Mounted on a battlewagon so it needs to be bulky to be fair, the range of this thing means i won't be moving it much anyway

So I was looking at the Leviathan, and I saw this.
I wonder, have they painted some very elaborate thing, or simply slapped some texture paint and painted over it to havr that nice cracked mud look?
>>
>>43644354

It could be painted on. If you look at the back, you notice the cracked paint doesn't lift off the leg and is just flat and 2D.

It's not hard to paint 3D looking chipped paint. The hard part is manually making the crack design and getting such tiny black lines to highlight and shadow the 3D effect.

Look here for how to do it. Simple steps and looks realistic: http://handcannononline.com/blog/2011/07/25/tutorial-advanced-that-one-hurt-painting-battle-damage/

Alrighty WIP boys and girls, what are you painting, converting, or modelling this weekend?

I'm going to finish my Death Korps Platoon Command Squad and then get started on some allies for them out of the Battle at Calth boxes.
>>
Looking for someone that is more versed in modeling than me, what would be the best material to use to create yurts/tents? Would greenstuff be my best option? Looking to create some nomadic structures for my Khorne Bloodbound army. Also looking for suggestions on what structures would fit with a Khorne theme.
>>
>>43644811
use balsa wood dowels for the poles and some sort of paper soaked in white glue for the cloth, drape it over the structure, texture to your liking. you could also try using thin cloth instead of paper. greenstuff is just overdoing it
>>
>>43644844
I have lots of plasticard and rods at my disposal as well. Sounds good, didn't know if using actual cloth or fabric would take away from the models (since everything else is plastic). Is there a certain paper that would work best?
>>
>>43644942
honestly, i have no idea, but paper is cheap enough to experiment with whereas greenstuff would kill any budget you had

About 15 nurgle models. 10 plaguebearers, 1 herald, 1 beast, 3 nurgling swarms.

I'm also working on a GUO conversion from a Slann model, but I've never done this much greenstuff work before, so he'll likely look like shit.

Pic is the general color scheme I'm going with. It's not super complex, but for the level of effort I put in, it looks fairly nice. I've since done a few touchups on this model, so its not indicative of the finished product.

What would be a cool alternate color for Red Scorpions? I just got the BaC box and want to play them, but not sure I want to paint them grey or black since my other army is grey (knights). I was thinking a dark red body with white shoulder pads and white helmets on the apothecaries. Sort of like the Word Bearers color but with more white. Any ideas?

It's crackle paint/medium.
You can get it in all kinds of different variations.
Some you just mix into the paint some you have to paint over before the paint shrinks.
But it's 100% crackle paint.
It'd be an enormeous waste of time to do trompe-l'Å“il if you can get the same result for a few bucks in a bottle.

Here's an example of a guy who even used the GW paints and painted over that before working pigments into the cracks iirc.
>>
>>43646429

Doesn't look the same. It's more random and less purposeful looking.

>>
>>43643859
>giant battlewagon
Won't last more than two turns on the table.
>>
>>43646493
Oh, wow really?
Man... First of all the crackling depends on the paint/medium you use. They are formulated to look a different way. There's a paint branded 'natural' that produces super regular patterns. But it also depends on how you apply them. Where the paint is thickest the crack will be deepest and will usually run in a concentric pattern towards the thickest areas of paint, if you have a lot of 'height variation' in your application.
Which IS a pattern you can make out in both photographs.
As for how 'purposeful' it is looking, well it's no easier or harder to influence that than when you are using a sponge for painting. There's some randomness to it, but you can use that if you know how.
>>
>>43646640
>As for how 'purposeful' it is looking, well it's no easier or harder to influence that than when you are using a sponge for painting

That's why you don't use a sponge and just paint the damage in manually, either with paint or with chipping medium. Did you not realize that was an option?
>>
>>43646671
This is why WIP threads are a double edged sword, man.

I can't tell if you are just dense okay, to be fair maybe just not very knowledgeable about painting or trying to troll.
Either way if you are trying to help this guy with advice, just don't. You'll do more harm than anything else.
Crackle paint is old as fuck and hardly a new thing. Just use google and look up some tutorials on the subject from historical/military modelers.
Those guys are not subjected to GW's misinformation and creative incest. Crackle paint is hardly a new thing nor a novel idea to use on miniatures and models. GW just recently started selling it in conveniently available, but overpriced packages for wargamers.

