white: angel's grace
blue: sunder
black: hatred
red: final fortune
green: berserk

She the Bant Angle who can get +1/+1 counters?

If so, all the normal bant ramp, some exalted shit, good enchantments too.

Any frenchfags around? Will Meren have what it takes to be a competitive commander if she's back up by elfball?
>>

>Not Gamble

Man get it together.
>>
>>43521087
Nah, Ezuri will be the elfball legend of this set.
>>
>>43521087
Not a chance. The commander abilities on Old Ezuri are too relevant and the abilities on Meren aren't quick enough to be relevant in Elf Ball.

Yeah, its a deck and all but its no where near the best elfball list in the format, its not even the best mono green elfball legend.

>Chord of calling
>vampiric tutor
>wild ricochet
>>
>>43521137
Really? Wow. Actually looking at MTG top 8 it seems Yissan is top spot.

Tho I don't really see why.

I feel like Yissan is too easy to just outright stop by the virtue of kill spells.
>>
What do you guys think of my Oona deck?
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/05-11-15-oona-queen-of-the-mill/
>>
>>43521188
Same with Ezuri, he dies super easy to removal too.

Yisan lets you start chains of wirewood symbiote --> Priest of titania ----> elvish archdruid.

Yisan is a super good commander, very underrared in both formats.
>>
>>43521243
I get what you're saying, I've built Yisan myself, but I feel as someone who's played him, that he's easily countered, and his ability is less relevant then Ezuri's off a death.

But then again, my french decks run ass loads of kill spells and burn spells like Pyroclasm which just ruins elves anyway.
>>
>>43521243
You have Everflowing and Rings, where's the Monolith?
>>
>>43521302
The fuck?
>>
>>43521316
Don't know how I clicked on you, meant to click on the Oona list.
>>
>>43521292
>the "removal makes a general bad" post

Can't go a thread without this stuff.

Ezuri and Yisa both suffer from different problems, Ezuri is good at killing people while Yisan is much better at finding pieces and rebuilding from sweepers.

Neither can protect themselves and Ezuri's regen ability only works against the damage based sweepers in french, it does nothing against the more powerful sweepers.
>>
>>43521349
I never said removal makes him bad.

Just that in my opinion it makes him worse then Ezuri.

It's clear by MTG top 8 that my opinion is a minority. But that's fine, after my Yissan deck I don't plan on building another Elfball deck.

I think we have like 3 caucasian planeswalkers at this point and 3 of them are/were bad guys or "dead".
>>
>>43523623
Yeah and only two are dragons.

Fuck the dragons amiright.

We have Espeth, Jace, Garuk, Sorin, Giddion, Chandra, and Tezzeret as far as I'm aware.

That's plenty.

The last set of magic was about a white guy going to a world he doesn't belong in and fighting all their battles for them.
>>
>>43523685
This a retarded fucking topic but, Gideon isn't white, not anymore. Who knows about Sorin, but probably since Innistrad is mostly white and one asian dork.
>>
>>43523685

>The last set of magic was about a guy going to a world he doesn't belong in and fighting all their battles for them

That is literally the point of Planeswalker, they are all people who "doesn't belong" given the power to find a place where they do, the entirety of Origin was about showing you where they were born and where they found a place to call home.
You just added "white guy" in there as if it somehow makes it a bad thing.
>>
>>43523685
>Gideon
>Chandra
>Tezzeret
>white

Gideon is a hairy Greek, Chandra is a poo in loo and Tezzeret is a black man (the dreads and the flat nose didn't tip you off?)

Sorin's a fucking vampire, how does that count as caucasian you spastic?

We've got:

>Jace
>Liliana (lol bad guy)
>Garruk (got outsmarted by a woman multiple times, became evil and is now MIA)
>Elspeth (dead)

But hey, we do have Dack Fayden (a thief) and Ral Zareck (a murderer) and they're both white too!

>Too busy looking for his living waifu pillow and fighting a man who looks like Skrillex

>>
>>43523759

>>
>>43524064
Are you retarded?

Ugin, Naheri, and Sorin were all supposed to go back to Zendikar and Sorin was the only one who made it there.

Hens him being in the last Zendikar set.

It was Ugins Idea to use Zendikar because it was filled with wild mana, he just told Sorin to use his powers to lure them.

He went to Tarkir to find Ugin because he needs Ugin to fix Zendikar.

