What's a more effective combination in 3/3.5, fighter/paladin or fighter/ranger?

But yeah I came to post the same thing.
Paladin/Ranger is the most viable combination of those things, since i'm pretty sure there are ways to make those levels stack for spellcasting and other abilities. Putting Fighter in your build is either because you have something specific in mind that requires the bonus feats, or because you wanted to give yourself a handicap.

Yeah, this. Typically for 3.5 people only take levels in fighter to get the feats to qualify for a prestige class sooner or they just don't know any better. Devoted Tracker is the feat you're talking about, but I don't think it would really make up for all the downsides of a paladin/ranger

Depends what's in play senpai.
With Spell Compendium both Paladin and Ranger are considerably improved, but Ranger more so I think.
If all sources are in play some of Fighter's alternate class abilities are actually quite useful and can use Charisma, otherwise the Fighter/Paladin MAD is going to punish you and Ranger works better.
Sword of the Arcane Order is a great feat for any Paladin or Ranger if it's on the table.

Inquisitor is another option. Though less armored (unless you like, dip one level in something that gives armor), Bane is essentially like a mini-smite.
Oracles could also work, and are the other CHA based divine casters.

Oddly enough, combat clerics aren't as potent in raw damage as they were in 3.5.
If he followed the optimizing books entirely, he'd be able to do it handily, as the real power behind combat clerics was DMM buffs stacking with wand/scroll buffs before battle.

Also, keep in mind that ragelancepounce was ruled illegal. Barbarians are still top-notch damage dealers, but clerics with the right buffs and a little optimizing (assuming he grabbed abyssal I think for even more inherent STR, or possibly Orc with community minded for the self buff?) can easily match them.... not to mention they can just have the rage domain.
