The idea is to make the mechanics progress too, introducing new stuff as new technology gets developed (Prehistory is basic resources, Ancient Era already includes some basic country-city migration movements save for some super events, in modern times migration would be a normal thing...) but also changing the numbers and making everything bigger.
When your nation is a small 20 man tribe living in some cave or being nomadic you get, say, five points of food. A Greek city state will be talking in hundreds. Rome will be talking in thousands. Modern age will be in the millions.
This way things won´t be just a reskin of older eras. If one player wants to fuck around and be one of those small tribes who still live like in ancient times, traveling and hunting and shit, then he´d be free to do so. And his neighbor, already equivalent to modern day USA, won´t be producing also 10 points of food because that´s what the population (proportionally) needs.
The problem is finding a way to
1-track and calculate the amount of food you´re producing. Hex tiles? You´d begin with a couple and slowly expand and update immediately, so you can keep easy track of everything with a simple table. Change a couple numbers when you get more land or new tech and that´s it, no need to recalculate and recount for more than a few seconds at a time. Tech could be like, 1 point of food per tile x 5 tiles, or x 500 tiles, etc., x or + other number that comes out of inventions, like +1/3 for crop rotation, x1,5 for animal use, x2 for natural fertilizers and much later on again for artificial fertilizers, x? for tractor use...
2-Simplify point 1 so it´s not an endless list of technologies and bonuses to keep track of. I want it to be simple and fluid, sort of like Civilization 5. The flexibility should come from decisions rather than mechanics.
3-Find a way to let creativity shape the mechanics on the fly so civs aren´t cookie cutter, like in Civilization

Google gives me 30,500 results for "roll one die" anh only 10,500 results for "roll one dice", which certainly doesn't suggest that "the singular die is increasingly uncommon." More than 1/4 of results being "roll one dice" is surprisingly high though. Then again, a lot of people use English as a secondary language, and I imagine that a disproportionately high number of them fall into the "roll one dice" category.

the appeal is in how it handles high-level play. It's built so you naturally transition from low-level dungeoncrawling, to carving out a niche and building influence with the spoils from your dungeoncrawling, to running a domain by yourself. In fact, high-level PCs have reasons to do stuff like build dungeons (filled with monsters and treasure) of their own - mostly to further magical research - and I've seen GMs have you roll up a new party of first-level PCs to go into the dungeon that a high level PC just built.
Rules wise, it's a little more complicated than b/x but nowhere near WotC-era dnd. I'd put it about the same as 2nd ed. D&D.

That's all stuff you could do anyway. ACK just gives you a list of arbitrary tables and leaves you to do the work of putting it together into a coherent narrative. You can't make rules for the dynamics of running fiefdoms, guilds and laboratories as it's all very dynamic stuff.
It just annoys me that it fails to deliver on what is otherwise a really cool concept.
The rules do look pretty clear cut for d20, but so do other OSR games.
