My recent love for Nichijou has made me wonder: has there been any successful attempts at slice of life RPGs at all? Like they don't even have to be set in a present day like setting, but just be slice of life. Also thanks to the anon here on /tg/ who recommended I watch the show a few days back.

Slice Of Life often shows life as more simple and cute as opposed to IRL that's so busy and hectic. Don't see anything wrong with SoL being escapism. Nothing better than popping open a beer and watching Nichijou after a hard day at work.

you're gonna call me crazy, but my dm ran a rogue trader game like a slice of life anime once. it was all about the basic running of the ship, or keeping the astropath from freaking out at the sight of every new group aboard, or stopping the enginseer prime and arch militant from adding seven more turrets to the command deck. playing the trader myself, I ended up in the straight-man role to everyone else's antics. 10/10 run, would play again.

I'm unsure if I would put Nichijou firmly into SoL slot. Anyone who's seen it knows there's a strong vein of absurd humor running through it.

But as for running SoL adventures, I'll second/third/etc Golden Sky Stories and Chuubo's.

It's a weird one, at first.

It's a very versatile game for telling stories about people through some form of growth/change. Gaining XP necessarily involves pursuing that personal evolution/revolution within the context of the kind of game the characters take part in. There are many feedback loops in the game, where one thing builds into another which escalates the first, and so on. Play momentum flows from the mechanics eventually even with inexpert play.

I wish I could remember where the examples of play went...

And now the young head priestess of their death cult and a couple of the knights that had sworn to serve, defend, and eventually kill her catch the last ship out to Town.
That's... Not a tone I was expecting given the snippets I heard about it. Like, at all.
This is going to be interesting, in part because suicidal cult priestess is muh fetish
>>
>>43604004
Hah! Yes.

The game's "pastoral genre" isn't as limiting as it can at first seem. It just means that, generally, and *especially* while everyone's still getting used to the game, the big moments in every segment of play are going to be about:

having someone (ideally another PC) come by while you're tidying up, or making a dream catcher, or gutting some fish or something (or the other way around), and maybe deciding to do it together, or maybe there's some teaching going on, or maybe one party's just watching because it's neat. And you connect over it.

Or... Expressing thoughts and feelings about WHATEVER to someone, ideally making yourself a little vulnerable (or, again, the reverse).

Or just being in the world, and experiencing it, and emoting a response and holding that moment in your mind/heart, and letting that feeling colour your world for a little while.

And these are the moments that play structures itself around, even if you are doing such ridiculous things as, e.g. standing trial for the crimes of the Is against the Is Not, or doing battle with a god, or freeing a child from being consumed by his own nightmares.

A slice of life space anime would be awesome.

>Protagonist is a bartender on a space ship
>Just spends every night serving drinks to the crew
>Every night/episode, one character in particular adresses the bartender and tells him what happened to him that day
>Cue story-within-story sequence that takes up most of the episode
>A few of the characters are recurring, such as the female marine, the captain, the gunner etc.
>Over time these stories reveal more and more about these recurring characters
>The captain is battling severe depression, the gunner is worried about whether or not he can send his sone to college, the female marine often exaggerates her exploits to impress the bartender

KyoAni will make it happen and save anime once again.

Other than the Elvish princess, those are all examples of normal people with weird lives. Remember, we're talking about Maid RPG here.

I guess what I should be saying is that Maid RPG chargen is too consistently weird for Nichijou, and that the random events mechanics are not consistently weird enough.

>>43612432
Only Ika Musume could classify as "absurd".

The main character is a humanoid squid. Secondary characters include a team of American scientists that, amongst other stuff, cured cancer and developed an universal translator... and promptly discarded all that because it doesn't help them hunt aliens.

Hell if I can find it. Maybe it was a screencap and not a copypasta, or maybe it was just a one-time-post that caught my eye, but it involved a newlywed Seki and Rumi consummating while Seki was... well... being Seki and goofing off with something stupid and irrelevant.

Doing things like playing tic-tac-toe with himself on her stomach in magic marker.

Then it said that he kept doing that sort of shit every time they had sex, and then she got used to it until playing a stupid game like that eventually became equivalent to foreplay.

Heck, maybe I dreamt it. I don't know.

