It's mostly because there is literally no need for this to be done save you want to turn a rabbit into a typewriter. Things like trophy heads or full-stuffings are fine by me, because you are displaying the value of the thing you've killed, as is taking parts of an animal for use in other areas, but this machine was made purely because somebody thought it would be funny with absolutely no benefit to its existence.

I kill and eat animals and take trophies to show off my skill, but I feel a level of respect for the animal in the sense that it was a living thing and should not be treated with cruelty just for the hell of it.

Because Europeans did an absolutely fucking terrible job at attempting to fix the problems caused by their Imperialism, and the South Africans couldn't and wouldn't fix their own problems by themselves, so they follow the route of their European ancestors and said, "Fuck it, we're done" and then just left a giant mess behind, except this time the US didn't try to step in and pick up the pieces like they did in Latin America and Asia.

>>43875346
Dude, I don't know how hard you've been redpilled, but South Africa was so racist that a Southern Plantation owner would have moral qualms about their practices towards black Africans during the course of their existence, from their murderous slave raids on the native tribes where they killed all the men and took the woman and children into "apprenticeships" (i.e. slavery), to the fact that they were directly excluded from all aspects of governance and education opportunities in any meaningful way, and outcast to the corners of society after a failed attempt to completely and totally eradicate their people and their culture at the systemic level with total foreign acceptance.

I wonder if you realize that life was far more hellish before the whites arrived? And if as you say, it's the white man's responsibility to uplift Africans, then surely there must be a hierarchy?

Or maybe what you're saying is bullshit, and an uncultured and violent people are merely reaping what they sow. The real question you should be asking is why there are any white people left in in SA at all

allright, redpill bullshit aside. Even if you assume that the had no civilization (something not all that true, it was very barbaric but still one), there is no good reason to come somewhere with superior technology, more advanced culture and say "fuck these people, we dont allow them anything from education to freedom" and then expect nothing to happen when your remove the apartheid. It doesn't pull punches when it comes to describing the actions and societies of both the Africans and the Europeans (as well as the Muslims), and goes into great detail describing their histories together.

Africa was a completely different collection societies compared to European ones, and had their merits and their criticisms in large numbers (human sacrifice and the slave trade across the entire continent being one) but it also explains why those things happened in Africa, and then how Europe came and often just royally fucked over the locals when they attempted to start colonies, but how they actually weren't that influential besides supplying guns and trade goods in most nations until the Scramble for Africa.

I'm very skeptical of revisionist history myself, and more often than not everything is highly exaggerated to push a specific agenda, but South Africa was just legitimately that bad.

>>43875630
That is a lie. They settled in Khoisan herding grazing territory, and then cheated them out of their territory until the Khoisans had virtually no room left for their herding practices, which understandably upset some people. The Afrikaaners responded by murdering them until the fled, as well as taking their women and children as "apprentices" in their cities, and forcing them to live and work as wage slaves in the diamond mines for a long, long time, all under British sanction despite their ban on slavery. South Africa White Man's Burdened themselves so that they could justify their practices to the British, and the British accepted it because they wanted diamonds on the cheap and a safe port.

Here are a few things that would not happen:
1. The borders would not be so fucked up, so there would be less cultural wars from two tribes being forced together or having their lands stolen
2. Most of the recourses would not be privatized by Europeans
3. The people would not be set back from years of being teated like animals or exterminated
4. Slave trade would probably not be so big (albeit african warlords did take part in it so it would be still there)
5. More land would be owned by the african people allowing for a more stabilized growth and a larger part of the population leaving the nomadic type of life and starting farming
6. Less biological destruction

Africa would be behind europe and the USA, but not by such a bloody margine

Whether or not you think the system was as good as its forebears is not the argument being made. The game's non-fighting aspects revolve around a mechanic that let you roleplay a character and their interactions with the world around them, and that world around them reacts to your interactions. This is, pretty much by its descriptive definition, an RPG.

>4. Slave trade would probably not be so big (albeit african warlords did take part in it so it would be still there)
>6. Less biological destruction

I'm going to contend these two points, though I otherwise agree with you. The African Slave Trade existed because labor was one of the most difficult commodities to acquire in Africa, as their populations were routinely decimated by famine and disease because it's Africa (seriously, Africa has always been under-populated because so much of it is dangerous to make permanent long-term settlements in and the climate changes on a dime), and it was so endemic to their societies that it was almost entirely done by small-time individuals or outfits dealing in small batches of slaves, rather than the major outfits like the Dutch and Portuguese would employ, and most European records of slave purchases record that fact. This meant that quite literally everybody was doing it, and even more people did it in Africa when the British banned the Atlantic Slave Trade and instead demanded high-labor goods like diamonds, palm oil, and yams, all of which are very labor intensive. This meant that slavery was still indirectly condoned by Europe, and still voluntarily employed by Africans until European demands for those products dried up and it no longer became economically feasible to keep slaves, which would have taken way, way longer to accomplish had Europeans not at least done some uplifting in their rape of the continent.

