Consider making it a gestalt game or giving them infinite cantrips like pathfinder

The gestalt would allow a variety of playstyles while keeping the core concept strong. Cantrips would allow the players to continue having the ability to cast after everyone blows all their spells on the first encounter.

I could definitely see players multi classing into a second caster class. Dusk/hexblade, Warmage, beguiler, sorcerer, cleric.