When the game was being Kickstartered, there was an enthusiastic post put on /tg/ which came across as some serious shilling, as they clearly had little experience with /tg/ culture.. I'm not sure whether further posts were made by the same person (I quite doubt it), but the original OP was copy-pasted many times over the following month-(ish) period, rarely with any more detailed discussion, description, explanation, or what have you being provided by the person starting the thread.

Regardless, ill will was spread. Some of it was "rules lite reeee" (which is funny, since I don't think I know of a "storygame" heavier than Chuubo's), but the posts were no fiction and did not help one bit.

>>43620537
The game highly incentivizes that kind of play, and some of the mechanics are designed to help the players to actively engage with one-another.

Quests, by their nature, demand that you play in a very particular way in order to further your character's story, which plays an essential role in forming the events of the game everyone interfaces with. Attached is certainly the most eccentric Quest I've seen (and the only one I can find online with a fully-prepared Quest Card). Even more normal Quests make characters heavily proactive even if all their Players do is consult their Quest Cards for clues on what to do next.
>>
>>43620956
It's not just that.
Liike, in >>43615274 how the characters play off one another, the whole "opening credits" sequence. This is just much more engaged than what I've seen in my online games. A part of it is shorter and thus faster back and forth - all online I've played tended towards more elaborate and longer posts, but ended kinda stand-offish towards the actions of others due to that length.

>>
>>43621002
Oh! I see what you mean. I guess that comes down to understanding the medium better. Short, evocative description and snappy dialog are virtues little-known in much of our modern written media.

>>43619216
Let's see...

In one game of the "soon"-to-be-released campaign that I was in, the Best Friend was helping a large sheepdog to live its dream of riding down a hill on a bike by carrying it on his back. The Wishing Boy was helping out with steadying the bike while the Best Friend climbed on. He then did the opposite of helping by jumping on after, earning him a head-desk XP while the two boys and dog careened rapidly and uncontrollably toward the docks.

In another scene, on the docks, the Child of the Sun and the Nightmare Scientist had met up early, the one Because she was wandering, lonely, and being upset at the new sun in its rise, and the other because he's too mature to sleep in on a day where he technically has work to do. The two of them had a bit of a moment while the Child of the Sun expressed her bitterness at the cold of the world below the sky, and the impertinence of the new sun. The Nightmare Scientist, compassionately, restrained his bombast and did not explain his hand in that sun's presence.

Both scenes ended as one, with all parties tumbling into the lake except for the dog, who wisely evacuated the bicycle before it went off the docks.

This marked the second time in a week that the Nightmare Scientist nearly drowned in Big Lake.

In the same game, the same week, I believe, the cast were watching and cheering on as the sun set at their back, a giant Nightmare robot fighting some other giant monster. Enjoying the leisure time with friends, the Wishing Boy wished that things could be like this forever.
>>
>>43621573
> a giant Nightmare robot fighting some other giant monster
>the Wishing Boy wished that things could be like this forever.
Oh shit.
>>
>>43621573
The next week consisted of the Dream Witch's tea shop suffering from the sun not having succeeded at setting for several days (which no proper sun woulddo, per her house mate's faux-old-person stodginess), while the Wishing Boy learned how to be a good waitress.

The Nightmare Scientist, the Child of the Sun, and the Best Friend instead took a ride aboard the scientist's Nightmare Catamaran on a metaphysical journey that transformed the vehicle into the Barque of the Sun, in order to see the sun set and make a non-horrific resolution to the Wishing Boy's wish.

I'll see if I can remember any other fun stories later.

Golden Sky Stories is in no way SoL, it relies far too much on accomplishing objectives. SoL by its nature has no topic other than "something which is part of the more or less daily life of the characters involved".
By the way, Nichijou is awful garbage.

How can SoLs even be, for lack of a better term, "gamed"?
I mean, I look at a typical episode of, say, Gochiusa and don't see how could you make that a game.
>>
>>43624222
Delinquent manga could perhaps be gamed, since fighting and factionism and such is more or less part of the daily lives of delinquents. Someone gives you lip so you decide to bust it, then you have to run away so no teacher catches you in the act. Shit like that. Days ends, you go home, tomorrow is a new day with new "objectives". Could perhaps work with the right people, but it sounds difficult.