Biodiversity was actually a negative thing for the African people, as most animals carried lethal human diseases or were Elephants, which dominated the continent so much that until the early 1950's they were overpopulated and constantly overran towns and farms. The British flat-out gave away free rifles and put fifty Pound bounties on elephant tusks in an attempt to cull the elephant populations, but it still didn't work until we finally developed big enough guns to deal with them.

Your character can join factions and help them, or chose to leave them to their devices. You can build in owned territory and there are followers who grow up around you. Some grow to love you, some interact with the world based on your desires. Some have personal quests that you need to help them with. And at the end of the day when you say something--and you can choose to say something--there are people who interact and respond. You are playing a role.

Whether or not you think that system is executed well is not the argument. You're playing a role and there are mechanics that allow you to express your character's desires and will. And the world will respond to that. Whether or not you think it's a good response or a big response again, doesn't really matter. You're given mechanics for playing a role, it's a role-playing game.

anon, you're delusional

Without European involvement, Africa would still be completely under developed. There would still be wars, slavery, and violence, but there would be none of the modern technology, infrastructure, political systems, and social institutions that make Africa what it is today.

The only thing I can agree with you on is resource control. International corps have African governments by the balls until things get so chaotic that civil wars force out corporate interests. Whether or not Africans would make wise use of these resources is debatable, but having control of them would at least empower them a little more.
>>
>>43876201
If your actions are not reflected on the world in any way all you are doing is playing a glorified action game. Now the interaction can be minor, Planescape for example has little interaction with the outside world but a shit ton within your party and things, depending on your choices, play out VERY differently. The reason we have a division between RPGs and action/hackandslash games is that RPGs are sopse to put you into a role, and play out your interactions with the world, while action/hack and slash games just let you live out a pre-set story in which you may as well be a follower

This is a moved goalpost, dude. In Fallout 4 we could argue until the world ended on whether or not you make a world-changing difference.

But to compare F4 to Planescape, as you have, there are F4 characters and followers who have entire potential growth arcs that all either happen or don't happen depending on whether or not you take charge and play your role, potentially helping them through their arcs or leaving them to stagnate.

I don't think that F4 had a good ropeplaying mechanic. But that mechanic was there, and whether or not many characters--including your BBEG child--live, die, grow, stagnate, love, or hate depend on you and the choices you make. And you have those choices. You can romance, you can spare. You can take someone with you and watch them grow organically through mechanics and personality. Or you can leave them at your house and watch them just sit there. It all falls on your will.

This is an RPG. You're not led entirely by the nose, and if you count the main plot as "not an RPG" because it's somewhat railroady, then we really need to redefine your idea of an RPG to "any RPG that's not a videogame," because they ALL have predetermined plots.

You are playing a role in F4, and it has a lot of mechanics that let you do so. It's an RPG.

im not saying it would be good, im saying it would be better. Modern technology makes it way everywhere one way or the other, it may take longer, so do political systems. Africa was taken from the hands of its people, play around with and then given back broken and with systems that the people did not understand how to work with, moreover no instruction manual was left. Im not saying "africa was so happy and advanced before teh evil white man came and set us back 1000000000000000000000000000000 years and stole our technology" im saying "we fucked up bad in African and still refuse to take the blame for it, even though we are the main culprits". The africans were denayed a very important part of their history, the one where they start developing because they see how much more beneficial it is to killing everything that dose not run away faster.

>we fucked up bad in African and still refuse to take the blame for it

Well, plenty of keks do blame themselves for it, but they shouldn't, because colonization objectively made Africa a better place. As bad as it is now, it was much worse in the past, and if Europeans never got involved it would still be that bad.

>Modern technology makes it way everywhere one way or the other

You're wrong about that. It travels via people and so is subject to how those people think. There are a lot of historical examples of technologies failing to spread through established trade routes. And it's not just technology, it's infrastructure, social systems and institutions. Most African nations are nominal democracies now btw. The spread of Christianity in Africa is probably the biggest benefit of colonization, the church does a tremendous amount of good. It's extremely unlikely that Africa would have developed into modern states by now if they were never colonized.

That's true. There's slightly better chance the bullet will pass through you without fragmenting when you're naked than when you're dressed.

>>
>>43879011
In a first world country military where you can get medical attention nearly immediately there's no difference. If you don't have field medics and even working hospitals it's very easy for gunshots to be infected by the threads of filthy cloth getting into the wound so you are better off naked. This is also why some tribes as far north as the British Isles went to battle naked.

Except your choice at the end of the main quest literally changes the balance of power forever in the Commonwealth. Who you decide to side with dictates the culture of the area including whether synths/mutants/ghouls are accepted, shunned, or hunted down and killed. You absolutely change the wasteland forever, either by making it a military dictatorship, a cyberpunk dystopia, or an NCR-esque 'doing the best we can' proto-government. The fact you don't realize this indicates to me that you haven't played the main quest all the way to the end.

It's certainly a more impactful ending than the one in F3, which was really a choice between 'poison everyone' and 'give clean drinking water to everyone', which whilst important, didn't do anything to affect the kind of preeminent culture that existed in the Capital Wasteland.

The only extra thing F:NV had was a concluding Ron Perlman speech going through all of the communities you touched and how they had been affected, but you shouldn't need this kind of thing laid out for you, the effects are pretty easy to figure out.
