So I'm working on building up a Renegades & Heretics list from the Vraks book using the Purge detachment with the Ordnance Tyrant. That lets me use artillery for Elites and Troops slots as well as Heavy slots. With 8 troop slots and 4 elites slots, that should give me enough room to fit a ton of artillery in. What else should I look at getting for these guys? I keep hearing good things about rapier laser batteries. Are they as good as people say? Cheap ordnance at BS2 or 3 if I upgrade them. Should I stuff most of my heavy slots with those?

Sisters of Battle are mildly competitive, but never get new models.
Orks get plenty of new models, but they're awful on the table if the player doesn't know every trick available to them.

I would have thought at this stage all CSM players would have stopped playing the vanilla dex, and just play Crimson Slaughter instead.
>>
>>43578368
Majority of rumors seem to indicate a Tzeentch Daemonkin Codex with a new plastic Lord of Change. But it's best to be cautiously optimistic since we've been hearing rumors along those lines for a few years now.

But from my own sources (who I admit aren't always reliable) it seems like Tyranids are the next 40k release (excluding the Tau campaign stuff).
>>
>>43578904
>I would have thought at this stage all CSM players would have stopped playing the vanilla dex, and just play Crimson Slaughter instead.
I know 8 people from 3 different playgroups who play CSM, and literally every single one of them plays Crimson Slaughter.

I actually thought people automatically refer to that when talking about CSM. Isn't it basically CSM 6.5?
>>
So /tg/, do you have a list you think would be fun as hell, that you for some reason haven't played yet? And why haven't you done so yet?

Its as close to a real codex were going to get.
All the csm players in my area have quit.
We all know that new codex is going to be an uninteresting flop of blandness and lol-so-randum.

Bet you a shiny nickel that legions wont be addressed, tzeentch is still the worst, our land raider varients dont exist, and we'll still have shitty walkers instead of the superior mcs.

Anyone who thinks it wont be a reprint is fucking retarded.

Does anyone else really wish there were more armor marks in Marine kits? This pic from one of the old codexes shows marines with almost even distribution of armor pieces from marks 2 through 8, whereas most kits only have parts from a few. And what ones you get are really random. Like why do we get so many mk5 chests and then none of any other part? Why half of the heads and legs mk6 but no chests and only left shoulders? Why a single mk8 chest and nothing else?
>>

You had to be in that thread. Apparently calling somebody a rooster in German or Russian (It's been a while, can't remember) is a way of calling them a liar or something similar. Idk if it will be a just a reprint with formations tacked on. It wouldnt surprise me though.

The only thing Im certain of is that it wont be competitive. The Chaos line sells too well to encroach on the powerful codexes, it just doesnt need rules to push kits. So all the Chaosfags that are pining away for a new codex are just setting themselves up for disappointment. It will be Blood Angels tier (with spikes).

Hey guys I decided I wanted to run a little black templar attachment alongside my Lamenters (Blood Angels)

What stuff is really fun to take for Black Templars these days? I've already built an emperor's champion and a squad of initiates with ccw/pistols.

I figured their special rules work best with assault marines, chaplains, terminators, stuff like that. Lamenters will have the job of objective holding with normal tac squads, rhinos, some assault marines, death company, and vanguard vets, so I'm open to going full retard with the Black Templar.

Was considering another initiate squad, some scouts as meatshields for both, an assault termi squad, and maybe running a squad of jetpack assault guys with them too for shits and giggles. I'd love to run a bunch of marines on foot/jetpack between my Lamenters and Templar, so any tips on how to make that work best would be awesome.

The Emperor's Champion is kinda neat but not particularly worth the points. Grimaldus is absolutely amazing, particularly in your kind of list. I like to use vanguard and have been doing so since the points drop on melee weapons for them. They're pretty decent, you just need to be careful with them. Assault terminators are garbage, use an honor guard squad with mixed power weapons. With a banner, you're running at about five attacks per model. With hatred and a decent mix of weapons, you should be kicking the shit out of anything that can be charged. As far as crusade squads go, you're regrettably best-off with 20 bolter dudes. It's not exceptionally templary, but it's hard to argue with that many bolters at the price. I have never used normal assault squads. Anything they can do will be done better by something else.
>>
>>43582417
I suggest to go Shadowstrike for Vanguards. Not rolling for reserves and charging after deepstrike make them very good.

