...no way. Admittedly I'm no historical expert, but itsn't it commonly accepted that a lot of battlefield weapons are just enforced/repurposed farming implements?

Lindybeige is, literally, a larper who bullshits based on his larp experience.

I larp, but there's more than fucking 8 combatants on the field, and if I NEED to form an opinion on weapon handling, I turn to history or people who've done it, not my own ass.
>>
>>43840671

No he doesn't. If he did, he wouldn't be a Shit tier low-level youtuber
>>
>>43840898
Yeah. He grabbed a modern scythe and said that it wouldn't work as a weapon. Fucking hard science, man.
>>
>>43840726
He said that using farming scythes in combat wasn't common because they are ineffective.

He addressed war scythes and pointed out the obvious fact that they are to farming scythes what a tank is to a tractor.
>>
>>43840917
It's hard to be critical of larpers when you are on TG.

Which is kind of wrong given how weaponized farming scythes were used successfully multiple times in history. Which Lindybeige would know if he ever worked with historical sources.

>routinely cites primary sources in his videos
And you're going off of... what, exactly to claim he doesn't know his shit?
>>
>>43841067
It isn't that LARPers are bad. It's that he uses his LARP experience and tries to make very broad historical statements. He tries to punch very far over his weight level. Sometimes, he can be fairly insightful, but you need to pile salt into your mouth with everything he says.
>>
>>43841076
Yes and those were modified. Jesus christ did you just ragequit at the intro of the video? The whole thing is talking about how an unmodified scythe is shit, and if you owned a scythe you would know that.
>>
>>43841078
He has a shitty british accent that makes him sound like a low life thug. Lindybeige has a smart british accent.
>>
>>43841067
No it isn't. I larp. I have for ten years.

Larpers tend to be fucking morons who don't understand that what they are doing is far divorced form combat.

I CAN tell you how exactly wearing a full face helm affects hearing, vision, communication, and sweating.
I've done that.

I wouldn't try to explain how a man with a sword and shield would engage a man with a spear based off it, because my "experience" is literally imaginary.

I'd turn to roman period depictions, because that actually happened.

Are we talking about the same video? He said that to make scythe work you need to replace both blade and the handle and you would be way better using a pitchfork.
>>
>>43841126
To be fair artistic depictions can be bullshit too.
>>
>>43841119
If you think that's a shitty English accent, you have no idea of what lurks here.
>>
>>43841126
So your idea is that if your interest started with larping that anything you find or say later is invalid?

Well in any case I still find him entertaining. I know from time to time he's wrong about shit but he's still better than half the windowlickers you will talk to here.
>>
>>43841152
I remember in the comment section someone saying a pitchfork would be more effective.

Also you would definitely have to replace the blade of a scythe, those things are weak as shit. They could be used effectively as a murder weapon but I wouldn't want to use them in a battle against more than one guy.
>>
>>43841174
No, if you are pulling your info FROM larping-which he does fairly often, especially when talking about shields-it's probably fucking bullshit.

>he's still better
No, he's just as bad as the people on here. Doesn't know a thing, doesn't know he doesn't know, and speaks with authority because he played a game.
>>
>>43841174
No, that's completly ok. The problem is that Lindybeige never really wend beyond it.
>>
>>43841119
You should probably broaden your horizons past a mix of "bridge on the river kwai" and "lock stock and two smoking barrels."
>>
>>43841174
That's not at all what he's saying you fucking idiot. Read. Read the post. Understand the words he wrote. Those glyphs that sometimes interrupt your Pornography are letters, and they have meaning if you decipher them. If you manage to do that then you're already head and shoulders above lindybeige.

Lindybeige isn't bad because he got interested in history through LARP. He's bad because he bases all of his opinions and ideas on experience he gained through LARPing. Not through period sources, not through anyone with anything even remotely training, but by fucking around on weekends pretending to be a hoplite. That's perfectly fine, if he sticks to that as his hobby. More power to him. But instead, he uses his experience to say absolutely retarded things about history that can be disproved by reading even a basic overview or looking at any kind of period art.
>>
>>43841259
I think you're a really fun guy.
>>
>>43841259
The frustrating part is, it's not even close to an actual experience.

He has videos of his larping on his page.

It's 8v8, single fucking rank, and they're 4+ feet apart.

