You'd think the go-to would be some sort of steam-powered chainsaw or something, for the pseudo-high tech theme.

I mean, whenever I've made time-based weapons and stuff, I've always modeled them to use a lot of glasswork, watchwork, and delicate lesser materials, but that was always just my most enjoyed style of time-centric equipment. I was always sad is was more co-opted as 'steampunk'. I just don't get the style though. It seems kind of lazy and without much variation.

That'd actually make some sort of sense - rachet it back with a pneumatic compression loaded mechanism, then release to perform an augmented steam power swing!
>>

This is a nice sword, but it has a lot of ways it could improve its look if it let up the hard 'gears and brass' limit.

I like the look of that. I mean it's the usual Cool Sword, but it does have a nice simple aesthetic. It doesn't look Steampunk at all though, it could fit into many settings and concepts. Steampunk, post-apoc, junkyard turf wars, some game, an industrial town, someone repairing some family or legendary blade with limited tools, and so on. A good prop sword.

I'd dig some demented knight whose only equipment source and steed is a shitload of bicycles from some source.

I like baroque styles with a focus. Actually, I think the only thing that ever came close to Steampunk that I liked was FF6s aesthetic, which was more like, the industrial revolution happens but decides to found it on magic dead shit instead of dinosaur dead shit. Felt like it had a focus and a style its own.

Having gone to steampunk conventions and parties etc I have to disagree. Yeah the gluing gears on shit is dumb and most people agree but at the end of the day when everyone gets together to be silly together it's incredibly fun. Nobody is smug, they all know how ridiculous it is.

That's why Steampunk bothers me, because any use of gears or clocks makes me think it's a time-item, so the other aesthetics are eh.

I honestly love more for weapons and armor to look total dirt industrial, bulky and gas-powered. I don't like pointless shit tacked onto weapons unless it's somehow holy, magical, or clearly mechanical like a small engine or whatever.

I split rocks when I was a kid with my family company. I wish I could do a Miner/Driller aesthetic thing. It's crystal clear in my mind. But like 2 people would get it or dig it. I loved a lot of Fallout 3 and New Vegas for letting you fuck around with power tools used as weapons like the chainsaw and explosives and thermal lance, etc.

>>
>>43701653
My idea of a steampunk setting was always a resurgence of the steam engine hype, air fortresses(which were common in the early 1900s) with only influence in terms of dress, but not much else. The society I'd imagine would be heavily blue collared, and to add realism I wouldn't add anything larger than a shed with a steam engine.

The thing about gears and cogs and...steam engine, is that it'd be clunky, inefficient, unrealistic, and get old since everything will have gears and cogs. However in my setting to have fun I wouldn't be above a steam powered giant, clunky robot suit. It would have not much practical except moving large things, and has a constant power supply of steam. If can further be used if lube was added to it's joints to increase speed...assuming you want to go through heavy maintenance.

I would have it be heavily focused on SOCIAL JUSTICE where you have blue collar engineer/tinkerers having to decide between fighting the corrupt industrialists and left-over nobility who oppress the poor and break up unions, or joining them and getting filthy fucking rich themselves but never being able to enter "polite" society as the left-over nobility still serves as the gateway to it.

IE, you can get rich enough to get your kids into the upper class by having them be wealthy enough to marry the nobility who are all still rich as fuck themselves, but you yourself will never be able to do so.

Would you specialize in making your own equipment? Utilizing others? Enhancing your own body with biology or steamwork power armour? Will you be a quick-talking thief, a noble who has to hid just how desperate he is for money or else he'll be kicked out the upper class and demoted to commoner? A mad inventor who sells to the highest bidder? A genius engineer supplying the revolution with unique weapons and performing industrial sabotage?

Essentially, I want to run a M&M/Shadowrun steampunk mash-up.

No 'woo, we're all rich people and it's all nice', just the grind of industrialised warfare.

I think one of the problems is that Steampunk is the only *punk genre people know.

If people actually knew that other kinds like Diesel, Gear/Clock, etc, existed, I don't think this would happen. Stereotypical/"mainstream" "Steampunk" is basically a fucked-up Diesel/Gear/Steampunk mashup and I unironically like it

The opposite view is of course that because it is the most visible to the normies, it is steampunk that produces cogshit like in the OP.

If the 20s Jazz Age aesthetic had greater attraction to the mainstream than romanticised Victoriana then dieselpunk would held in scorn and all "true" alt-tech types would prefer steam.

What would you call ficton that postulated alternative alternative sub-cultures based on alternative technologies?

Double-punk?

>What would you call ficton that postulated alternative alternative sub-cultures based on alternative technologies?

I've been building a setting with that, there's Hindu Cyberpunk India, Wild West/Dieselpunk Japan, etc. It's pretty damn fun.

More in the vein of blogs from a convention set in a world that is not quite like our own, where all the kids dress up as Roger Bacon or Paracelsus and show off alchemical contraptions. I will never understand why steampunk diverted from its original turn-of-the-century sci-fi focus.
Using the works of Jules Vernes, H.G. Wells, E.R. Burroughs, or Danrit makes for far mores interesting settings that the usual "Victorian era with cog magic".

Cogfops can't into inspiration, stylistic consistency or iterations on an evolving design. They don't want reference material, they just want to be part of the latest fad subculture. They don't put any thought into it- there's no inkling that they've considered their design in relation to late-19th/early-20th century sci-fi, just that they've decided that "airship pirates are cool".