I know that it's possible to have members of two different armies in one army thanks to double CAD, but is it possible to have members of three different armies? I like the friendship aspect between the Black Templars, Sisters of Battle and Grey Knights and was thinking if an army can be made where Black Templars do their close range shit with SoB doing range support and GK doing psyker support.
>>
>>43582511
>double CAD
Pretty certain there's no limit on how many CADs you can take.
>>
>>43582511
You can take as many detachments as you like. That particular combination is going to suck, however. You need way too many troops and HQs for that to be viable. You're not going to ever get to take what makes each of those decent.

pretty sure the grey knights are snickering or irritated at the sisters being too pure for corruption since they spend years doing training from hell. the sisters are annoyed that there are psykers nearby and marines. the black templars are just praying.

as far as army composition goes idk. sisters would give the grey knights all the anti tank they lack, but then marines could do the same thing if not better.

>>43582697
Thinking on it more, you might be able to work it if you seriously skimp on required units. Scout squads are cheap, sisters are cheap-enough, and the GK codex detachment is practically anemic. The only problem you might run into is that those armies are notorious for being expensive to work well (except for sisters, which are pretty much Exorcists and the people who provide them cover saves). I guess that if you take the minimum necessary troops, then flood the board with librarians, dreadknights, exorcists, and honor guard, you might end up with something amusing.

I plan on creating a very fluffy renegade army that revolves around an acient possessed baneblade that gets worshipped by an entire planet.

Now i'm kinda new to 40k and have never played or seen a game with baneblades (or any variants).

How strong and how easy to destroy are they ingame? will they always get focussed down or survive to the end?
Also, is it considered cheesy or stupid to bring one, especially together with a horde army?
And which baneblade variant is the most survivable/tanky?

Renegades by RAW only get the generic Baneblade tank.

its aight, 9/2 10" blast is gud, the 12" zealot/fanatic bubble is fun(from Blasphemous Icon:). They don't compare to the Taunar or Wraithknights but 14/13/12 9hp usually lasts until someone rolls 6 on the D table or you get charged by something with haywire.

Renegades is all about dat cheddar, grab a Baneblade with tons of Mutant Rabble around it to give it a 5+ intervening model cover save and walk up the board, theyl run or get pinned (3d6, pick lowest, reroll if failed) and at 3 pts a model your opponent doesn't really want to waste time shooting meatsacks.

I play renegades with a Purge Detatchment that's basically just as much blast/barrage spam with 3x33 zombies to bubblewrap for deepstrike, pretty fun coming from playing Eldar for 2 years.

If your opponent isn't a fgt then the Stormlord/Shadowsword and whichever one gets the 10/1 10" blast with ignores cover are easily the best ones.

Finally breaking down and looking at getting into Warhammer 40k. I like the look of the CSM, but I have a few questions.

Is it worth it starting with the dark vengeance set/expansions? The local scene is dead so i'll need two armies anyways.

Is a force based around cultists/termies/marines viable? Do the miniatures weapons have to reflect their upgrades?

>>
>>43583089
The Dark Vengeance set is pretty much useless for chaos players due to terrible wargear options. Viability is entirely dependent upon local meta. Chaos is bad, to be honest, but not so bad as people here will lead you to believe. If you just play with friends, you can do pretty much whatever you want. That being said, I recommend Nurgle spawn. Drink your opponents' tears. The weapons should reflect the upgrades. You don't need to necessarily, but it's a bit of a dick move if it gets egregious.

CSM is literal garbage tier without jumping through hoops. DV is ridiculously cost effective, its easy to convert the DA side of things to CSM, but the models you get aren't that powerful.

Cultists, termies, and marines aren't really the star units of CSM, though "viable" completely depends on what you'r playing against. the two armies in DV are relatively well matched, though it comes down mostly to whos walker dies/immobilized first.

The biggest issue is that the DV box comes with very limited wargear options.
>>
>>43583089

My friend and I split the Dark Vengeance box.

He went the DKD route and is hardly using any of the models from DV, I am only using the bikes.

Generally with that Formation / Devotion combo you should use Wyverns compulsory elites, Field Artillery as troops and then fill all your heavy support with BS3 Rapier lasers.

If you then go nurgle devotion on your demagogue you've got plenty points spare for zombie tarpits and bubblewrap (by far the best in the game, 3 points for a 4+ FnP, fearless wound).

Some of the heavier artillery can be good too, but it rarely beats out rapiers as for the cost of 1 Medusa Siege gun you can get multiple rapiers that can take off multiple hullpoints instead, whereas a medua will only ever deal a single hullpoint (not including explodes).

Also you'll want to make some paper cut out blastmarkers.

Molecular bonding studs, used to fuse extra plating to power armor or repair damaged armor. They're power armor staples. Most famously used on MkV Heresy Armor which was mostly cobbled together parts held together with studs.