THIS HAS NO BEARING ON HOPLITE COMBAT.

From this he surmises that it's impossible to defend your legs with a shield that uses straps. Because he can't.

I can tell you how to disrupt a column of guys going to reinforce some other part of the field when you are smaller than them...
Because I've done it, I've seen the SCA do it in large scale, and i've seen ukranians do it to cops in real life. And because it's not an experience unique to a set time period or method of fighting.

Okay, well I'm convinced, it won't stop me from watching him but I will place his information value definitively under skall.
>>
>>43841356
He's definitely entertaining, I'll give him that. And he sometimes has some nice things to say. His stuff on torches, for instance, was pretty solid because his experience is actually applicable.

But he'd be so much better if he read a fucking book.
>>
>>43841168
Are you suggesting that some toff hired by a nobleman to make a war painting based on rough description doesn't know what he is doing?
>>
>>43841206
If you replace the blade you are stuck with a fucking stick. By this logic a broomstick is a weapon because you can duct-tape a knife on the end of it.
No, you can use scythe as a weapon as it was done before by peasant militias through history up to XX century. It's not particularly good weapon but it's definitely a solid choice, all that you need to do is hammer the blade upwards.

Some people are just meant to be bald. I think he's one of them.

I know a few people that spend most of their lives bald, but when they grow their hair out occasionally they quickly realize it makes their heads look wrong.

Kinda like how some people look better with glasses.

>Actually defends the Imperial System and despises the Système Internationale because it's "too French"
His main point behind backing Imperial is because it was used to measure amounts common to the household and the trade, and measure lengths reasonable to humanity. If someone is 6' or taller, they are tall - this is common knowledge. Off the top of your head, does metric have a similar cutoff point? You certainly know what a pint looks like, but what about 473 ml screams "drink size"?

The French bit was obviously a joke.
>>
>>43843664
>Some people are just meant to be bald. I think he's one of them.

>Off the top of your head, does metric have a similar cutoff point? You certainly know what a pint looks like, but what about 473 ml screams "drink size"?
Barging in to bring some perspective. 180cm is generally considered tall, and because I never lived with the imperial system, I have no clue what a pint is.

Humans are adaptable enough to use either system and will probably be more comfortable with whatever they grew up with. The internal consistency gives the metric system an edge though.
>>
>>43843666
>does metric have a similar cutoff point?
About 180 for men, I'd say. This "le convenient maymay" needs to stop. Not only is what's considered tall variable by culture (compare Netherlands and Japan).

>but what about 473 ml screams "drink size"?
Add a negligible 27ml and you have a "drink size". Another thing that is culturally variable.

For a system that's convenient for trade, it certainly relies on everyone having the same cultures and customs. It may have worked centuries ago when dirt farmers were trading a hand of shit for a stone of piss with people who lived no further than one village away, but in a globalized world this is incredibly backwards. A more objective measurement system like the SI makes more sense. Especially when literally everyone except America and Liberia (fucking Liberia of all countries) has adopted it. Even Myanmar is currently switching to the SI.

>The French bit was obviously a joke.
Poe's law, you can never be too sure.

There are no recorded instances of John Silver ever finishing a duel. Either the Italian opponent ignored him or the duels had to stop for some reason.

the huge ass ship known as vasa sank because of a lot of things but one of the most imortant things were that inces are different lenghts in different countries and the dutch carpenters that helped build the ship used their own inch lenght instead of the swedish inch so the construction is all kinds of fucked up
>>
>>43843896

Why does America still use the Imperial system?
>>
>>43845266
The same reason we don't consider soccer a men's sport or higher education a human right. You need inconveniences in life to keep you on your toes. A perfectly oiled machine needs no mechanic.
>>
>>43845266
When it was new, it would have been a huge expensive pain in the ass to transition our whole manufacturing base over. Now, we're slowly transitioning anyway but changing it officially would b e like saying "Europe was right, we were wrong" so it won't happen for another generation or two. Certainly not until everyone primarily uses metric anyway.
>>
>>43844622
My understanding was that killing a man in a duel at the time could get you hung in England and was inadvisable in Scotland due to potentially starting clan wars, so they were usually to first blood.

Also, what's with calling him John Silver? I thought it was George Silver unless the wordfilter's been fucking with us again.
