You live as though swimming in an ocean. The noise of people and cars, of dreams being realized and breaking to pieces, honking horns and howling wind all fades into a low thrum - the heartbeat of the city. Your shades are drawn shut, and your eyes open for a moment to look at your apartment's whirling ceiling fan before closing again. You can't seem to sleep.

You shift the towel you draped over your clock - it's 11:59 on a Saturday night, then 12:00 on a Sunday morning. It's now your birthday, September 7th. How old are you?

I'll keep it in mind and make a twitter. Mind you this quest will mostly be running on weekends.
>>
>>43763900
The point of a twitter is to inform people when the next quest will be and if there is any interrupts to the schedule, which eventually there will be.

I remember one quest without a twitter and one weekend it just stopped running and I knew it my heart that was the end of it. I don't particularly like that to happen.

But hey, I'm here for magical boys and magical girls.

You're 13 years old today. You expected becoming a teenager to be some great milestone, for some great step to be taken. You feel like you're seeing the world with the same eyes you always have, though. It seems like there is no great change.

Then, the silence comes. The honking horns stop. The lights from the city flicker out. The shouting. The stirring. It all falls away into the conspicuous sound of nothingness.

You wait for it all to come back, as though nothing has happened. It doesn't. You look at your clock. Darkness, nothing but darkness. Casting of your sheets and sliding on a pair of sweatpants, you crack the door to your room, slowly. Part of you doesn't want to disturb the silence.

You don't have to worry about that anymore, though, when you hear a voice coming from down the hallway. Not father's voice. And your mother has been gone, for a long time now. It's saddening to think about.

"Without a precedent, it can't be predicted. That alone should tell you that it isn't worth it."

"It's a risk, but you have to think of the gain. The procedure itself was untested at one point."

"This is different - "

It's time for you to make your first skill roll. When failure is a possibility, this determines whether or not you succeed. To do this, you roll 3d7. If the majority of players' highest die roll beats the target number, you have succeeded. If not, you have failed.

Since this is average difficulty, your roll must be greater than or equal to 4.

You once read "The Telltale Heart", when you were still a little kid. Your dad has this big book of stories by Poe, and the idea of a man, wizened and evil, over the course of hours silently opening the door to your room to lop you to pieces gave you nightmares for a week.

Now, you're the one slowly opening the door, praying that no one notices. And they don't. And you see... light? Two spheres, silvery and electric, hanging suspended in the air.

"Untested, maybe, but the framework existed. We can't simply act randomly or we're no better than, than - "

"Than what? Humans? If they're so terrible, why do we need them?"

"I think this one's awake."

They don't turn, don't shift, but you know they can sense you. There's a silent moment where the world holds its breath.

"Uh... hi..." You say, tentatively. Your pale skin looks almost bluish with only them illuminating you, casting dancing shadows everywhere.

One pulses slightly. "Look, whatever you're doing, it's on you. I'm not going to be a part of this." And then, it's gone. The other drifts closer.

"Hey, kid. It's Caleb, right?" The angel, demon, ghost, or whatever asks you. You can feel the tines of energy giving you goosebumps.

"Uh, yeah, Caleb Connors." You start to be a bit less afraid. It sounds so human, so comforting. You can almost see your reflection in it - blonde hair, cut short and blue eyes.

"You're going to help me do something."

"I, uh, I-"

"You're going to help me save the world."

"Okay...wait, what? The fuck?" you say, adding the expletive much softer than the rest of the sentence. Your friends give you a lot of grief for not really ever swearing, but it seems appropriate right now. "What's going on? Why me?"

"You don't have to understand everything." The ball of lightning says paternally, a sentence you never thought could apply anywhere, much less to your life.

"But I do. Am I gonna end up dead, or - oh, wait. This is all a dream, isn't it? I just close my eyes and I, I..."

The ball of light moves forward, too fast for reaction. It passes into your chest, and feels warm inside you, and you look outside the window. In a breathless realization, you see that without the light of the city, every star burns bright in the night sky. "Yes. You're sleeping. But now, you wake up."

Your clock alarm was turned off for the weekend, but you can see it when you open your eyes. It's 9:24. You don't usually sleep this late or stay up as late as you... wait a minute.

You sniff the air, and catch the wafting smell of bacon. Nothing like that to get you out of bed in the morning. He said that there used to be more nice meals back when mom was around, but that was before you could remember.

You look down and are surprised that you aren't wearing sweatpants. Correcting that, you pull a T-shirt on over yourself as well. It's a bit too big and hangs loose on you, but the cool print only came in those sizes.

"Morning, sport. Eggs and bacon." Dad has a hairline that's slightly receded and his hair is like salt and pepper. He's smiling broadly and wearing a polo.

You rub your eyes and step out into the main room of your apartment. "Morning, dad. Was there a blackout last night?"

"Things get dark during the night." You groan.

"No, like a real big blackout."

"Don't think so, but I was probably asleep by then. Why?"

"Eh, it's nothing. Do you believe in aliens?"

"Well, I guess. But the idea that they'd actually show up on Earth seems kinda silly. Any reason for these questions?"

"I dunno, I had this dream, I think."

"You aren't sure whether or not you had it?" He asks.

"I'm not sure whether or not it was a dream. There were these talking balls of light, and everything got dark. One of them told me that I had to save the world and went inside me."

Your father smiles. "Well, if you're gonna save the world, you shouldn't do it on an empty stomach. Eat up!"

You're a growing boy, and you shovel the mixture of scrambled and crunchy goodness onto your plate, a mere formality before you shovel it into your mouth.

The TV's on and your Dad watches a soccer game and chats with you at the same time.

"Well, yeah, my history teacher was a jerk too. You just gotta learn to deal with - Oh, come on, ref!"

You nod your head.

"Oh yeah, your friend Alex called you about coming over around seven. I told him you'd call back."

"'Kay, I guess. You should tell me stuff like this when I wake up."

"Woah there. For you, "wake up" is something that happens after breakfast and twenty minutes of staring out the window. You groan. Again.

"Ca I have the phone to call him?" He doesn't speak, but holds it out to you. In a second, the number is dialed from memory.

"Hello?" Says a female voice.

"Hi, Mrs. Black. It's Caleb."

"Oh, Caleb, good morning! I'll put you on the phone with him."

A pause. "Hey, Caleb. Can you come over?"

"Yeah, once my homework's done."

"Man, that's why you do it Saturday. You hear that storm last night?"

"No, I didn't think there was one."

"Yeah, the wind was going crazy. Could hardly sleep." You look outside, and the ground is rather wet. "So, when can you come over?"

"I'll call you." You make a beeline for your backpack. You can't wait to get to

You look forward to being able to bike with your friend before the weather starts to turn. Last year, the snow came overnight and suddenly. It was Alex who taught you how to leave a rubber skid mark on the sidewalk, who showed you how to to race down a hill with the wind in your hair and not be afraid.

"Fascinating. So this is what being human feels like." That wasn't your father.

"Okay, I know it's not a dream. What are you?"

"I'm Delta. Well, that's my designation."

"And?"

"I'm a being of pure energy. I need a physical body to inhabit if I want to interact with the world."

"Wait... So I'm being possessed?"

"Quite the opposite. You've become more than human. A being born to fight evil."

"More than..."

"Yes. You are the world's very first Magical Boy!"
