God, I was driving at night not that long ago and I nearly ran some dipshit on a bike over because he was in the street and didn't have lights or reflectors on his bike. I didn't see the fucker until I was almost on him. Fucking bikefags, keep your god damn toys on the sidewalk, or follow the rules of the road like you're fucking supposed to when you're in the street.
>>

That was my entire point, that when they are in the street they are supposed to follow the same rules as motor vehicles, but I have never seen a bike fag that does. They cross against traffic, they don't signal, they U-turn, turn left on red, and do anything else that is expressly forbidden even when there are signs saying don't do the thing you are doing. Where I live bikefags think they are above the law.

Bicycles are used by some army scouts, giving them much better range and speed than a runner.
Civilizations will sink money into infrastructure and good roads to make the matioomn run smoother.
As soon as an engine is possible or, it WILL be strapped to the vehicles. Put a restriction on it so that they're harder to spread, like it needs an artifacer manning it

My personal favorite is there's a very busy main road going through the middle of town, there is a pavement that is marked as a cycle path next to it.

Guess how many retards cycle on the road rather than the cycle path 1 meter to their side? Particularly at night without lights/reflectors?

While I may concede that we as a socity OVERUSE the automobile. Some of us don't have the luxury of having everywhere we need to go in our lives being in a timely bikeable/walkable distance, and motor vehicles are necessary for much of modern society to function.

Oh I agree, I own a car that I drive everyday. I was more making a point about how our understanding of what street spaces are for isn't set in stone.
Even in the short term. For instance when I was young I lived on a dead end, and would play in the street all the time. Then they extended the road to connect it to a state highway, and kids stopped playing in the road. It went from a terminal point to a conduit. There wasn't a huge increase in traffic, but the idea of the road as a communal space was lost simply by having through traffic. The problem isn't cars it's how the dominance of the car on public streets has effected everything else.
Also parking. The worst part of every design meeting I have ever been in is the question "But where will we put the parking?"

>What follows from this?
No one?
Alright, I'll do it.
If all races use cycles, that means either that it is the best option for transportation or that the use of cycles is being enforced by an outside force.
The existence of a top-down force restricting forms of transport is counter-intuitive, bizarre, and raises even more questions, so I'll discount the cycle Illuminati.

So the question becomes, why are cycles the best option?

First, there must be widespread availability of cycle technology.
The spread of this technology could be via natural dissemination of an economically viable and worthy idea or through pro-cycle societies such as a cycle based religion or cult.
Perhaps there was a Johnny Appleseed of the pedal.
The technology of the world must be such that the manufacture of cycles is affordable throughout the world, which is perfectly plausible in most fantasy worlds.

Second, there must be no superior or comparable but cheaper technology.
There needs to be a reason why people are using cycles and not horses.
There should be an absence of free flying carpets.
Engines would precipitate the development of motorcycles and cars so they cannot be available.
Crazy Hassan's camels are right out.

Third, the other anons are correct in that all-terrain cycles are difficult for everyone to use, therefore the road systems are likely to be superior so that the common person can use them, and that too needs explaining.
Unless, all cycles are mountain bikes.

Fourth, if cycles are used universally, there may be more uses of them than in modern society.
They may be used for more than personal conveyance or transporting others.
Perhaps technology developed to allow hauling of heavy carts via pedal driven cycles.
Perhaps cycles are used to generate power or drive machinery as well.
The tricycle & quadcycle would not necessarily be less popular than the bicycle.

Fifth, traveling clothes might incorporate head, knee, and elbow protection, but they would not necessarily resemble modern equipment, nor would they be consistent across the world.

Sixth, there would be different styles of cycles in every culture.
A Mongolian kobold's cycle would not resemble the cycle of a Swedish minotaur.

Seventh, cycle manufacturing and repair would be an important occupation and position within the community.
Competition might be fierce and there would likely be competing schools of thought on proper construction of a cycle.

Eighth, cycles would be found in warfare.
Military cyclists might be present in many armed forces.
Military cycles would be designed to withstand the rigors of combat.
Defenses against opposing force's cyclists would be developed.

Ninth, trick cyclists would be great showmen.
Tony Hawk would have a bard class.
Although many would appreciate the extent of the showman's talent, they would not describe it as extreme.

Tenth, as a uniform trait of all societies, riding cycles might be a bonding trait.
There might be regular celebrations and competitions of cycling.
These events would be largely peaceful gatherings of mutual respect of the cycle.
It would be like Hockey night in Canada.

I wouldn't count bikes out even if there were horses in the setting. For farmworkers beasts of burden would still reign, but in terms of travel or military action? Bikes don't require an extra supply chain, they don't get disease, it's much easier to lodge them for the night, and so on. Horses might still be used in some applications, but for your average traveller, rangers, scouts, and maybe even mounted infantry, bikes are a better option.

First we need to understand the history of the various cycles and their origin.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_bicycle

So its starts off as a simple seat with two wheels and a handlebar for steering, and was basically really fast walking. It was immensely popular and was a nice alternative during a food shortage that resulted in lots of horses starving to death. It was also called the Draisine (after its inventor Baron Karl von Drais)/Dandy Horse. It was innovated and went in and out of fashion for several decades until a Frenchman added cranks and pedals to it.

Before its creation several varieties of Tricycles and Quadracycles were invented and were popular.

And velocipedes and early bicycles were immensely popular all on their own. After all, you don't have to take care of some smelly beast that could throw you to the ground and then stomp on you.

But there is a bigger background to the world and how these bikes affect it. For one, you need semi reliable roads that are generally safe. For more advanced ones and the amount of manufacturing involved requires a certain level of industry and civilization with extensive metal working.

Of course, once you have bicycles and its variation invented, their spread will reach wide and far. Pic related.

And in other parts of the world they have been fairly extensive, used in shipping freight with special cycles designed for it. Rickshaws or pedal taxis have always been pretty popular also.

>I wouldn't count bikes out even if there were horses in the setting
You have a solid point.
What I see though, is that most hauling heavy transport jobs, society would need horses.
This means society would *have* horses.
Thus, for running into town quickly you could just grab a bike or use the family's horse if it was available.
People who would prefer not working up a sweat would take horses.
Using horses to transport your troops won't exhaust the men nearly as much.

>for your average traveller, rangers, scouts, and maybe even mounted infantry, bikes are a better option.
I disagree on the average traveler, but depending on the situation, rangers and scouts would be excellent on cycles.

Scenario:
>Scout on cycle locates enemy camp
>Is spotted by the enemy
>races back to own forces
>pursued by enemy on horseback
>scout is obviously well trained cyclist
>scout has a ruggedly elite mountain bike
How does the chase end?
