I'm trying to pick a tabletop rpg system for a game I want to run. Looking to do a sort of private military group that uses relatively near future weapons and most importantly mechs, trying to avoid crazy space tech but stuff like energy weapons and primative cybernetic augments are fine. Thinking like an early deus ex or gits style setting. I'm primarily familiar with d20 and d10 systems and I'm competent enough to adapt material to what I need, just looking for a strong basis from which to start. Any recommendations?
GURPS
Standard pitch for GURPS, Savage Worlds or FATE depending on your preference for simulationist, pulp action, or narrative based core systems.

it's a shame that game turned out to be so generic, I loved the art and the Mech designs.

Heavy Gear. Despite being set far in the future the tech is actually near future for the most part. Mechs use rockets, cannons, mortars, autocannons, guided missiles etc. There's a few energy weapons but they're pretty rare in the setting.
Also there are 3 other settings which run on the same system (Jovian Chronicles, Gear Krieg and Tribe 8) from which you can lift additional material.
Here's a mega link with almost every book.

I second, it's a good system if deadly system.

A few tweaks for the player characters can calm it down a bit. Change "Instant Death" for "Critical Wound" is a common one, gives players a chance to drag each other to the evac chopper.

Remnants is a good one- default setting is an interesting post-apocalyptic world. Default tech is stone tools for most people, but a handful of scouting mechs designed to self-repair have survived and can make or break a tribal leader's power. Of course you can easily re fluff it for a more modern world.
Classes are a little imbalanced- melee is way better than ranged or drone mechs.
I'm only two sessions into it, but I've been playing Hero System and it would be great for this.

Also has some non-humanoid walkers if you aren't into the more human form mecha.
