It's been a weird afternoon so far. The school day was pretty normal, for the most part, but in the last hour you've attempted rune magic for the first time, almost blown yourself up, created a homunculus that calls you “daddy” and exposed Meliora's insecurities about how alive she really is. Plus you still need to talk to Jennifer about her new job, talk to Angie about her boss and her meeting at some point, and see if Sammy and Andrea are alright after the party last night. Well, you don't have to, but you kinda want to. You give Meliora a squeeze and release her.
“So, what happens now?”
Meliora runs her eyes.
“Well, my dad isn't going to be happy that one of the defense droids is now flesh and blood... I was hoping to get her upgraded and online before he noticed she was being 'repaired', but now he's going to work it out for sure. And since the math teacher is gone, he won't be able to get a fresh core crafted safely, so he's going to be even more upset.”
You nod slowly as Athena moves to your side and latches onto you. Meliora rolls her eyes.
“You'll need to be careful. We should head back to our room and work this out from there.”

Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.

I can picture the scene now.
Oliver kicking open the door and screaming "ANGIE HOW PURE IS MY DAUGHTERU!?"
You look at Athena and pat her on the head before pausing. Unnatural life. What was it Angie said? Those who drive the dead to dance will swiftly join their ranks? You don't know how golem cores are made, or if this artificial soul will get you in trouble, but the safest thing you can think of at the moment is making sure that Angie doesn't reap you for this and smoothing this over as soon as possible.
“Actually, we should take her to the nurse. Get her a checkup, make sure that everything is fine. She's not mechanical anymore, so your dad won't be able to help us out, and I don't want any accidents. You said that she's stable right now, right?”
Meliora sighs.
“Fine, but if anything goes wrong it's on you.”
You smile down at Athena.
“We're going to see someone to get you checked out, alright?”
Athena nods before moving behind you and scrambling up your back, arms around your neck and floppy sleeves dangling across your chest. Meliora's eyes glow for a moment.
“And saved. I'm gonna start a little family album of the two of you. She's got your eyes and everything.”
Meliora walks back over to the computer and presses a few buttons, a panel on the wall opening up, and she pulls out a backpack.
“The nurse is a reaper, by the way. I've only got a few rounds of ammunition capable of warding her off, and it's only a temporary measure, but I do have a few traps I can set in case things go horribly wrong.”
She heads for the door without waiting for a response.

Meliora looks over her shoulder at you.
“Will you ever stop being surprising? You're making it hard to properly adjust the sensitivity of my settings when you keep coming up with new ways to hopelessly annihilate my expectations.”
Athena giggles.
“Annihilate!”
She leans back, legs wrapped around your waist, and thrusts her fists into the air.
“Boom!”
She wobbles and then hastily grabs onto your collar to steady herself, which in turn almost sends you tumbling to the ground. Meliora grabs your wrist and holds you upright until you find your footing again, and Athena clings to you tightly.
“There. Better?”
You and Athena both nod, and Meliora turns and continues walking.
“Honestly, you're both as bad as each other...”
You and Athena exchange glances and shrug, and you follow Meliora the rest of the way to the nurse's office. When you arrive Meliora sits next to the door and begins unpacking what appears to be some kind of rifle made of black metal, loading it with strange bullets that look more like masses of black vines than actual ammunition, and they make your head hurt to look at.
“I'll cover you. Go on ahead.”
You nod and look at the door.

You open the door and step inside, smiling as you carry Athena into the office.
“Hey Angie, how's it going? I've got a quest-”
When the blade of Angie's scythe stops an inch from your face you stop short, and you peer over it at Angie. Her dark hair has turned white, and one of her eyes is glowing red.
“...tion. Um...”
Angie drops her scythe, clutching at her head and staggering backward.
“No, Zeke, this is... my turf!”
Angie laughs. Another voice, distinctly male. It's a cold, cruel chuckle.
“You don't get to decide this one, we have rules. Artificial spirits must be destroyed!”
Her hair begins to turn back to normal bit by bit.
“She's a golem! And as a monster, we have to let her live! Do you want to break the pact and sacrifice all the humans here?”
She trips over her scythe and squirms on the ground, eyes shut tightly.
“Fine then, Angela. She can live. For now. The moment she leaves this place, though...”
Angie pants quietly, opening her eyes. She frowns at you.

Athena climbs off your back and walks over to Angie. The two look at each other for a moment before Athena sits down on Angie's stomach.
“Were you gonna kill my daddy...?”
Angie shakes her head.
“Nope. My brother, Zeke? Yep. He would have done it. He works it a different department than I do, and he doesn't have a corporeal body to manifest with, so he was trying to use mine. What you're sitting on right now is basically a false body that I'm piloting around. He was trying to take control, so to speak.”
Athena nods and pokes Angie's nose before laying down on her. Angie blinks, then looks at you.
“I didn't think you'd be taking my advice in this direction. I mean, blood wasn't even the fluid I was talking about.”
Athena rolls onto her back and waves at you, sleeve flopping back and forth.

