The USA as defacto protector of Japan sends in recon teams and maybe some scientists to figure out what the fuck is on the other side. Depending on the administration / the Brass in charge of the operation this might get revealed to other NATO leaders. As to how effective this would be, well thats really up to the author on how effective modern mundane weapons are against demons and such, how suceptable modern volunteer professional soldiers are to Chaos, and if the invasion forces would actually bring all their means to bear on the threats ie armored tanks, attach and transport helicopters, jet fighters, drones, strategic bombers, paratroopers, mechanized infantry, conventional artillery, air to ground attack aircraft, ground to air missiles, and so on. If they did and the officers were competant and didn't underestimate the opposition, then it would probably be a walk in the park. But seeing how incompetent armed forces seem to become in the Warhammer universe, I would doubt it.

No, at that point of the fight they're engaging Japanese special forces, the fantasy characters don't even know there's a battle going on at that point.
It 'triggers' me for a few reasons I'll try to explain.
1: America is presented as a completely retarded antagonist. The reasons they do things make no sense whatsoever and it's pretty obvious that the real reason behind any action is 'to look evil' because the author hates America and can't be assed to come up with reasonable reasons for having them be an antagonist. Further, America is portrayed as being evil because they want to exploit the resources through the Gate. But Japan is portrayed as good because they want to exploit the resources through the Gate. I trust you see the logic here.
2: Japanese characters are about as self assured and morally perfect as season one Star Trek. It's a huge case of protagonist centered morality. The JSDF are presented as the plucky and likable heroes who don't let the war get them down as they slaughter hundreds of thousands of enemy troops. It makes them look a bit psychotic that they don't even blink as they watch entire fields of enemies reduced into hamburger meat with no chance to protect themselves or escape.
Also there's an entire episode about them defending their actions against a civilian inquiry that could not be run by bigger strawmen. Rather than explore the issues of such a lopsided war it presents anyone with concerns about the deployment as retarded and the JSDF as perfect.

3: As a war story, it's boring as all hell. The JSDF never, ever, loses a single fight. In fact I don't think they've lost a single individual soldier so far in the anime. This is a world with colossal dragons and powerful magic users and literal demigods, there could be all kinds of powerful creatures and mages on the enemy side. But instead they're just bog-standard medieval infantrymen and all the characters with fantastic supernatural powers end up siding with the JSDF. The enemy is not written to be a powerful antagonist to be taken seriously, but a pitiful enemy meant to be looked down on as they are slaughtered by the hundreds of thousands while being morally inferior.
Sorry for the rant.
