering their founder, A. Lecarde.

It doesn't actually matter if there's a Belmont or not. There have been games like PoR where there wasn't a Belmont around in the first place. Anyone with a link to the Belmont clan can use the Vampire Killer at the cost of their own life-force, and sufficiently powerful magic can also impede Drac (like PoR and OoE). A Belmont isn't absolutely 100% required to put a manifestation of Dracula down, it's just a lot harder without one.

>>43888573
Not sure if you mean a specific single character or method of character generation. If you mean in terms of generating PCs, I'd give options for Belmont (pure), Belnades (pure), Lecarde (pure) then Belmont (offshoot), Belnades (offshoot), Lecarde (offshoot), then in addition to those options for a generic magical and generic monstrous origin.

I think the trade-off for playing an offshoot branch would be that although the initial buy-in is lower using the skills from the clan is less efficient in terms of resources, and you start with a lower level of abilities. However you'd also be able to diversify more in terms of your overall character skills.

I think it'd be neat for those who aren't connected to the Belmonts and others to still be able to storm the castle and beat Dracula's ass. Granted, you ostensibly won't have it as easy as the Belmonts do (as if they had it easy in the first place), but you can still conceivably do it.
>>
>>43888665
There are characters like Charlotte Aulin and Jonathan Morris but even they have connections to the Belnades and Belmont clans, respectively. The intention behind magical and monstrous origins would be to give the option for PCs like Shanoa and Soma Cruz.

Would you want a PC totally independent from all of that? Is there a single one that fits into that criteria in the series so far?

I guess there's like Grant Danasty, although he doesn't defeat Dracula and additionally the surname might derive from a cadet branch of the actual House of Basarab, which would mean he did have a bloodline connection to Dracula too.

I feel like just playing some rando who goes and fights Dracula without magic or any of the clan weapons is kind of contrary to how the series plays out.
>>
>>43888702
Considering that weird prophecy of "no Belmont can wield the Vampire Killer until 1999" or something, it's interesting how many loopholes people figure out, as it still falls to bloodline powers that allow them to challenge Castlevania (Morris, Soma, etc.). The one true outlier appears to be Shanoa, but then again, see >>43883036.
>>
>>43888726
Even if you don't accept that the glyph used to destroy Dracula in OoE is literally made from his remains and possesses his own powers. I think (as with magic) using Dracula's own blood/powers against him is another exception to the "must be a Belmont" rule.

The families are effectively classes/archetypes.

Belmont is whip and subweapon users.
Belnades/Fernandez are mages.

The offshoots are people of those classes who didn't want to be part of the main family.
>>
>>43888758
Exactly. You must have some connection to Belmont power (Morris) or Dracula power (Shanoa, Soma) to get away with it.
>>
>>43888787
I wonder if Charlotte could do it.

Her ability to bind monster souls to her book is pretty similar to Shannoa and Soma.

I've always wanted to become an ubermench and design and produce a castlevania esque game that combines elements of the linear castlevanias difficulty and the igavania's non linearity, and it would star a home maker in training waif who is afraid of everything, but over the course of the game, learns to not afraid of anything.

You know I actually really want a weeaboo dark fantasy game. I'm not sure how to explain it properly, but I think my reason for wanting is basically it's just an area that Japan's made quite a strong showing in.

I don't exactly want a Castlevania game. I want a mix-up of Castlevania, Dark/Demon's Souls, Bloodborne, Tenchu, Onimusha, Vagrant Story, Nier, Drakengard, Dragon's Dogma, Crimson Shroud, Guin Saga and Berserk.
>>
>>43891737
Just say you want "dark fantasy" and worry about the Japanese-esque trappings later.
>>
>>43891790
No, because they're a really specific part of what I want and its aesthetic. There's not a lot of Western dark fantasy (especially in vidya) that I would rate equivalently, and where it does exist it often doesn't have the same style or the same way of panning out. I suppose The Marquis might be a good example of a comic that would fit with this style of things though.

I've thought about how I would do this game - like how I would divide up character types that fit all the potential PCs in each of those games. Like you could have 'The Marked', someone who has lost something to the monsters that nonetheless empowers them. That works equally well for Guts in Berserk and the Arisen in Dragon's Dogma.
>>
>>43891881

What is there is Dark Souls that really has any weeaboo overtones beyond the occasional Katana in the games?

I feel that Dark/Demon's Souls is very much a product of its environment - in some ways I actually see it as a modern successor to classic Metroidvanias (although to some extent Vagrant Story can be seen as this as well). I can't really see it getting made in the West, which incline more to games like Skyrim or the Witcher series.

I don't feel it having the look of Western fantasy, visually, means it's not a Japanese game.

How would a sentient Babylonian war golem end up in Wallachia? Was it one of Dracula's leftover experiments, trying to convert the golem to its service?

In fact, that's what I'm going for. The golem was taken by Dracula's agents from Babylon and brought to the castle in an attempt to convert it for use by the Lord of Darkness. Before the process could be completed in any fashion, Dracula got his shit wrecked, and the castle fell apart. The golem is still there, still preserved and safe from corruption.
>>
>>43893870
As for their reasons being there in the first place, both were sent individually to stamp out whatever evil has crept across Europe, for fear of the evil spreading to the rest of the world.
