story?

SJW on some college campus organised a protest againt god knows what and didn't want any journalists there to film it. When the camera man refused to leave because he had a right to be there, it was a public space after all, the SJW demanded he leave. He refused. She started calling out for "some muscle" to force the guy off the campus.
>>
>>43605232
She's an assistant professor of Journalism at Mizzou that tried to censor a journalist, by "calling for muscle".

It's funny, the ethics training at my work always says "Don't do anything you'd be ashamed of if it was on the news, or if your parents heard about it"

Guess she didn't get that one.

She herself would have comparatively low stats. The journalism field as a social science isn't terribly rigorous (in my own work in another field I've become acquainted with their research). The theoretical sophistication is pretty weak (drawn from sociology and social psychology) and the stats competence is very poor. Mainly it's a clinical field that's slowly morphed into another "activism studies" major.

I'd give her the Fanatic disadvantage, probably Intolerance and maybe Short Tempered. Then load her up with academic Rank, allies, contacts, status, and reputation. Plus Patron (University). The students make a perfect ally group.

In WoD she'd have allies, contacts, mentor, and resources... but again, low attributes and abilities.

Note that the journalist was a freelancer working for a newspaper, but also was a student at the school. His video shows a group of students and professors (including the chairman of the religious studies dept) jeering at him, blocking his camera, and then finally assaulting him while Professor Click looks on.

Actually, she had a courtesy appointment to the Journalism school in addition to her assistant professorship in communications. It was the courtesy appointment that was cancelled, but she's still a professor there and is still on the tenure track (if you scroll down the article explains this).

So basically they didn't fire her, they "fired" her as a PR ploy.

In game terms, it means that she's gained two equal and opposed Reputations. Among SJW-type activists, she has a positive reputation as a principled soldier in the fight against racism. Among news junkies and people who care about civil liberties, she's now got a strong negative reputation.

But since she hasn't actually lost her job, perks, or research grants, I'd rule as a DM that her other social stats haven't changed following this incident.

I'm actually thinking of writing rules for propaganda wars. This kind of descent-into-fascism storyline is very popular.

In sci fi, you have the V miniseries, Babylon 5, and some interpretations of the starship troopers movie. In Shadowrun and other cyberpunk settings, widespread propaganda comes up all the time.

In modern fantasy, you have Vampire: the Masquerade. Mage the Ascension is all about getting ordinary people to change their views about reality. There's the X-files and some Cthulu/Illuminati type games where you have cover-ups and propaganda ploys. Consider how many conspiracy theorists scream, "but it was all a LIE, you have to BELIEVE me!" Essentially they're trying to counter propaganda with the truth in the public's mind.

In straight-up modern, of course, you have War on Terror and Cold War storylines. Anything involving the run-up to World War 2, anywhere. Anything involving a political campaign. During the War in Iraq, Bush and the democrats fought over whether the war was right, and also whether the WMD intelligence was faked or simply wrong. Dick Cheney was critical of anti-war protesters, which lead to claims that America was descending into fascism. In the modern age, we have accusations of mass surveillance, government prosecutions of political opponents, and of course these racial protests on college campuses.

Oddly, Paranoia doesn't really lend itself to this.

Anyway, I think propaganda and social movement rules would be a nice niche mechanic for an RPG. Ideally you could get a system that's pretty modular that you could plug into D&D, GURPS, WoD, ShadowRun, etc, via skill tests.

>Paranoia doesn't really lend itself to this.
It's got the Treason Damage shit in the Mongoose Editions, and Straight actually uses it.

GURPS probably has it in a supplement somewhere.
>>
>>43607001

I haven't seen the mongoose edition, so I'll have to check it out. Sadface at the idea of playing w/ mongoose's game mechanics.

GURPS has only very crude rules in Social Engineering, mostly because the focus of that supplement is person-to-person social interaction.
>>
>>43607137
What's wrong with the Goose? It's not d20, if that's what you're worried about.

Treason Damage is handled exactly the same way as regular damage: Take the base damage dealt, decrease it a number of steps based on your armour, then increase it x steps, where x is the amount you rolled over the to-hit number, divided by the step size of the attack.

I don't think it's for large-scale propaganda wars, though you might be able to hack it and Oratory together.

GURPS has skills for making speeches, and there might be something in either Boardroom & Curia or City Stats.

It's actually just narrative control 101. Every side does it. Including yours.
