Trying to homebrew a Fallout setting based in NYC, and stupidly, I know nothing about what to make of it (NYC that is)
What the hell would NYC in the falloutverse be if not simply leveled?
>hey /tg/ I'm excited about [NEW MEDIA PROPERTY] and want to play a game in [NEW MEDIA PROPERTY] because I like [NEW MEDIA PROPERTY].
You should just play [NEW MEDIA PROPERTY] instead, because by the time you actually get around to finishing your planning, you'll be bored with [NEW MEDIA PROPERTY] and will have already moved on to [NEWER MEDIA PROPERTY].

>new
by golly you're right, let me just go work on my undertale homebrew instead
god forbid i ask /tg/ about something /tg/ related

An irradiated warzone of concrete, rebar, and broken glass. The shattered ruins of the old-world skyscrapes hold vast cashes of scavengable technology and resourses, but the unstable towers might collapse at any minute, and you're not the only one after the wealth they hold.
Also, obligatory mutated central park shenanigans.

ThE 5 boroughs are separate factions
There be monsters in our massive subway lines
Hell if portions are settler in ala metro
I believe they're almost completely flood proof
Boats are a big thing
Trading union

I was thinking maybe pic related for the scope, although I'm extremely clueless when it comes to New York. numbers do not indicate order that i'd include them, just, other than 1 i'm not sure which to include
Broadway perhaps is controlled by a faction of Vault fuckers who were originally edgy roleplayers and actors who were subjected to affirming their fantasy of choice was real so now the whole place is just fucked right the hell up with basically LARPers
>>43807289
i like monsters, but i'm nixing super mutants because they don't make sense outside of DC anymore
i like trading union, was thinking some sort of raider/reformed pirate faction holed up on liberty/ellis island

>I believe they're almost completely flood proof
Doesn't NYC rely on pumps running constantly to keep the water out of the subways?
I thought I read that if all the people died, the subways would be flooded within 48 hours because no one would be maintaining the pumps.
Well if you're sticking to the lore then NYC and the surrounding area is a giant radioactive hole in the ground. It got nuked to hell and back and then back to hell.

Lore says jack all about NYC iirc.
>>43808771
Now that I've looked into it, you're correct, not much has been said about it other than a near meltdown at a reactor prior to the great war. Not sure where I'd heard it was completely gone.
NYC would absolutely have been right at the top of the priority target list though, so I would say it's reasonable to expect not to find much left.
Pic semi-related: real-life projection map of nuclear attack targets

and yet Washington DC, the SEAT OF THE US GOVERNMENT isnt in a bad shape
yes yes I know "Fuck Fallout 3, broke so much lore. Much tears."
There was a thread on /v/ a couple days back just discussing the lore of the games.
Some of the guys there seemed pretty up to snuff on their fluff, and according to that thread, New York or at least Manhattan is partially underwater. Like around 50 feet, so traversing the streets is not possible. Most of the buildings are fine though, so travel through the buildings should be possible. Could easily make them connected by bridges or toppled into one another, etc.
Alternatively another person who had some sources said it was flooded, but with a persistent cloud of extremely toxic radiation. Basically pre-war New York (or again, at least Manhattan) had a really big wall around it, and when the bombs went off the wall caused a lot of the passing fallout and toxic clouds to be caught in and concentrated by the walls. The end result is pretty much the same though, streets and lower levels are unlivable, but the rest of the buildings upper levels should be fine.

He has a point though. New fallout is flavor of the month right now regardless of how long the series has been around or how much you like it and aren't a bandwagoner. Regardless of the property we see this shit ALL THE TIME when new X game or movie comes around and it seems to drive a lot of us bonkers.
Essentially there are two steps you need to know before you just search up the relevant threads/fuck off/get bored and go play fallout.
1. Stuff about new york
2. GURPS

DC was in pretty bad shape but it definitely should have been worse. The problem with that is that moving around in the heart of the city was already a pain in the ass with the level of destruction we did see. If they had made it worse it would have been even more of a nightmare. Gameplay and hardware limitations will pretty much always trump lore. Same reason for why vaults can house a thousand people and yet we only ever see space for about 20.

>>43808931
i mean, yes, obviously most cities should be as LA but things in fallout follow far closer to a rule of cool rather than sense so anything standing is because the setting demands it
>>43809002
>manhattan had a really big wall around it
escapefromnewyork.jpg
there's no particular lore surrounding NYC unless i am really not remembering things correctly, so anything /v/ says is logistical rather than by the lore. underwater is a given though.
>>43809062
>there's no particular lore surrounding NYC
The thing is that I'm not a lore person, only played the later games, but I do seem to recall something about NY being enclosed by a wall and being a radioactive death trap filled with ghouls.
Could be wrong, but when I saw that being talked about, it wasn't the first time I remember that being a thing.
>>43809056
i understand his point but got defensive anyway because i think complaining about bandwagons is stupid, my mistake
>>43809107
New York has, according to the wiki, has/had a population 17 million, but that's all we know. A giant wall would make sense though, i'm just saying that that's the exact plot of Escape from New York.
>>43809158
Wouldn't be the first time they took inspiration from other media in Fallout.
>>43809219
...which is why i watched escape from new york to get ideas for the setting.
Better idea.
Fallout: Alaska
>survive in a frozen wasteland
>face polar yao guai
>deal with survivalists, cannibals, and a remnant Chinese occupation force
>shitloads of unused military surplus littering old battlefields
>commonwealth spies vs a resurgent enclave
Shit would be tight.
>>43810852
>resurgent enclave
hello bethesda
In all seriousness, this would be pretty good, though I struggle to comprehend why and how the Commonwealth would be involved.
>>43810905
They're the only thing I can think of relating to Canada in Fallout.
>>43810905
Only thing Canadian I can think of in Fallout.

The US of Fallout reformed into thirteen commonwealths instead of 51 states in uh 1969 I think.