The lower robed legs are a separate bit from the upper torso. Get a hold of a ravenwing command squad bike with the robed legs.

The torso are two parts: the front and the back (which has all of the cape molded on it pretty much). If you were to take a regular marine torso back and mesh it with the interrogator chaplain's front, you'd have a bike compatible upper torso.

After that, it's a matter of finding a compatible cape bit (such as a resin one from a 3rd party site like anvil industries) or making your own-- sculpting it/manipulating it to be blowing in the wind behind the chaplain.

Pinning helps, but Orks have none for some reason.

I don't get why they don't have some kind of Super-shoota Mek Gun with pinning on it, that would be ace.

The only thing I can think of is allying in some CSM as they are allies of convenience and taking Rapier weapon batteries with hades autocannons.

This will murder a mech guard list as well as you can get 24 S8 shots in each HS slot so they work good for anti-armour.

Also, being Artillery you can pretty much model them as you like and maybe take human slaves as counts-as cultists.

If you want to keep it in Orks though I'd suggest just taking heavy anti-infantry, like grotzookas and just killing all his flamers on the ground.

This dude >>43583003 is right on some stuff but wrong on others.

You will barely ever be able to claim a 5+ cover from a human sized model with a baneblade, unless what is shooting at it is literally right next to the human model.

And if you were going for this kind of tactic tank the unending host formation alongside (don't know why no one else has suggested this) would be awesome.

You'll have 12 squads of 15 renegades who will always respawn on a 2+ if they die and give a 3+ intervening cover save instead of 5+.

This might be pushing it a bit on the cheese levels, but you could always take a normal renegade CAD and build it up to an unending host so you have something that could give Eldar and Tau a run for their money.

Its actually pieces of mk 5 armour.

Its supposed to bond additional layers of armour together better. Its specifically designed to hinder penetrator weapons ( ie Bolters). Hence why it was only made during the heresy, and after. The studs also act as a crude form of ablative plating (think of that plating they have on modern day tanks to hinder rockets)

No it's still MkIV. You can tell by the lack of external cables over the thighs and the angular kneecaps. Although you are kinda right, since MkV armor was actually a mishmash of old power armor parts held together with studs. But the studs are just fancy rivets holding additional layers of armor, I don't think they serve as protection themselves.

Just read the comments on that iii article. How true is the following:

The completely unsupportable "only 20% are gamers" fiction is a flat out lie aimed at protecting the copyrights of their models. In the UK its not possible to copyright gaming pieces/markers. This was discovered as a byproduct of GW's three year copyright lawsuit (millions spent/wasted) against Chapter House Studios in the US and DURING the suit GW started up its "We are a modelling company." mantra so that they can claim that the models are small sculptures, not gaming pieces.

Because the reality is that GW's models ARE gaming pieces, a well designed, well financed UK copyright lawsuit aimed at GW would find that none of their figures are copyrightable and the "walls" around their unsupportable copyrights would come crashing down, leaving the company in shambles, with anyone in the UK able to make copies of their models and sell them legally.

1 sword brother with a power fist
1 Land Raider Crusader per squad with extra armor

>7 Terminator Assault Squad with Sergeant - 580 points
Everyone has Thunder Hammer + Storm Shield
Land Raider Crusader with Extra Armor and Multi-Melta

>Ironclad Dreadnought - 210 points
CCW
Chain Fist
Heavy Flamer
Melta Gun
2x Hunter Killer Missles
Ironclad Assault Launcher
Drop Pod

Something beautiful about having 3 Land Raiders charging the enemy with a Dreadnought just dropping out of fucking nowhere.

I want to add some Deathwatch to my Inquisition forces through an allied detachment or something. It seems like the best way to represent kill teams would be through squads of sternguard, but I've only seen them used as suicide antitank units. Anyone have any experience using them in other roles?

I will never criticize the Templar Points army. I've always wanted to run it, but I don't have enough land raiders. However, you should consider taking Grimaldus instead of Helbrecht. The FnP and zealot everywhere are amazing. I'd also swap out the termies for honor guard. I've suggested that elsewhere in the thread as well. They're overall much better.

>>43585591
I stick them in a rhino and go hunting
No it doesn't work well, but it's different.

Wasn't the point of lamenters was that they cured the black rage and red thirst of their gene seed?

don't forget their bad luck as well, currently i think the chapter has been all but killed since they ran into a hive fleet

What about both Grimmy and Helbrecht? Helbrecht does give good boost to a Crusader Squad, but I'll have Grimmy be with the other that won't have the 4 neophytes cuz Grimmy has his 4 servitors (fitting 16 members each per Land Raider Crusader.)

