Soldier battling in the mines of Ypres during WW1. Found an Abyssal Temple period deep underground, complete with warped cultists praying to a mind-blasting abomination. Was forcibly awoken by the sight and discovered that most major mortal wars were engineered by supernatural powers. Since then went on a quest to stop said influence.
Not going so well.
she was bought from her mother at a very young age by aztechnology and used for experimental gene therapy, mutagenics, and 'ware testing. she survived it, so they jammed a persona fix chip in her head and started using her as an assassin, most typically for wiping out runner teams that had reneged on a deal or played false.
Then on the way back from her last deployment she mustered up all her willpower and slammed her head against the wall of the extraction helicopter as hard as her augmented muscles would allow. It was an attempted suicide, but she only managed to fracture her skull, and short out the chip in her head.
With her, by this point deeply insane, "real" self in control of her body she promptly murdered everyone aboard the helicopter, realized she didn't know how to fly a helicopter, crashed, and limped off into the city slums.
Tiefling that Grew up in slums and turned to crime to survive.
Eventually managed to hire a demon specialist to help him track down the guy who made his bloodline like that, she worked cheap and yadda yadda sappy love story.
Eventually manage to figure out how to contact who they think is the fiend who's responsible for it and contact him.They ended up contacting basically the fiend version of Trazyn the Infiniteand he offered to make him a warlock because he needs an errand boy.
Well, he and his GF get captured by rival criminals, she dies, he spontaneously manifests mind bullets and slaughters them by accepting the offer, and now he's traveling the world looking for magical items to send to his boss.Who also has his GF safe and sound in his collection because who else can claim to have BOTH halves of a pair of star-crossed lovers?

Graduated from med school, enlisted as a medic and became a pretty good doctor, saw some shit and got nightmares, war ended, went back and became a regular working doctor, screwed up an operation on someone important (partly due to nightmares) and got kicked out of her clan, wandered around the outer colonies healing people and became a really good doctor, got hired by a privateer and became a really fucking good doctor. Privateer died, party consists of the people who decided to keep privateering. Apart from doctoring, knows how to operate sensors on the spaceship, some ranged and melee combat, and not totally incompetent at a lot of not very useful skills.

Angsty Aberrant Sorcerer half human and half...something else. Adopted by an Elven Colony and raised there, manifesting creepy powers, eventually found his girlfriend cheating on him, accidentally killed her rather brutally, and fled, joining a Heroes Guild.
Really powerful magic but he occasionally has delusions of grandeur and goes on rants about his magic being older and deeper than the petty tricks others can do.
Using magic changes his appearance briefly, hands look like tentacles, several more pairs of eyes appear on his face, nose sinks into his face, etc.

Human fighter with a background as a soldier. Grew up in the peasant village of Bumfucknowhere and would've been a proud but miserable citizen of Bumfucknowhere til death until men-at-arms sent by the lord who technically ruled the patch of mud conscripted him and a few other serfs to fight a rebellion. It didn't go too well. The retinue who trained him into a reasonably hardy fighter wound up destroyed in the war and now he's without a lord or a home.

A British-Danish razorgirl who used to run an actual merc company with his twin brother, until another PC who is a corp exec got her brother killed and her crippled for life. The exec then "saved" her by calling in his corp, who managed to keep her alive and fitted her with cyberlegs, four cyberarms and enough chrome to satisfy a troll.
The executive then got burned by his corp, and took my character and another experiment PC with him.

He's a historian from a thousand or so years into the future, who's also a member of a secret cult/police force that scouts the time stream for trouble.
One night while going over old records, he noticed a gap in the history of the Nine Hells, around the time a major event happened there. However, no records of the event, it's outcome, or even the aftermath could be found, as if they flat-out didn't exist.
Armed with only his strong will, his intelligence, the best future weapons and future tech money could buy, and his vast array of psionic time manipulation powers, he was sent back to record the history of what exactly happened in Hell, during a time Asmodeus himself was rumored to be in mortal danger from usurpers.
Started off as a bumfuck farmboy in the middle of nowhere in bumfuck nowhere, The North Family was attacked by a roving war band, parents killed, remainder of the family enslaved. He spent a lot of time working as a pit fighter before slaying his captors, tackling his main tormentor into a burning tent while his sisters escaped. Managed to survive, but was horrifically burned and disoriented. I'm playing a Barbarian to match his brutal combat style, but he remains in his heavy armor to hide the burns. He's not particularly angsty about it, but isn't too keen on showing people the burns or taking off his armor in front of others. He's proceeded to take down several major baddies mostly solo, including a giant worm, giant spider, completely decimating the influence of three major slaving rings (Freeing 3 of his family members in the process) and acquiring a lot of peasants that stay and keep the party base (His new family longhouse) in shape. I can do story time if people are interested.
The Valerius and Seneca have had a blood feud since times immemorial. Well his father was a great merchant by anybody's standard, but the Seneca wouldn't have any of that shit so they took him out to strike a blow against the Valerius' profits.
Only a child, he was stricken with grief and rage at the loss of his father. He devoted his entire effort to avenge his father and bring honor back to his family's name. He was trained in the art of manipulation, intrigue and assassination to track and kill his father's killer.
Years go by and he succeeds in his mission, but where does he go from there? Well, like any Assassin he decides to sell his skills for money and literally only cares about money and prestige.
Eventually he gets a mission for some shady dude on Iocanthos. He arrives there and is shortly picked up by the Inquisition since they are also hunting him down for interrogation, but not assassination. He is then forced to work as an Acolyte under some slightly lenient, but not radical Inquisitor.

