He most likely had some form of assburgers or at the very least was an introvert, plus a few realistic phobias, and the asshole officers showed just how enlightened humanity had become by incessantly making fun of him for it. It surely didn't help that his therapist was the worst person in Starfleet.

Why was Troi even allowed in Starfleet? How did she end up on a ship more competent people of her profession would have given their right hand for?
Why did nobody call her out on her bullshit "do the test 50 or 60 times till I pass it by accident and become officer" bullshit?
Why did nobody notice that she went all to shit (shiter, whatever) when she had her powers cut off and had to be merely human?
Why did nobody point out that most of the time when her powers were in use they were a liability?
Why was she never called out on the fact that she was in a sexual relationship with a superior officer?
Why did nobody call her out on spewing mockery of mentally unstable colleagues?

Also I just noticed that Picard was the only person not to show contempt towards him.
On the episode with ghosts in the transporter Picard listens to his complaints with a perfectly straight and stern face and your thinking "Barkley is going to get a severe lecture on that he should pull himself together and buck up. Because that always works on anxiety issues". Instead Picard orders the transporter switched off, disassembled and every component thoroughly examined.
Its one of the few instances of the crew not shitting on him.

Barcley episodes helped me realize just how inhuman and "wrong" the entire setting was.
I mean holy shit these people are supposed to be "enlightened beings" yet they operate like robots. There were alien races with more humanity than Humanity. Maybe Data *was* acting human, but the human officers in the show were incapable of actually recognizing Data's creepy impersonation was spot-on to how they behaved.
It really turned me off from Star Trek's vision of the future because of that. A future where you need "empaths" to recognize non-verbal cues anyone nowadays could pick up is not a future I want to live in.
Seriously, the Klingon is loud and angry so Troi, in her infinite wisdom, says "I sense anger" and the bridge crew listens to her like she's actually saying something that wasn't obvious.

Not to defend Troi, but since Klingons are loud and angry all the time, it would be difficult to tell if they are actually angry. Bit like when I saw a group of Spanish exchange students talking. It sounded to me like they would be punching each others in any moment, but probably were just talking where to eat lunch.

She's good when she's doing the light comedy, non-serious stuff. Typically that means she's off-duty. Any time she's supposed to be serious, then that's where the writers fuck up massively and have no real idea how to use the character. Hell, they even have Guinan doing the counsellor job better than Troi every single time she shows up.
It's one of those things I think they got stuck with as a very '80s idea, and never managed to fix. Troi was supposed to be something like a diplomatic aid and first contact expert but got stuck with being useless because they focused on the empath part.

This really only holds true for TNG seasons 1&2 and then sometimes not even then. But you can mostly blame Gene Roddenberry directly for that. Once he got shoved upstairs and then into an early grave, characters became people.

Season 2 bullshit in action. Still that was not even as bad as the horrifically racist Irish in the same episode, because the clone-shooting thing could at least be argued as aborting a baby that was the result of rape, given the circumstances.

Seriously that one has almost all the worst stories. I mean, it has the Outrageous Okana as well as space Irish stereotypes and Troi's rape baby.
Thank whatever deity that decided to grace it with Q-Who? and the Measure of a Man because those two alone pretty much saved the entire thing.