Honor Guard are supposedly the best assault options Space Marines have now that I am doing further research on them. Thanks for this one I am more familiar with Chaos so I didn't know! Due to their unit size I have them in a Rhino though. Which I don't mind cuz I used the extra free points for a drop pod vanilla dreadnought.

Having two Land Raider Crusaders and a Rhino go at the enemy while two Dreadnoughts drop pod outta nowhere sounds like fun.

I'm appalled you actually got spoonfed.

I've never used Helbrecht and generally dislike him. Most of this is residual hatred from him being disappointing. He's not that bad, they just could've done much better with his wargear. I would personally feel uncomfortable with putting anything as good as honor guard into a rhino. Losing their charge is painful.

Trying to actively get into the hobby beyond occasionally surfing videos and playing the games, just bought my first rulebook off ebay.
I've been watching
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_2nM1GEllg
for a while, and wondering if there's anything like it anywhere else. pretty heavily concentrated lore put into an entertaining format. It's pretty imperial heavy though, so I was hoping there's other shit like it.

Reading the ciaphas cain novels right now, but novels seem to be a pretty bad way to go If I want a bunch of knowledge about a bunch of topics. Like, tau and chaos after the horus heresy. I know like none of the history there.
Are my choices for want of lore reading the wiki or codexes for armies, or is there other shit?

The novels archive link is and since I've visited 40k generals for a while, seemingly has been like for a while broken, so not entirely sure if that could have had what I wanted.

>and playing the games
Fucked up, meant playing the online games.
I still haven't done a single tabletop beyond a match of a dudes conquest deck, and still trying to find a group to play online chaos in the old world.
>>
>>43586060
Should I just do no Rhino but with chapter banner then?
>>
On a scale going from Safe to Squatted, how fucked are the Blood Angels?
>>
>>43586062
I'm about 7 years into the hobby and i've read numerous books but still dont know shit about 90% of the lore for tau, necrons, eldar and only abot 50% about the factions i play.

theres a lot of fluff man, just focus of the stuff you like and some basics
>>
>>43586095
Take the banner, +1 attacks is so obviously worth the points. If possible, I would like to see them in a land raider, even if that means slogging one of your marine squads. Never underestimate the power of a bunch of angry dudes with swords in a land raider. Also, make sure to let some one of the servitors eat the overwatch. Losing one isn't that bad and they're fairly easy to kill. Triggering your chapter tactic is totally worth it.
>>
>>43584667
No, you idiot. The Blood Angels, at the time Kauyon is happening are fighting Hive Fleet Leviathan in the Shield of Baal.

They are preparing for a double invasion by Ka'pandaman and Hive Fleet Leviathan on their home system.
>>
>>43586110
I mean, the only shit that doesn't get my fluff boner running are the orcs which are basically summed up (past the whole old ones shit) as
>WAAAAAAGH
and DE/eldar which are also easily summed up as
>lets murderfuckslave everything and generally act fucking insane
or
>"Let's constantly act superior and pretend we aren't completed fucked up the ass constantly by slaneesh and other shit"
and maybe some minor imperial factions/chapters.

Hell, the necrons don't even have shit beyond
>"the galaxy used to be ours, it will be again" and depressingcancerworld into undying deathbots
and I still like their shtick.

it's just mildly overwhelming.

https://1d4chan.org/ is a pretty good way to go. It has pretty much all the lore in 40k condensed in a rather entertaining (if meme filled) format. There's even tactics pages for each of the armies that provide a good supplement when getting into the tabletop, though some of the advice is a bit suspect.

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page is also a good way to learn the lore, though it's pretty dense.

I've used them in drop pods and rhinos, and in anti-infantry, anti-tank, and that one fucker over there needs to die roles. They can do well in taking out squads of squishy bodies, especially with 2 heavy flamers. While not an efficient use of their points I've had some success as warlord hunters, but that depends on a lot of variables. How well they do in any role is also largely dependant on how and what your opponent plays. I've had four combat squads of them almost wipe a guys backfield, but in another they fell like wheat to a scythe. Anti-armour is where I find they get the most use in my meta right now though, but I've seen a guy run unbound with Pedro and Sternguard in drops pods painted up as Deathwatch.

Oh, I don't know how I forgot about 1d4. it's pretty good.
the lexicanum I've read a bit once or twice, but I usually just somehow ended up there somehow, not on purpose. Any particularly well done pages from either you can recommend?

Thanks, man.