They're the grandson of a demigod, hidden by their grandfather because someone made a prophecy that he would inherit his family line's divine power in full. He was raised in the woods far from civilization, where Grandpa constantly pushed him to improve himself and taught him martial arts, so when the moment came when he did become a god, he had the knowledge and purpose to defend himself.

Considering that adult adoption is still a thing in Japan, they were probably more common than in Europe. And they were probably than just viewed as real sons. But I don't think that japanese where keen on adopting random kids from the street either and only looked for capable people.
Born in a barbarian tribe of the "savage lands", he spent his early life has a soldier for one of the petty warlords who flights for control of the fertile lands around an ancient necropolis. Eventually he get fed up with all the infighting between the tribes and deserted, learn that his people are descents of a long dead civilization and wanders around the more civilized western lands in search of answers. He's a savage skald that travels from village to village and brings about news and stories of his travels. For now the BBEG is some unknown necromancer responsible for several undead attacks on farms and villages but we haven't met him yet.

Family partially turned him into a Drider. Fled to the surface, which broke the fucked up enchantment.

Hill giants move in, everyone but him dies in surprise assault at night (He was out of town on a delivery for the town.); enlisted in local militia and then conscripted into military. Hill giants dead, fiefdom goes to war, his side lost. Roams around with the remains of the battle standard he carried wrapped around his Earth Breaker looking for work and offering his jeweling/tinkering and mining expertise. ...then the campaign began.

Robot with amnesia, who eventually found out he is actually a perserved soul inside a robot and they he got amnesia from being shot in the head and losing some of the magic juice that his memories were preserved in.
During his half-braindead wanderings he bumped into a bro fighter and wound up being his tag-team partner. After brofighter died in a terrorist attack on a zeppelin which was actually more 30% their fault and 70% the fault of some other jerk, he swore revenge and set off on a quest. Instead, he wound up getting bagged by a NSA as fuck government for sneaking into an embassy to get information, but luckily that same government ALSO wanted deniable assets to go shut down said terrorists.
After various convoluted adventures, involving defeating an eldritch abomination, rescuing his robot sister-in-law from a brothel, getting frendzoned, preventing a nuclear strike at a sporting event, and becoming the grand champion of said sporting event, he and his party died in Armageddon after the pope, who turned out to be bankrolling the terrorists, ended the world prematurely by invoking the setting's enraged child god creator/destroyer.
Now in the afterlife, he and his companions manage to pass various challenges, and in the end comfort the god, and convince her to turn back time.
In the end, he was granted his original body by a perky succubus who got it refunded to him in karma court for all the suffering he'd endured.
All in all, pretty good campaign of two or so years, ended yesterday.

The what now?
Grew up in a pirate port run by crime lords. Family ran an inn and she was a barmaid/bouncer
She bounced the wrong crimelord's favored flunkies and had to flee to another crimelord for protection
She works for the high priestess of prostitutes as bouncer /errand girl/ knee breaker
She enjoys intimidating and hurting others so much that she receives priestess training to work as a dominatrix for special clients
Eventually a church matter (plot from a previous campaign) has her moving halfway across the continent to deliver a message that they can't trust magic to deliver
Instead of going home she sets up a new brothel/temple and rakes in the high class money from the elves wanting a little strange
Wanna be knight convinces one of her girls to run away with him, he wants to make a name form himself in a crusade
They rob the temple and she starts hunting the two of them down, the girl is indentured property until she can pay back the cost of her training, plus the stuff they stole
She catches up to them on at holy festival where all the new knights are getting honored. As she finds them demons burst in and everything goes to shit, most of the city is slaughtered.
She decided to make the best of it, she is going to capture demons, hopefully a matched pair of incubus and succubus, and have the most exclusive brothel in existence, displacing her former boss as high priestess

He traveled with his father when he was very young as his father was a elf historian, elves were almost genocided a thousand years ago, his father died during a dungeon delve and the boy lived alone in a strange country for a few years in the wilderness eventually his mother and two brothers tracked him down. He spent a century training and studying in his home country found a wife. Now she's gone into isolation for a century to master her arcane skills. He went back into the world to pick back up his fathers work. Spending a few months murderhoboing around in the frozen wastes while he searches through ruins and stuff is really like no time at all for him when he will effectively live for over a thousand years.

