Fuck it, starting a thread for this in the hopes that you guys could help an uncreative hack like myself out. About to run a fantasy quest where the players have to decide which of two warring races to support in defeating the other and was wondering exactly what to make the two be. Was initially going to go with angels and demons, which despite barely being a step up in originality from elves and the like, definitely creates some bias when they're supposed to be morally equal and the choice comes down to personal views and preference. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Advanced militarised society that conquers and enslaves the conquered, bit still brings technological and cultural advancement, as well as safety and well-being of a member of their Empire
Second - more of a tribelike people, that are not too joufull about that being conquered idea - they do like their freedom, but on the other hand, some of their freedoms are disturbing (ie. a warrior after conquest can take - in a sexual meaning - women of their enemies.

And let the players decide who's the lesser evil

Go with Legend of the Galactic Heroes - big authoritarian empire that currently happens to have a really great and benevolent emperor but might and probably will not in future iterations, versus a big liberal republic that is great in principle but mired in corruption and special interest groups.

Halflings versus Centaurs.

Halflings couldn't take Centaurs in an open fight, but can use ambush tactics pit traps and tunnels to level the playing field. Fucking half pint viet cong.

Remember, it doesn't have to be original to be cool. There's a lot of storytelling power to using the classics, if you want to draw on that.

If you'd rather not: hive-people versus scholars
(interpret at will...e.g. hive people may or may not have physical insect properties, the scholars may be a clan of studious air mephits, whatever)
