What are some things that could the way the world is dramatically? Some things to make stuff set on Earth a bit more interesting. Alternate history or predicted future, all things are cool.

Like the Atlantropa project, a series of dams and canals to drain the Mediterranean 200 meters and gain new land for Europe and Africa, coupled with a series of dams in Africa to fill the Chad basin, flooding a lot of Africa, creating a naval route from the Mediterranean to central Africa, and using this water to irrigate the Sahara.

The idea was first conceived in the 1920s by a German architect Herman Sörgel, and promoted by him until his death in the 1950s.

Bottom line, evolution would happen as normal, except for Australia and NZ, which would still be dominated by dinosaurs.

You know in America we put people spread out across suburbs and small apartment blocks the way we do to reduce the effectiveness of enemy bombing runs.

American cities aren't very dense so strikes wouldn't be able to take out much of the population at a time.

Similar scale to the Mediterranean project
>>
>>43751419
Wait, where exactly is all the water in the Mediterranean that they're getting rid of suppsoed to go? Evaporation? Yeah, there's this puddle in between Israel and Jordan showing you how well that's going to end. Pump it out? GLHF. And any overflow from Chad will apparently go into the Mediterranean, so that won't be an option to deal with what keeps pouring in once every thing's been established. Did Sörgel just hope the labourers building the dams would get thirsty enough working in the Mediterranean heat to drink a million billion pints of water?

They actually did that in St. Louis, where much of the northern part of the city was demolished and replaced with the Pruitt-Igoe housing project.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it became one of the most horrifying places in American history. The towers were lawless wastelands of rape, banditry, and murder. Within two decades, the violence had become so severe that 90% of the original inhabitants had either moved out or been killed and the project was all but abandoned. Even after the demolition of the site, the damage it had done to the collective psyche of the people of St. Louis continued, and that half of the city remains unsafe to this day.

Well the Mediterranean had already experienced a bit of drainage, there was a point where it was feared the Adriatic Sea could dry up, of course now with rising sea levels Venice is sinking and all, though if it was separated from the ocean it wouldn't be as effected from ice cap melt.

The dams would be massive hydroelectric plants that could power the pumping stations that would be required, like how the North America Water and Power Association (seen here >>43757656) planned for dams in some parts to power pumps in other parts.

A drained ocean world would be pretty crazy too.

We really need to launch a big interstate restoration project or something though, or just a general effort to improve our infrastructure nation wide.

If the extinction was slightly weaker than normal, evolution wouldn't go as it did in our world. Floras and faunas would be a lot more North America-dominated, mammal evolution would be drastically different due to the survival of zhelestids, many extinct marsupials, and other lineages that bit it at the KT, non-avian dinosaurs would probably survive in some form (like the smaller meat-eaters and ornithopods), etc. The KT wiped out just as many little critters that would have gone on to dominate the world if they had survived as it did dinosaurs and marine reptiles, and if the extinction was just a little weaker they would have survived.

>>43758367
>But we probably wouldn't have 4chan if Hitler won, so there's that.
Bullshit. While Japan might not Industrialise as hard, I don't doubt that they would ~eventually~ do so. Maybe in the '70s instead of the '50s. That leads to 2channel existing.

Something Awful is an inevitability in a fascist environment, given that there'll always be someone who wants to make a mockery out of human suffering.
The question of whether General Bullshit still exists, I don't know. Might get shut down for being political.

But where 2channel and Something Awful exists, 4chan exists.
Similarly, Tumblr and Facebook are inevitabilities. As are eBay and Amazon.

What might not exist are twitch.tv and reddit. twitch.tv 's success was a complete fucking fluke. While of course there'll be streaming sites, I expect twitch to not exist. Reddit is a bit more iffy in that Slashdot and Digg (its predecessors) will exist, but I'm not seeing the potential for a discus-anything website with a horrendous UI.

The internet is surprisingly unaffected by political landscape, given that the social dynamics which govern the internet are about human ~boredom~ more than about human aspirations.

>The dams would be massive hydroelectric plants that could power the pumping stations that would be required

Ok, so we're putting a dam where water wants to flow form A to B to get power. And we use that power to pump water form B to A. And this is the point where we realise that Sörgel spent thermodynamics class zonked out on morphine and absinthe, because even if you just want that thing to break even on power you got yourself the hydroeletric equivalent of a Villard wheel.
>>
>>43760014
he probably was the worst kind of racist who genuinly thought he was doing the right thing.
>>
>>43760140
You'll have more than one dam, as well as other power sources pumping water out, and a dam does hold back water, once it's out the only water getting back in is what the dam lets back in, or what goes over the dam if it gets too full, so it would take a lot of pumping, power and time, but it would work.