>Monster Hearts
monster hearts is not a slice of life game, it is not really a game at all. it is a "being a faggot simulator". The mechanics of monster hearts is that you get to experience the awful experience of coming out of the closet, repeatedly, over and over again. How it works is that you start off not knowing your gender orientation. Other players then need to seduce you, to do that they "turn" you to their orientation. So the guy to my left is playing a werewolf faggot and I am a straight vampire, he rolls to turn me gay. he succeeds, now i get to come out of the closet. Now the faggot to my right is playing a female gorgon, she rolls to turn straight again. She succeeds, now I am straight again.

The goal of the game is to "explore" alternative sexuality and become a more tolerant SJW
>>

I never played fatal either but I read parts of its rulebook for a laugh. The monster hearts rulebook says you are not allowed to determine your own sexual orientation and flat out decline faggotry. Instead your fellow faggots roll to turn you. It is the dumbest most retarded faggot simulator ever

Oh, thanks for explaining what reading is! I'd heard about it but didn't think it wa's really worth learning more about. If such an obviously well-balanced and smart person such as you recommends it I'll find some books about it.

But then...wait, to use the books, I need to already....aw, shit.

They are about death cultists leaving after their world ended and another is about two gods possessing their priests to go have shenanigans, but are really about activities they do and things they feel rather than overcoming monsters and junk, so it's slice of life.

They get XP for evoking feelings in scenes, for evoking characteristic reactions from other players, for completing goals that aren't overcoming some villain out there.

Does anyone have a Chuubo PDF they could share? It looks like an interesting game.

That's not how the Turn Someone On move works at all. It's also not how Monsterhearts works at all, but you've already established that reading comprehension is not one of your strengths.

The pdf is huge so it can't be attached, being nearly 600 pages, but this is the link I believe I got it from:

>Doing things like playing tic-tac-toe with himself on her stomach in magic marker.
This is both hot and especially if it was during the actual act.

Stomach bulging is my fetish.

I guess that confirms that growing up raised by American parents living abroad makes me not an American. I'm okay with this.

it's one of those self sustaining problems.
I have nobody to reccomend me HYPE ASS BOOKS, so I have no hype ass books to reccomend.

I mean, when I find something good, I devour the entire series in short order.

Take badwiki's recommendations with a grain of salt, but all those examples are probably from people with the same interests, so there's no harm in givan 'em a try.

well, let's hope I can get my hands on 'em.

last time I got interested in a book series, the library was never able to ship the copy all the way from central to my public so I could check it out

For a personal, Anon-to-Anon recommendation, I'd recommend starting with the Earthsea books.

Seriously, Chuubo's writing is incredible. Jenna Moran is ridiculously underrated.

You expect one thing from her and get another. It's a game about slice-of-life stuff, and it advertises itself like that, but like most things in her writing there's a lot about death and nonexistence and horror. Seriously, the setting starts off by the brutal murder of the Angel of the sun (who is the sun itself, too), and the main antagonist is Death.

Town (particularly Fortitude) is way too good a setting. Where else are you going to get a culture of dramatic swashbuckling adventurer rats that fight against weird and wicked god-monsters?

Never happening, it flopped in Japan

You can thank the nips and their godawful dogshit taste for that

I tend to like games that have a mix of slice of life and drama/plot/combat. The slice of life makes the combat and drama feel all the more impactful, and the dangerous stuff makes the character's normal lives feel all the more precious.

It's not (just) a matter of taste. It was in the wrong place at the wrong time -- it started airing literally a day after the Tohoku earthquake. Then when the DVDs came out, they were ridiculously overpriced because of a weird experimental format. I think KyoAni being on their post-K-ON!! power trip may have had something to do with the marketing failure, too.

Because it flopped in Japan, I can imagine licensing fees would be less for a publishing company over here in the US. All it needs for an NA release is for somebody to realize that people want it.

>>43634123
Bandai Entertainment licensed it actually, but their operations folded before release.

No one wants to play a slice of life game for 4 hours a week when they're eating a whole fucking pie every other hour of every other day.
>>
>>43635338
wait, who is eating a whole fucking pie every other hour of every day
Where do I go to get that many pie
>>
>>43635338
Ehh, playing a lifestyle different from yours is legit.

Even then, SoL generally means focusing on emotions of every moment rather than just murderhoboing.
You may SoL dungeon crawl.

This pie is shit though, give me a better one
