If you're not sure what splat interests you most, you can still learn the core stuff. Here's the old corebook and the god machine chronicle which has rules updates.
NWoD has significantly better mechanics than OWoD so if you don't have your heart set on the lore of a splat, you might as well learn the better one before getting attached to something from he OWoD and then pining forever for things that you cannot have.

I want to run something like a Civilization game on a forum. I´m still not sure whether it´ll be everyone in the forum leading a single civ with me being the GM or if I´ll try to make a whole new forum to organize things from so each player can have his own civilization.

But take a look at The Secret World if you haven´t. It´s an MMORPG, but the lore is quite interesting. Long story short, all the legends, myths and general urban stories are true. The world is fucking filled with all kind of weird creatures and magic.
The Templars and the Illuminati are two of the three factions that try to keep all that a secret from the general population, each for a different reason and with different means.
The gameplay is pretty shitty, as expected of an MMORPG, but the story is quite interesting and the research missions are pretty damn cool.

You can use SendSpace for that.
Go to Sendspace.com, drag in the file to upload and then copy and paste the link. Simple as that, no accounts, no passwords, no nothing. They will even provide you with a deletion link should you decide to get rid of the file. Just don't copy that link to the board, seen that happen before!

The game itself is just a (pretty darn good) adaptation of D&D basic. Great for lethal treasure hunts and gritty low fantasy shenanigans. It includes rules for play in a setting like early modern Europe, but it can do pretty much whatever Moldvay basic can.
The art and official modules are pretty edgy but usually in a tongue in cheek sort of way. Think "80's metal album cover: the game". It often provokes the same reaction in modern tumblrbabies that D&D once provoked in soccer moms and family values nazis, so in that way, I think it's true to form.