Sorin's grandfather made the elixir that turned everyone into vampires you dingus. The Tezzeret thing is dicy though; he was drawn originally as an old man, but wotc asked Francisco to make him younger so he ended up looking mixed race, which I'm not sure if that was his intention, his art agent of bolas art made him look really Caucasian and his art in the web comics makes him white so he might white afterall. (Personally I thought it was cool when he was a half black youth from the ghetto, being from the crest made him relatable).

Just a few suggestions:
>Omniscience
>Urborg/Zombie Trailblazer to combo with Zombie Master
>Nykthos
>Massacre Wurm
>Reaper from the Abyss
>Harvester of Souls
>Overseer of the Damned
>I've found the BB to sometimes be restrictive with Victim of Night and usually run Go for the Throat instead in multicolored
>Couple boardwipes are almost necessary
>Same for counterspells
>Necropotence is always worth it
>same with Phyrexian Arena
>Grave Pact is amazing
>Couple single target reanimate effects go a long way
>Phyrexian Altar is worth the money and is practically an auto include
>Ashnod's Altar is also amazing
>Cruel Revival is meh, played it for a while and it was too much mana to leave up for a kill spell
>Vile Rebirth is likely to never have enough of an impact unless targeted graveyard exile is important for you
>Door of Destinies is kind of meh as well, though I ran less zombie spells than you
>Grave Betrayal is usually either destroyed or people durdle until it is because they don't want you to get their shit, only worth it if you can immediately wrath after
>Quest for the Gravelord is also pretty underwhelming
>I found that I never really used Geth's ability, but maybe you will
>As above for Havengul Lich
>Ghoulraiser is ok
>Havengul Runebinder is anti-synergy with Mikaeus, but you could run Retribution of the Ancients to fix that
>Lich Lord of Unx is fun but the other lords are better
>Liliana's Reaver is also fun but rarely connects for his effect
>As above for Raving Dead
>Lim Dul is fun but, again, his reanimate ability is an uncommon thing to have work in my experience
>Reassembling Skeleton can allow for some shenanigans but (him, Mikaeus, and Phyrexian Altar allow for infinite death triggers) but isn't a zombie and won't benefit from any lord other than Death Baron
>Returned Phalanx is mana effective but underwhelming otherwise
>Undead Alchemist is fun but not competitive

Awesome tips, thank you. I wasn't even aware Splinterfright existed, he's hot shit.
>>
>>43526964
Yes. It's bad to spend 4 mana to ramp by one in all the colors, especially when you can't use that mana the same turn. you're better off just using artifact mana.

There isn't a deck where I would play sad robot. Except Feldon, because then he isn't basically a million mana, and i get both of his effects.
>>
>>43526289
I already built the deck and tested it out on cockatrice. It's a goodstuff type deck with lots of mana dorks, black etb creatures and green and black staples. I've won a couple of games even though it's just a rough draft without any fine tuning. I doubt it'll be a deck to beat, but I won't be surprised if I see her in a top 8.

>>43527074
There are a lot more decks than Feldon that can recur Sadbot easily, and plenty that are arguably much better at it. Also, it doesn't just ramp for one, it provides a chump block and replaces itself when it dies. Sadbot is good in EDH, I'll agree that it's bad in a deck that just plans to cast him once and be done with it but the moment you have some recursion engines or sacrifice synergies going on, he becomes entirely worth the slot in the 99.

Providing a chump block doesn't really make it worth anything more to me, but if you actually have a powerful recursion engine, then i guess he is just mediocre. I'd rather recur something that forwards my game plan.

Hey guys, so I recently acquired a Vela the Nightclad and I'm intending to build this deck right here:

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/vela-slips-through/

Considering all the recent new additions, is there anything new that should be added to it/shit that should be taken out? The confluences are nice but i think only the blue one is worthwile for this deck.
>>
>>43527074
Sad robot is not just a ramp spell, he's a value creature. If his body is relevant at all he's somewhere between 2-for-1 and 3-for-1, which is awesome for colors that have a hard time with card advantage. I would always run him in W, R or WR decks and often in other nongreen decks too.

Sad robot vs. generic mana rocks isn't really a relevant comparison in any way.

Recurring sadbot gives you resource advantage on two fronts. Cards in hand, lands in play. If you've got something that benefits from saccing creatures even better. And providing chump blocks is relevant, you're at least forcing your opponents' ground threats to have trample. I think you're vastly underestimating the card.