Athena smiles at you.

Angie sits up a bit.
“Sure thing. Come on, Hop, time for a medical exam.”
Athena stands up and starts to bunny hop over to one of the beds. You raise an eyebrow.
“Hop?”
Angie brushes herself off and stands.
“Yeah. You're Ollie, and she's a little Ollie. A hop.”
Athena starts to take off her jumpsuit, and Angie closes a curtain.
“You can come back in ten minutes or so. I'm gonna test for everything and make sure that she'll be alright.”

The curtain cuts off your view of her right as she starts to nod, and you walk outside. Meliora is standing at attention with her rifle, Canny hovering next to her shoulder.
“Status report?”
You gesture to the door.
“She's getting a medical exam right now to make sure that she's alright and Angie's brother nearly put a scythe between my eyes. So there's that. I think you can stand down for now though.”
Meliora nods and begins dismantling her rifle, packing it away. Canny hovers around you before landing on your head and beeping quietly at you. You sit down against the wall and Meliora moves next to you.
“So what do we do while we wait?”
You shrug.
“No clue.”
Meliora nods and closes her eyes.

You reach up and gently pat Canis while you wait.
“So what were those bullets made from? They looked kinda like vines.”
Meliora leans back slightly and looks at you.
“Angels can't tolerate certain substances. Black iron, for instance, taken from the deepest regions of the pit, can temporarily take away an angel's divine radiance and make them weaker than mortals. Black iron is grown rather than mined, and because it's hard to work with and impossible to smelt it's usually just compressed into the desired shape or grown in specially made containers to form it naturally. These bullets are hard to use because of their shape, but they seek out angels once fired, so that tends to make up for it.”
You nod and gently move Canis to your lap, inspecting the little droid. It has a lot of little flaps on its mostly smooth exterior, so it probably has little appendages tucked away, and probably some weapons of its own. It turns itself over slowly before hovering up and positioning itself an inch from your face, bumping against your nose before moving back to its perch atop your head.
The rest of the wait passed fairly easily, and when Angie opens the door Athena immediately runs out of the office, lollipop clutched between her teeth and a smile on her face. Angie steps out and waves at Meliora, who gives a half-hearted wave in return.
“Well, she's medically fine. I mean, her cells are literally exploding on a constant basis and being replaced by new ones instantly by her core, but aside from her extreme metabolic rate and the fact that her brain is literally a blob of useless fat cells while her core does all the work, she's fairly normal.”
Athena walks over to you and takes the lollipop out of her mouth, shoving it into yours with a smile. It's sour apple. Very, very sour apple.
“Good...?”

She nods and chomps down in it, crunching the candy and chewing on the stick. You pat her on the head and turn to Angie.
“Thanks for checking on her. And is there anything I need to know about Zeke? You can tell me later if need be, but I want to make sure that everything is going to be alright.”
Angie nods.
“I'll tell you everything tonight, don't worry. For now I have a brother to berate.”
You get to your feet and Athena climbs onto your back once more.
“I guess we head back to the room then?”
Meliora nods and starts walking, and you follow behind her, Canny still balancing on your head. When you get back to the room Meliora walks inside and chucks her backpack onto her bed. Jennifer is on your bed reading in a bathrobe and, you assume, underwear. She pauses, sniffs at the air, and grimaces.
“What in the world is that sme-”
She looks at you, then at Athena, and gags, running to the bathroom and slamming the door closed. You crouch a bit so Athena can climb down and try to work out what the problem is. Oh right. Athena's cells are dying constantly, and Jennifer's nose is sensitive. She probably smells like a corpse to her or something. Hmm.

Meliora nods a bit.

She opens up a case and pulls a few devices out, carrying them over to Athena and starting to attach them to the work suit she's wearing. You head for the bathroom and step inside, closing the door behind yourself. Jennifer is kneeling beside the toilet, panting softly and shaking. You move next to her and pat her on the back.
“Are you alright?”
Jennifer nods slightly.
“I will be... She just... It's rather unpleasant, that smell... She smells the way that you would if you were dead. It made me scared and nauseous all at once.”
She turns and hugs you, taking a deep breath.
“But you're alright. You're not dead. So I'll be fine.”
You chuckle quietly.
“I'm too cool to die. Although I did almost blow myself up with rune magic earlier. You were completely right, by the by. Speaking of such things, I tampered with a golem core and accidentally made a homunculus. She's Athena, my daughter. I'd like you to meet her properly, once Meliora takes care of the whole... odor issue.”
Jennifer looks at you for a moment.
“If you were forty and lonely like Fenright then I'd completely understand.”
She sighs and closes her eyes, smiling softly.
