What games do you enjoy with persistent squad change over a series of games?
For example, in Mordheim and Necromunda, your squaddies not only level up and gain skills, but also receive injuries that effect how they fight. I really enjoy that sense of emergent narrative from the random (and tactical choice driven) elements, but it is hard to find folks to play Necromunda with because the models for it no longer exist (unless you count proxies). What other traditional games (miniature and otherwise) do you folks know of/enjoy along those lines? Any vidya game suggestions along those lines while you are at it?
This is really interesting to me, even though I don't have much to contribute.
Frost Grave does this, in a limited degree, with wizards establishing bases that alter the army sometimes, wizard injuries, leveling and spell gain/selling.
Xcom for sci-fi vidya that does this so well I cream myself, with permadeath.
The blackboard series has been enjoyable so far, dnd mixed with xcom kindanotreally but it's squad based turn based tactical with leveling.
>>43751640
Blackguard series, sorry. Its vidya
The Mordheim PC game which was recently released is a pretty faithful reinterpretation of the tabletop game. It has really in depth squad building and character customization, as well as a mix of random skirmish maps and story missions. It's also brutally hard, and is utterly unafraid of murdering or crippling your guys. It's a bit pricey, so I might wait for a sale, but I got it cheap in Early Access and I'm kinda loving it.
>>43751640
X-Com also delivers on this in a big way, watching your squaddies die or having them out a month because they nearly got gutted before evac last mission.
>>43751644
>>43751662
Vidya for this is also really awesome, as again, finding folks to play these kinds of games with locally is really difficult.
And yeah, I've been helplessly oggling the Mordheim PC game for a while now and it looks awesome.
I wonder how difficult it is to proxy Mordheim characters from Warhammer Fantasy models...
>>43751662
I'm digging Mordheim too, but is there more to do once you've done the 4 campaign missions, other than endless scenario grind?
>>43751919
The fun part beyond that is the multiplayer. I've had amazing times chatting with a friend over voicechat while we duke it out in the ruins. It makes the game a lot more interesting and nuanced to play against a real person, even if you're doing the same old objectives. I do hope they add more content though, more warbands and missions.
>>43751931
>more warbands
pls witch hunters, pls
Necromunda was the most fun I've ever had with table top games. It's sad that dipping in and out of the hobby and moving around has meant I don't know anyone to play it with anymore. I should give mordheim a try really. Bloodbowl is a whole different thing but has a lot of similar elements.
>>43751931
More warbands would be great. I need my Orcs trying to kill each other.
>tfw you posted on /tg/ years ago to find a Mordheim group in your city
>tfw it actually worked and you had some really good times
>tfw 8 warbands over a long campaign, rivalries and alliances, ups and downs
>tfw people moved away, or stopped being friends, and things eventually fell apart and there's just you now>tfw you get an email out of the blue saying "oh man I was trawling through the archives and saw a post about Mordheim in Melbourne, bit of a longshot but is the group still together?>tfw you have to tell him no, and most likely neither of you will ever experience it again
>>43751981
>>tfw that anon was me.
>>tfw that anon is slowly getting his partner into the hobby, just so he'll have someone to play against.
>>43752962
If your partner does get into it I can rustle up another dude, that'd give us four.
>>43752969
The challenge begins. She's putting together The Phoenix from the Kingdom Death boardgame right now. First mini she's ever put together. She's going to greenstuff the gaps and paint it herself. It'll be interesting to see the results.
>>43752992
Excellent, keep in touch, lurk more tabletop skirmish threads, and we might just be able to make this happen...
>>43751618
Twelve Elements of War (stupid name) tries to be like Mordheim, but no one else I know plays it.
>>43751618
Necromunda is my jam. I used to run large campaigns that lasted months with narrative changes and maps and the whole mess. Then the place we used to play closed and there is nowhere big enough to host the games now. I feel I may never know that joy again.
>>43754451
>>43751981
You two need to start a support group
>>43751618
i played lots of necromunda but never with official models, completely converting your gang is half the fun.tough i wish i got some redemtionist when they where first released
pic related, my genestealer cult starter gang (the rules for them apeared in the citadel journal iirc) they did meh'ish, i like some more body's with guns but the genestealers are monsters in necromunda
>>43756773
True... although it is a little harder to sell people on gritty-gang-war than it is on murderous-treasure-hunters.
Those genestealer cultists are absolutely gorgeous btw.
/hwg/ master race reporting in.
>>43757403
i always preferred necromunda over mordheim but i agree with what you're saying
and thnx anon! alas it was not to be, so not my playing style. i made them a modern version patriarch, a standerd bearer, a heavy and three more genestealers and lend them to the campaign master, who with help of some local cawdors, had them eat my new gang in the fianl campaign battle...
Post your gangs yo gitz
>>43759169
i build this one for an ashwastes campaign, i also have gyrocopter but i never got that painted
>>43759305
Looking pretty funky, haha. How did you build it?
>>43759322
thnx!
Malifaux has a campaign mode in the Shifting Loyalties book.
On top of units having chances at getting injuries and upgrades as the game progresses, there's also a variant mode where you have a base that you're customizing as you play, with different base types like Saloon, Hidden Lab, Swamp Village, etc.