>>

Heres a quote from Durham_red (the artist) on Heresy 30k

"The Off white was a basecoat of Tamiya Desert Yellow applied with an airbrush, this was then covered with a layer of Tamiya Deck Tan (Airbrush again) leaving the Desert Yellow in what would be the darkest areas. This was then highlighted by adding Tamiya Flat White to the Deck Tan and picking out the lightest areas with the airbrush. This was then given an all over gloss coat of Gloss varnish (I used Halfords Gloss Lacquer) This did two fold things. It stopped my fingers from rubbing off any highlights and it also allowed me to wash Agrax Earthshade in to the recesses without staining the base white colours. After I've finished with the shading I'm going to go back in and highlight the very edges of the armour with Skull White to help define the shapes abit more :)

The Rust effect was a really simple method. After priming the Model Black, I painted on Agrellan Earth (Martian Ironearth would do the same job) and let it do it's thing. Once it was dry and had cracked, I primed it black again and then got on with my airbrushing. After I had glossed the model to protect the white and do the shading, I washed various Oranges, and browns in and around the cracks till I was happy.

Hope that explains everything.

If there is any other questions, Please feel free to ask.

DR"

>>

I would do Leadbelcher and a black wash or two. That is most likely what is going to represent that image best.

Or alternatively if you want something that looks EXACTLY like that image, you can find a grey that looks similar to that and drybrush or highlight with silver but you would have to do some blending NMM techniques on the grey to make it look dull and metallic like that image.

Yeah, I know, but since my 30k Army is a HH era version of my 40k Guard, it feels weird to be allied with traitors, even if they're a group that stayed loyal. It'd also be cool if I could use the models in 40k as well. And lastly I'd want to legion that's in the same segmentum as my Guard (Obscurus).

Only ones I can think of are Iron Hands, DA and SW. Iron Hands I'm not so fond of and DA and SW don't have much in the way of rules at the moment. SW would be nice, since I did think about them way back when I was picking a 40k army and I find some nice conversion potentials there.

This is my current WIP.

A Tau XV-8 to XV-88 conversion.

Basically instead of the new arm weapons I am going to put the weapons on the shoulders like the old one. I removed the thrusters from the back and they will be covered by armor plating(plasticard).
The XV-88 will be in entrenched mode so half of the feet will be cut to simulate going underground.
And in general all the battlesuit will receive armor plating to bulk it up.

My 1st thought was to:
>buy plain white mug
>cover inner part with tape
>maybe add some plasticard spikes/plates in places he won't hold his hands or make gubbins with GS
>spray primer
>paint some checkers, skulls, paint some parts as metal, add rust etc.
>spray several coats of satin varnish
what do anons think about it?

You can still get them from GW, though 4€ or your local equivalent are not really cheap. You can however get that size from most aftermarket sellers that do resin bases.

It's a pretty retro model, from the old Njall Stormcaller metal model. And I will completely own up to this model in particular being pretty silly. That's okay to me as long as it actually LOOKS like he has a bunch of birds flying around him. Is that effect achieved?
>>

I have a lot of spare bitz given to me by friends, so I've been building different captain models to fit different lists.

This guy is gonna be a vanilla captain with a speciifc Raven Guard relic from the Kauyon supplement; Ex Tenebris, a bolter with the following profile: str4/ap5 Assault 3 Rending, Precision shots. I'll run him with a squad of Sternguard or with a command squad, possibly.

Problem there is the new njal raven is fucking huge.

There's the bretonnian hunting falcon, but I think that's for the wrong arm, so you'd have to chop the head off and spin it around. There's also that wood elf character's bird, but it's already in flight.

Guys, do you prefer to put your models together first and THEN paint them, or do you paint first and then put them together? I'm new to 40k and conflicted on how to go about doing this.
>>
>>43666400
Generally you want to have as much of the model together as possible before painting, but weapons that cover the body, shields that get in the way or whatever else that would be hard to paint around are usually kept off and paint separately but at the same time.

Oyumaru is the product that's repackaged/overpriced in the west called instantmold. You can easily buy a lot of it on ebay instead of paying $13 for three bars of it. (and you need plenty of oyumaru if you ever plan on recasting bigger parts, or want to set up batch-molds for a lot of different things.) Unlike Blu Stuff, Oyumaru is easily reusable, so you don't have to just throw your molds out when they start to break down.
