>When experiments testing the viability of tapping into the quantum vacuum for energy were performed on the Apollo 21 Lab Station, reports devolved into strange ramblings about how their conclusions were inconceivable to human minds. Before all communication ceased, garbled messages were sent to earth from the astronauts about their experiments revealing to them the "howling face of the sun." A rescue crew was violently repulsed from the station by corpses in the astronaut's space suits. Footage of the incident show ghostly images of tormented figures hanging just behind these corpses, struggling, but seemingly unable to pull themselves apart from their decaying bodies.

Though a number of monster trainers boast one of these formidable creatures in their service, none have yet been able to recount precisely how, when, or where they first made contact with the being, and this is by far not the only mystery surrounding the Abathrael. Much of its mass produces no energy signature, passes through conventional matter at will and evades any attempt at direct analysis, but it carries with it a headless, sexless, nonliving hominid body of otherwise unremarkable composition. Destruction of this body temporarily dissipates the Abathrael, but documented specimens have subsequently remanifested with replacements from an indeterminate source.
An Abathrael is prone to invasive cognotransmissive contact with other sentient beings, picking through their memories and reacting unpredictably to its findings. It has been known to repair injuries and eradicate diseases in even those who threaten its allies, or turn its burning ocular ray upon its own master to "expunge impurities." Its booming, cryptic riddles and multilingual gibberish offers few clues to its origins or purpose, but several key words and phrases recur in its ramblings with some consistency:

I always like my angels on the right side of scary. Otherworldly, celestial, awe-inspiring, righteous and frightening or just very, very strange - but not outright eldritch abominations since they are divine and at the end of the day, on the side of good. I feel that's what demons are as fallen angels, visually reminiscent of the angels they were, but stripped of moderation. Angels in excess. If Seraphs are blazing celestial fires with wings to cover themselves lest their glorious forms destroy the mortal that gazeth upon them, then a fallen Seraph would have lost its wings or moved them so that now they cover barely nothing or in fact focus the searing light. Or the wings are open and there's no fire, just freezing ashes.