I can't believe there's anybody out there who would call Sad Robot bad.

Cyclonic Rift is consistently the worst card in my Momir Vig deck. It's miserable to draw, and doesn't give me much advantage when i do use it unless i'm playing against people who don't know any better then to overextend.

Why is it the best instant in commander? Because people who can't play get BTFO by sweepers?
>>

Have you tried using it to clear the way and win that turn? Have you tried recurring it to Cyclonic Rift pretty much every turn? Are you baiting?

>>43527876
In his defense, Sadbot isn't an autoinclude unless you have ways to abuse it. It will be good at face value in a lot of decks, it will obviously always play nice with things like Welder, Pod, Feldon/Daretti, but in something like a Zurgo or Aurelia aggro list? You have better things to do than cast Sadbot.

That said, in the decks that can use it properly, it's an all around good card. Not stellar, not oh-my-god-best-creature-in-the-format, just consistently good, with a satisfying floor and a very high ceiling.

>>43528039
I really don't like it in aggro list unless you have good sources of recursion, but good point about the swords. I've just been less than amazed by it. I want my 4-drops to help me go wide (eg. Hero of Bladehold), have haste and/or be evasive. Then again, my experience stems from trying Sadbot in Aurelia, which isn't the same deck as Zurgo.
>>
>>43528072
He asks why its the best instance in his post
>>
>>43528049
Not the guy you're responding to, but I play Aurelia as well. And you're sort of right, but also sort of wrong. It's true that it can be very hard to win through Commander damage with Aurelia, it's not a strategy I particularly favor. But what she does help you do is sit in the command zone while you play a WR aggro/midrange game, and gives you the tools to turn a decent board into a one-turn kill if shields ever go down. People thinking they're safe from a kill and tapping down too low, letting you cast Aurelia then Final Fortune followed by Insurrection during your extra turn, is pretty brutal.

On her own though, she does get brickwalled too easily, she's better used as a finisher than as a main means of attack in my experience. It's not a great deck, but it's a playable one, and you can kill tables surprisingly fast if they don't respect the threat Aurelia represents.
>>
>>43528072
well my usual group is literally three UGx lists, rafiq, rubinia, and mimeoplasm. I've learned to stop wasting my turns tapping out to cast zurgo ASAP because they will undoubtedly answer him next turn if he even resolves. I usually play it easy and wait for the opportunity to cast zurgo with pyroblast protection and slap some swords and psychotic fury on him to swing for a kill. or just make land drops and tutor up obliterate + boros charm to try and steal the win late game.
>>
>>43528151
I hear you, in a UGx-heavy meta, aggro decks often have to lean more towards the midrange end of things. Can't go all-in and strap equipment to your commander and hope that will work.
>>

>>
>>43528320

>>
>>43528320
There are edict effects and -1/-1 sweepers.

Those are limited to black decks though.
>>
>>43528361
The main liability of aggro decks is they can't play 1v3. Whereas combo decks, stax decks and UGx decks can, to an extent.

Aggro decks can play just fine in a 1v1v1v1 scenario however, where everyone's taking shots at other players. It's just that there will be some game configurations that will be almost unwinnable for aggro if everyone's playing uninteractive midrange/combo decks.

I responded to a post boasting "21EZcommander damage". Moreover, Aurelia is by no means close to the best voltron general, and never a stax general, which are typically the situations you would encounter winning a table with commander damage.

>she's better used as a finisher than as a main means of attack in my experience

RW is also objectively worse at aggro compared to G/x/y.

>It's not a great deck, but it's a playable one
Sure, but playable is not the same as "21EZcommander damage."

As the power level of a meta rises, so does its tendency towards combo and stax, which means there is less place for traditional aggro.

In my meta the only decks I would ascribe "aggro" to are a trio of derpy Kaalia decks, Jenara voltron, Rafiq infect/voltron, Mayael toolkit, all of which struggle. I mean, sure, everyone has "win with beating" as a backup wincon, especially the BG/x and UG/x archetypes. If you sit down at one of our tables, you're likely to be sitting across from something that looks like Teferi stax / Mimeo combo / Zur Doomsday, or Damia / Edric / Prossh Food Chain. Bring an RW voltron or aggro deck and you're likely to have a very, very bad day.

Enough that you will regularly have a 6/6 or 8/8 attacking on turn 3 and 10/10+ attacking on turn 4.