Nice concept and execution, just try to take pics without flash next time, mate.

His handwriting seems to be lacking. But what do you expect from a Tyranid in disguise.
>>43751942
Do not despair Anon! For the Specialist Games will be back!
>>43762928
Not te anon you were replying to, but that's actually really great to hear. I really hate trawling through eBay lists looking for a model with a decent price and I'd never be able to convince my friends to do it, so being able to buy a starter kit or an faction box will be awesome. Even if GW release shitty new rules, we can just stick to the classic ones! This might be what makes me return to GW's sweaty embrace.
>>43757649
I see I'm late to the party.
OP, this is definitely a game you want to look into.
>>43763469
modern warfare sucks though
>>43751618
>Any vidya game suggestions along those lines while you are at it?
Apart from the obvious choice called X-Com, there is also a game called Majesty: A fantasy kingdom Sim.
It's a strategy game set in a voluntarily archetypical fantasy world, where you don't directly control your heroes/ units. They have a stat set and abilities (depending on the unit let's say Druid, Chaos Warrior, Necromancer etc.) just like in a normal rpg and an individual daily routine which consists of hunting mobs, visiting taverns/ gardens etc., buying gear.
They level and gear up individually and suffer permadeath.
>>43763924
>modern warfare sucks though
Five Core is an adaptable rule system and has several cupplements such as gang warfare or sci-fi (called five parsecs from home iirc)
that mordheim game isn't too bad, it could do with more warbands but random mutations are pretty grand fun, as well as the permanent injuries
>>43764066
Not that anon, but has anyone adapted it for fedual Japan? I've always wanted to run a band of travelling ronin.
Also, a bit off topic, but has anyone created or adapted a game for large battles or skirmishes in the SoIaF setting? I know there is an RPG but it seems ripe for consistent campaigns, set during one war or another.
>>43765352
>Not that anon, but has anyone adapted it for fedual Japan? I've always wanted to run a band of travelling ronin.
There is a game, I forgot the name though. Ask /hwg/, it's in their library.
>SoIaF setting
What does that stand for?
>>43765507
>What does that stand for?
Song of Ice and Fire. Game of Thrones.
>>43759305
You do this on purpose?
>>43765990
Oh okay.
I think I've seen some people convert perry historicals as various Game of Thrones factions and used the Kingdoms of Man armies lists to play Kings of War with them. No skirmishers though afaik.
Shouldn't be too hard to houserule if you got a solid frame work to work with.
Sadly my memory is terrible, but there is also a middle ages skirmisher that people sometimes talk about in /hwg/. It's called something something blade. Sorry I can't be more helpful in that regard, but any game that is somewhere around 1000-1200 should probably be right in terms of armor and equipment.
It's been a long time though since I read the books, so this might not be accurate.Seriously, might have been 10 years back now.
>>43765990
>>43767414
Come to think of it have a look at Osprey games.
Lion Rampant could be interesting and they also have a Samurai game iirc. The books only cost around 15 bucks so they're a pretty good deal too.
>>43765213
...fucking game won't work on a 32bit system...
Waiting on my warbands to turn up, but here are some terrain I'm working on.
If there's any anons in Queensland on the Sunshine Coast, or even as far as brissy, I'd Love to host a mordheim group. I'm working on a heap of terrain.
>>43767897
they said somewhere they are trying to make it 32 bit compatible as we speak, just before launch.
have hope

kek
no i did not, i just like flightless birds
>>43751618
been playing this with friends, good fun
>>43751618
Dead Man's Hand. Not the most developed ruleset (although a community over our side of the pond is developing some homebrew additions that look promising), but the cards make it a damn good time. Nothing like hitting an opponent hard and taking out a good couple of his guys, only for them to fight back with a vengeance and even win from what looked like a surefire win for you. Really not something to play for strategy, just if you like it when gameplay and dicerolls tell a narrative.
>>43768016
Oh main I have a guy doing both Mordheim and DMH campaigns-

Are you thinking of Ronin? The small scale skirmish game.
Come to think of it, modifying the 5 Men in Normandy campaign system might work for Ronin.
>>43769977
I plan on painting this fat brother with a shotgun with a dark tan and calling him Uncle Ruckus
>>43769636
i love gorkamorka! Anyone who likes Madmax would also love it. I hope it comes back.
>>43767414
Thanks for the advice! It'd be jolly good fun to run a game set during the War of Five Kings, the Blackfyre or Robert's Rebellion. Complicated to implement the more literal backstabbing though, which I think would be half the appeal!
Possibly find compatible skirmish rules, so commanders can be equally represented if they have to fight someone personally. But, still seems like a waste of time if you've just poisoned the poor bastard, not Red Wedding him.
Still, could be Diplomacy levels of fun/friendship destroying.
Did somebody say Necromunda?
>>43770617
Does somebody know in which White Dwarfs the Mordheim town cryer was published? Nuber 1 was in WD 238 I thinks. But the rest?
>>43771520
There was the section in white dwarf for a few months but it then became it's own magazine like all specialist games.

I've been looking at a game called This is not a test.
Basically it's Mordheim in a Fallout like post a pocket world.
There are videos on YouTube and they have a pretty active face book group.
Don't suppose anyone has the pdf?
