Thats true, plus a lot of body language and facial expression. It's hard to explain, but for the most part you can just tell. Artists don't like for characters to be misinterpreted, so taken together most traits lend themselves to pretty easy identification.

As someone that likes lizardmen but dislike lizard-tit designs (Don't give a fuck about realism, its fantasy, I just think it looks plain bad aesthetically) I have been thinking a fair bit about possible sexual dismorphs. One idea is to do what birds do, since lizardmen often are so dinolike anyway, and have the males be more colorful and "decorated", whit a more subdued color scheme for females.

Females have a much more pronounced goozlum, while in males it's often diminished to the point of vestigiality. This causes the distinctive vermiform bulge we so often associate with distaff saurians. Obviously.