Faith's Reward and Second Sunrise are in the deck to reset after a removal. Sure, the counters don't stick, but if you had any version of a Soul Warden on the field, you'll get enough of them back anyway, and even if you didn't growing them back is quick enough. Other than that, both Greaves and Boots should be in there. And at the very worst, you'll probably have built up 6 counters anyway and you're keeping two mana untapped which makes his removal a 2-for-1.

Except you'll get back your entire field when faced with mass removal, which is why you run them. Come turn 3-4, you can basically just keep slapping Karlov sideways, still see him grow much of the time, and you'll win sooner rather than later. Keeping mana up to dodge mass removal is probably the best thing you could be doing at this time.

>Orzhov Charm

Not only, there are a bit of removal that gives you life, which buffs Karlov.

Karlov will probably outrace all of them, and become big enough that he won't die in any trades bar deathtouch.

Greaves/Boots is more intended for protecting him the second time you cast him.

While obviously fucking good, Marath is still "just" a 3/3 for 3. Karlov will almost always be AT LEAST a 4/4 for 2 when it comes time to attack, most often even bigger.

>Skullbriar
None of the Skullbriar lists I find work anywhere near like what any of you suggest. They run exactly zero "buff" spells like someone suggested, exactly zero things that put counters on him except for himself. For reference:

I'm sure he's good, but growing by +1/+1 each time you hit face is a lot slower than growing by +2/+2 each time you gain life, which can, and will, trigger multiple times each turn.

Except you cant grow karlov in that time because you need to hold up 3-4 fucking mana for your anti-wrath card
>It doesn't have a single relevant mode, what the fuck are you talking about?
It reanimates your soul sisters.
The thing that makes your deck function.
It kills your opponents shit so your karlov can hit them for more than 2.
Are you daft?
>Karlov will probably outrace all of them, and become big enough that he won't die in any trades bar deathtouch.
Christmas land, they'll kill karlov because you arent doing anything because you need to hold up mana for your faith's reward. Also both of those decks have more than enough ways to just kill your commander into uselessness
>Karlov will probably outrace all of them, and become big enough that he won't die in any trades bar deathtouch.
Oh, that makes sense, cause he'll just die a lot.
>Karlov will almost always be AT LEAST a 4/4 for 2 when it comes time to attack, most often even bigger.
Cause there's so many ways to protect him that also incidentally gain you life right?....R-right???

I believe you should focus more on creatures that do things when they ETB/die/leave the field and methods to blink them than when they deal damage to a player, imo. Deadeye Navigator, Aetherling, Ninjutsu stuff are all good examples for what you want to be doing. Get a Solemn Simulacrum there and a Palinchron (Palinchron combos with Navigator really easily for infinite mana). I don't have much experience building decks, but that's how I'd start around. Alternatively, get a load of sac effects, but with blue it's maybe easier to just blink shit.

>Except you cant grow karlov in that time because you need to hold up 3-4 fucking mana for your anti-wrath card
Soul sister cards + Brimaz still works, lifelinkers like Vault Skirge still works, cards like Soulmender still works... should I go on?

>It reanimates your soul sisters.
So does the anti-wrath cards. If they SPECIFICALLY only kill the soul sisters, then they're welcome to waste their time, because I already have things going by then. It's also relatively inefficient as removal. There are plenty of things I'd rather run over it.

>Christmas land
It really isn't.

>Cause there's so many ways to protect him that also incidentally gain you life right?....R-right???

This is a problem that loads of deck already face. It's not like decks will always have an efficient removal in hand in the first three turns.

I would if I thought there was any point and you guys would be anything but fucking bitches about it. It's really unrefined so far anyway and has lots of subpar choices, I might post a decklist later when it's more thought-through.
>>
>>43530155
There is a point because none of us, or at least I, haven't made a deck around him and are just theory crafting. Like maybe you're onto some super broken shit that we don't know of, and that's the reason you think he's viable.
>>
>>43530155
Don't be so negative, I haven't taken part in this argument but I'm a fan of Anafenza beatdowns in French, I could get behind Karlov if someone comes up with good ways to use him. I'm just not sure what that would even look like.

