How can you guys like reading so much on this board? I like a good story as much as the next guy but you seem to be focused on quantity over quality.

My friend, do let me introduce you to the delicious concept of excess.
>>
>>43800027
You never know which story is going to pan out from the get go. Gotta read through the majority that's shit to find the minority that is worth keeping.
>>
>>43800027
It's pretty simple, really.
This is the internet. Expected quality is fixed at a 10:1 ratio of shit/not-shit. Focusing on improving quality reduces quantity while improving the ratio to, at best, 8:1.

By focusing on quantity, we experience a net gain in good works. 10% of one thousand is more than 50% of one hundred.

Plus, there's really no stopping shitty stories from happening. That's part of what makes them so shitty. Might as well roll with the inevitable and make the best of it.

I don't like reading unless its in a quit "browsing experience" that is what most reading in DnD books and Wargame "Codexs" is like. yes there is often lots of background history or fluff and generally I only read this stuff once and then just leave it in a space called "head cannon" as far as the fiction and scifibook side of this nerdom I do not take part in reading thous kinds of books because I beleave they are form a different era of human interaction and communication where we focused more on what we said and shared than what we actually experienced in the moment. due to this I do let my self stay up to date with some of the "expanded" fiction of these games buy lissening to podcast summing up fictional events such as GarrageHammers coverage of the EndTimes (which I must admit I read nagash at least) and as a sort of book club thin Garragehammers after ulinor Horus Heresy book recap podcast. while I think the podcasting medium is dieing right now with live streaming taking its spot and I do find most podcasts are droping in quality to no longer be like a radio show and more like a depressing personal social media experiment diary almost... but blame giant bomb for making in person. I do however love audiobooks and I like nothing more than lissening to a nice reassuring voice on cassette tape telling a story to me like im a child (yes this is a man-child fetish) but what I also do is of course Audiobooks on my PC as well.. and while I some times find the narrator talking to slow or too fast I have lissened to the entire Horus Heresy this way (arguably the largest fiction taking place in the tabletop world atm) I managed to get up to about 27 + side storys and while I don't think I comprehended as much as I would if I read it I think I got just as absorbed into the universe and of particular note the audio dramas helped alot to add a sense of emersion inbetween the some time 10 hour brakes of narration with slight voices some times.

I read alot on 1d4chan and I have read some bits of Warmachine and Age of sigmar but I think With Warmachine ill get into the world via the Video game and in Age of Sigmars case because the fiction is so new I will only read the overview posted on here to keep up to date with the big events and get all the details later (or maybe even in a video game?) I get what your saying about reading being a old medium and your 100% right that reading is probably what is holding back these hobbies right now and not the price of minis or game rules. but yer in Age of Sigmars case ive decided to read MYFROG which draws from a similar mythology and ill prob get into the influences of Age of Sigmar before I get into the core books them self ie ill focus on historicals and "legends" for a while.

the other main thing I read is White Dwarf but im going thru the entire history of it and im only up to about 54 or so out of 400+ now. the newer ones are ok but I know im in for the treat in the first 400.

I used to read Dragon magazine and I think Magazines used to be the lead in for Table Top gaming but now its video games.... which is depressing really and has caused such horrible releases as DnD4e and Canceling of things such as specialist games from GW.

the truth is that Tabletop gaming is not a unique experience you can simulate it exactly on a computer or with counters but reading is really a huge part of all non computer games. and even the earlier generations of computer games had lots of reading right up to about 2005 I would say. if you don't like reading and don't want to get better at it don't get into wargames or RPGS. but in this day and age its important to optimize you "hobby time" to absorb and read as much information as possible as quickly as possible and for this I recommend a good chat room like 3++ is the new black or using a site like /tg/ or a forum etc etcits hard to keep up I get it and getting into this hobby is intimidating but you get used to it

Both /tg/ and reading require and cultivate imagination. You can bet kids who read all day grow up to be imaginative RPers.

> quantity > quality
As a medium of expression, writing takes on very different qualities depending on the length of the work. Some ideas would never work as a novel, only as a short story, and vice versa. For certain themes and effects, a sense of grandeur or epic scale, you need a long-ass book.

but yer if you hate reading just go play magic instead. its the table top game that requires the least reading.

Wargames are dieing and so is Dnd because people don't read as much now. but its good in a way it means the comunitys in thous two games are very hyper intelligent and good at absorbing large amounts of information quickly. lots of the lazyer less enjoyable to play with gamers are switching to iPhone games and PC gaming hell you can even see it with the Xwing community Xwing is the newest and biggest sucssess in Table top gaming but its already totally simulated in Vassel a program to simulate table games and its so much better to play it that way that torniments are actually using Vassel rather than real minis and tables. but honestly Xwing is more about branding and perhaps the desire to "pirate" it and play it simulated like that is because people know they are just paying for the starwars licenece which they already have in their mind so they can just play on PC.. Wings series of games is not new and Wings of Glory and Wings of War where WW1 and WW2 miniature games of dog fights and personally im actually interested in them more than xwing and I might convert or make up a fleet of WW1/2 fighters out of 40k epic minis or converted stuff with imperial paint jobs.. that's another thing the collection aspect of these games requires some thing special and that's the choice of what "world' are your figures going to live in. Because of all the 'reading" many people are invested in one particular universe as a head cannon and they want all their minis from all games to sort of line up with that. for most that's 40k. but some are more into 30k or Warmachine or Hordes or Historicals or Cyberpunk etc etc. personally for example im into 30K/Gundam/HPlovecraft so I try and make all my collections have some thing from thous universes. so even if say im playing xwing or dystopian wars or historicals or bolt action or some thing I will use my 40k/30k

Codexes is also used.

I am actually more interested in fluff/setting than games themselves. I have trouble abstracting myself enough to role play.

Goddamn angloparlants shitting muh Latin
>>
>>43804981
It's not latin mate. It's 40k futuristic pseudo latin. A Codex is not the latin codex, it's a faction book of which the plural is Codexes, not Codices.

OP give me a story of quality or your argument is debunked.

m8, it's a shithole
>>
>>43804981
My native language is a romance language. This is irrelevant. We're not talking latin but English. And in English, Codexes can be used for the plural.

It'd be like correcting English words rooted in French to the correct French form. Unless we're actually speaking French, it only serves to show you don't know how conversation and lanaguage work.

Well, from the little I know of Russian literature, that really seems to be the trend they follow.
