You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!
You sigh as you lean back, letting the warm water of the repair dock flow over your body and up to your chin. Funnily enough, it seemed that the repair dock for shipgirls was basically just a really big hot tub. Apparently, there were "additives" in the water that helped accelerate healing and countered fatigue for shipgirls. At least, that was what you were told when you were whisked in here after your little "accident."
Shit, you were still angry and embarrassed about what happened. Having your boilers explode on you like that in front of all that brass? They'd think you were a fuck up like William D. Porter or something like that! You grumble silently to yourself as you look around to better gauge your surroundings, as you had a feeling this wouldn't be your last time here.

The repair bay was honestly a rather plan looking facility. There was a single large communal pool in the center of the room. On one side of the room were a line of smaller pools, more suited to small groups of may six or so people. On the other side, there were a couple rows of even smaller pools the size of bathtubs, no doubt for shipgirls who wanted to bathe alone. Then there was a door that led to the showers and dressing rooms. In between it all were floors and walls made of nothing but sterile white tile, and thick steam hung in the air, partially obscuring your vision and soaking restorative moisture into your parts not completely submerged.
Captain Takeuchi recommended that you stay in here for at least another 10 minutes to completely heal. You had half a mind to leave and retry the course, but then again, your rig was undergoing priority repair at Shen's workshop...

We need to talk to Dr. Shen to see what went wrong. I'm thinking that our Rig works better when we have our bat with us. Sorta like how armor sets provide bonuses ONLY when the entire set is used. The moment a piece of it is missing, you lose the bonuses. Hell, maybe we're like Tenryuu in that she primarily uses a sword rather than her guns.

"Ah, well, In short, I basically relay long range communications from the base to other ships int he field. I keep everybody up to date on changing objectives and mission conditions and make sure everybody is well informed and connected!"
"So.. .you never fired a shot in combat?" You raise an eyebrow.
"Nope!" Anna says happily.

The two of you quickly shower off the pool water, and you suddenly feel extremely energetic and refreshed. You're no sure what sort of magic those eggheads were working, but it was certainly effective! You walk into the dressing room as you dry off, and notice a fresh uniform neatly folded on the table, a slip of paper with your named clipped to it. You whistle as you unfold it. It was a perfect fit. Either they had done an exceptional repair job, or were really fast workers to make this all from scratch.
"Hey! Are you ready?" Anna asks as she steps out from her dressing room, fully clothed as she levels out her hat on her head.
"Yeah, let's go." You nod.
As the two of you head for Shen's workshop, you notice Anna skipping along, humming that tune of hers again. You wonder if you should ask her about anything else.

At this point you've finally reached the workshop, where as before, you can see various rigs being worked on by maintenance and repair crews. You quickly pick out Shen, who is walking down a line of rigs doing routine checks.
"Hey! Dr. Shen!" You shout and wave. "Is my rig done yet?!"
Shen looks up to see you and Anna, and just silently shakes his head as he approaches.
"Second day on the job and you somehow manage to explode your boilers." Shen gives you a soft glare. "You of all people should now that rigs take time and resources to repair, and these are both things we are always short of! The Admiral ordered and instant repair on your rig, and we've had to use a lot of structural gel to meet deadlines!"
"Structural gel?" You blink in confusion.
"Normally, when we need parts, we fabricate them on site or order them from the mainland." Shen explains. "However, if time is critical, we can 3D print fresh parts, but this uses up valuable structural gel, which we use as the printing base."
"3D printing?" You ask in even more confusion.
"It's j-just a faster way of making parts!" Anna explains in a simpler fashion. "But expensive!"
"Ah." You nod.
"Either way, your rig has been repaired." Shen says. " Do take better care of it next time."
"H-how about mine?" Anna asks meekly.
"Repairs on your rig are about 90% complete." Shen says. "Though we're still doing fine tuning on your phased arrays and satellite uplinks that got knocked out of alignment."

"Ah yes, we did make a few improvements to a number of rigs." Shen nods as he makes adjustments on Anna's right with a screwdriver. "Some of the shipgirls, especially the older ones, have more... 'contemporary' capabilities."
"Well, why can't you slap some of that 'contemporary' shit on my rig?" You ask a bit jealously.
"I wish it were that simple." Shen says somewhat sadly. "But there are many things we have yet to understand about rigs. With your super fast destroyer speed, you make it back to the training course, where you see Heerman and Johnston standing on the shore with their rigs, apparently having just finished their runs. Portland, of fucking course, is there was well, giving you a suspicious glare.
"Take it easy this time." She says with a grin.
You respond a single finger salute before walking up to Captain Takeuchi.
"Hoel reporting for training." You salute.
"I assume Shen has your rig repaired?" The Captain eyes you warily.
"That's what he said." You assure him.
"All right, then head to the starting area. I hope I don't need to repeat instructions."
"No sir." You shake you head as you summon your rig, your ship parts slowly materializing on your back.

"Give 'em hell, Hoel!" Sam grins as she gives you the thumbs up.
You nod wordlessly as you fire up your boilers. Slowly, this time. No sense getting yourself blown up again. You slowly build up momentum, as targets begin to pop up from floating buoys. Instinctively, your fire control radar cues you to fire and you start popping off shots, your training rounds knocking targets down left and right. You slowly begin to pick up speed, weaving through the twisting navigation buoys, keeping both your optics and radar on a close lookout for more targets. Things get a bit tougher as you pick up speed and start maneuvering more, reducing your response time and accuracy. The targets are popping up faster and faster now, and now it's starting to get a little challenging.
And to make things even MORE complicated, your search radar cues you to airborne contacts. You risk a split second to look up and see tiny little drones hovering lazily in the air. You task your rig mounted 5-inch cannon to engage them while you handle the surface targets with your hand mounted cannon.
You finally reach the last stage of the course, where you sail around in a large circle as targets start popping up in a full 360 degree zone. At this point, you're doing constant pivots and reversals to keep your guns in optimal firing angles as drones and targets begin swarming you. It's a slog, but eventually all of the targets go down, and it's just you on the water.

You turn to look back at the shore, where you see your sisters and Sam cheer and whooping loudly. The officers gathered on the bleachers begin hushed discussions among themselves again, and the Admiral gives you an encouraging nod. You felt your heart skip a bit. Somehow that small moment of recognition made it all worth it.
"Very good, Hoel." The Captain says coolly as you glide back to the starting area. "Not exactly the course record, but a solid score, nonetheless."
"Not bad for a second run." Portland says grudgingly.
"While you showed strong proficiency in all areas," the Captain continues, "I do have to commend you for your..."