>Soul sister cards + Brimaz still works, lifelinkers like Vault Skirge still works, cards like Soulmender still works... should I go on?
Yeah cause soulmender is fucking garbage. As I said already, you either are protecting your commander or landing value on other stuff and just hoping your commander doesnt matter. Your deck requires synergy for single cards to work (like your commander) so your opponent will just kill it
>So does the anti-wrath cards. If they SPECIFICALLY only kill the soul sisters, then they're welcome to waste their time, because I already have things going by then. It's also relatively inefficient as removal. There are plenty of things I'd rather run over it.
As said, you'll need to hold up mana for anti-wrath cards so they are garbage. Or your not able to hold up mana for the anti-wrath cards to develope a board state so you can't cast them. then they are useless.
>>Christmas land
>It really isn't.
Explain how you managing to turn 1 soul sister, turn two commander and then turn three brimaz and then hold up mana for anti-wrath and meanwhile your opponent has done nothing is NOT christmasland.

>This is a problem that loads of deck already face. It's not like decks will always have an efficient removal in hand in the first three turns.
There's more efficient removal cards available in naya, or abzan or jund than there are life gain things for turns 1-3

>>43529781
>While obviously fucking good, Marath is still "just" a 3/3 for 3. Karlov will almost always be AT LEAST a 4/4 for 2 when it comes time to attack, most often even bigger.
Except you're forgetting the mana dorks and the ramp green offers.

>None of the Skullbriar lists I find work anywhere near like what any of you suggest. They run exactly zero "buff" spells like someone suggested, exactly zero things that put counters on him except for himself.

Fair enough. Skullbriar isn't a very competitive commander anyway. I guess there is no single viable deck that beats karlov's pump atm. But then there's the question of why would you do that when you can just go for regular beat down instead, which realistically is just as fast.

This thread has been nothing but vitriolic to the suggestion from the get-go, I'm pretty sure no one would feel very compelled to share their decklist in that context.

Either way I'm hitting the hay right now so posting it wouldn't be very constructive for me. I might post it in a day or two when I've worked a little more on it.

>>43530322
>Yeah cause soulmender is fucking garbage.
In 99% of decks, yes. But in Karlov it simulates a Soul Warden that sees a creature dropping every turn, which is far and away good enough. You can even buff Karlov at instant speed which has applications.
>As said, you'll need to hold up mana for anti-wrath cards so they are garbage.
I would obviously only do it against decks that I would reasonably except to run mass removal, which isn't all of them. Against other decks you can go more balls to the wall and finish even faster.

>Explain how you managing to turn 1 soul sister, turn two commander and then turn three brimaz and then hold up mana for anti-wrath and meanwhile your opponent has done nothing is NOT christmasland.

Looking at decklists, only relatively few decks, like Augustin and Tasigur, run that much removal. All decks do, sure, but most of them only a smattering., which you can reasonably except to avoid the first few turns most games.

You started the discussion with bold claims that he would be top tier if I remember correctly, while not backing it up in any way. Of the first four responses you received, one was a shitpost, sure, but the other three were acknowledging he may be powerful, though still doubting tier 1 potential. That's not vitriolic. You just got too defensive while refusing to provide a decklist but still holding on to your "tier 1" prediction with nothing to back it up.

Post a decklist tomorrow, I'd genuinely like to see it.

So you have a 1/1 that doesnt do anything without your commander and requires adding mana to in an aggro deck? Sounds bad
>I would obviously only do it against decks that I would reasonably except to run mass removal, which isn't all of them. Against other decks you can go more balls to the wall and finish even faster.
You can only go fast with lifelink giving your karlov buffs, which you haven't shown are playable
>Looking at decklists, only relatively few decks, like Augustin and Tasigur, run that much removal. All decks do, sure, but most of them only a smattering., which you can reasonably except to avoid the first few turns most games.
Yeah those other deck lists are dropping things like creatures, that can block or kill your commander.

Your deck idea relies on synergy for most cards to be useful. Synergy decks have fallen to the wayside because piles of just goodstuff are better on average. Karlov isn't teir 1 in french.

quick yes or no question.
Giving karlov lifelink and old "when ever deal dmg gain life" would trigger him twice yes?

Yes.

You'd gain life twice.
Lifelink isn't a triggered ability so it never triggers.

Oh yeah?

Gary is the real deal. I once drained each other player for 25 life in a single turn with a well-timed Living Death and Animate Dead on him.

Sangromancer kinda sucks but she's actually saved my ass a few times. With only 2 or 3 triggers (hitting each opponent) she can quickly gain me 15-20 life.

I think she might be competitive, but probably not t1. And Anafenza is another general who hoses her.