My character was was given everything she ever needed (not wanted) as a child. Her family was not royalty, but still nobility; they have some sway in politics and a coat of arms featuring a black goat. Her parents loved her, even if they were often busy with... whatever it is nobles do all day. Unusually, she was closer to her parents than to her one younger sister. Her sister is devout; she doesn’t see why she should worship a god that’s never helped her. Her sister is charming and good at getting people to do what she wants; she's not willing to put in the effort.
My character is no longer with her [supposedly] pure-bred human family because she started manifesting signs of orcish heritage (not enough to qualify as half-orc, but enough that people would notice) as a teen. Panicking, she tried to use alchemist's fire to remove the rough, greenish-gray patches of skin from her right cheek and brow, but ended up removing half her face and drifting in and out of consciousness for a week while clerics tended to her, trying everything they could at her parents’ expense. When she awoke she could not see from one side of her face, and it still burned.
It’s hard to fix semi-magical burns, especially in a growing adolescent. The scars never healed correctly and she permanently has only one working eye. Her parents were ashamed of the incident, and after a series of escalating arguments they strongly encouraged her to move to a monastery, convent, or other out-of-the-way place, and passed her inheritance and future title on to her younger sister. She thinks they are ashamed of her.
On her way to said convent, she broke away from her guards and raced into the forest, quickly becoming lost. She was found by a druid who decided to take her on as an apprentice.
My character uses Wild Shape liberally to fight, to feel whole again, and as a way of figuratively running away from her past.
Big barbarian guy was drafted into the army, basically people point him toward the enemy and hope he doesn't come back towards our lines. Army folks got tired of his nightly drunken rages, fighting with people all the time, etc. So one day they don't wake him up when they break camp (every morning someone was forced to punch him in the face until he was awake, then run away. Usually as punishment for something).
Barbarian wakes up, finds himself surrounded by what looks suspiciously like an absence of army, and assumes that some fuckers snuck into the camp and completely destroyed the army while he was asleep, and has spent the rest of his life trying to get revenge on the people who killed his buds, joined party to further that quest.
Thanks to the help of other PCs, he currently believes that the perpetrators are either a roving band of highly skilled mercenary gnomes or some treants. The latter suspicion has caused some problems for the party.

Visionary doctor grown to old for his hands. Still holding to his oath to save lives he turned to religion, devoting the remainder of his life to saving as many people as he can before his time is up.
Hands where visibly quite shaky and he had problems holding things, had a pretty touching moment when he had ran out of spells and was telling the wizard exactly what he needed to do to save the fighters life.
I liked it, game ended far sooner than desired.

Big, mean looking orc barbarian who spent most of his youth doing orc shit with his orc tribe until some elf they captured introduced the concept of gambling to the lugs, ended up ruining the tribe with their gambling addiction. Orc barb decides to fuck off with the elf, because fuck those weakling orcs who cant handle a card game, and proceeds to do some low-level adventuring to make bank, all while learning the finer points of not being an ass-backwards savage and the virtues of at least making an effort to be civilized. Fast forward a few decades and the orc barb has a wife and daughter, works at his wife's tavern, and decides that he wants his daughter to be educated so she can live a better life than the relative bumpkin lifestyle he's had his whole life. Cue him buggering off to the mountains bordering his old orc homelands in search of adventurin' loot to pay for the very best education his daughter can get.

She was raised in a cult of Loviatar (D&D 4e, so it had no power). Disapproving of the gratuitous cruelty, she ratted them out to the guards at age 18, and then went off to become a caravan guard, and build up her own power.
Transport captain in the Star Wars universe; used to be a smuggler working for the Hutts until a dispute over missed payments lead to her sending her boss a two-weeks-notice-thermal-detonator. Now a freelancer, trying to keep flying and keep her crazy crew from making her lose her mind.

the parties rogue makes himself out to be an assassin and slight of hands all the food i give him into a purse while pretending to eat it, complimenting my food which he then uses to kill targets for cash.
everyone else just avoids my food.

My family's sniping dojo was destroyed in a tragic space bug related accident of which I was one of only a handful of survivors.
Thanks to the influence of my uncle I made it into the tryouts for the emerald legion but my squad got detoured from the live fire training exercise we were meant to be going to in order to serve as meat shields for an emerald magistrate team that were in deep shit.
One pressganging later I am now a member of both the secret police and the secret secret police as part of a black ops trouble shooting team acting as the strong right hand of the emperor. Which is not bad seeing as so far no one has noticed that for a supposedly expert sniper I can't actually snipe worth a damn.
