What if each player wasn't just a grunt but a commander? Instead of just being one grunt in a fighter you're in command of an entire warship or a squadron of fighters. Granted, it's a bit World of Warship-y but might be fun.

To answer your question, if you do a sort of Star Trek/Galactica style game, where all the characters have different roles aboard the ship. That way you can have the chief engineer, the wing commander, the marine commander, etc.
